Pentax's professional system camera for more than 30 years -- the 6X7 and later 67 -- led the professional photography market with best-in-the-industry lenses, uncompromising image quality, and solid build quality. A consummate system camera with capabilities to photograph almost any assignment well, the 6X7's engineering still exceeds that of many modern professional film cameras.
The camera's DNA remained basically unchanged throughout the production run. The 67 was, inside, very similar to the 6X7. The 67ii changed the inner workings to an electromechanical design.
Here are some photo albums I've taken with this camera:

The Pentax 6x7 came out in 1969. The 67 came in the 19 70s. I have both with metering prisms and a 55mm F4 lens and a 75mm 4.5. Excellent cameras..Wished for lenses. 200m my f4 and 45mm . Both the later versions. These have got too expensive for me due to the advent of you tube videos like this one. However, keep the videos coming and I will keep on enjoying these wonderful cameras.

You're welcome, and thank you. I'm glad to give such a great camera a thorough review. As for pay, I don't do this for the money. My ad revenues are about 50-60 cents a day, sometimes a buck (those are really exciting days for me.) But the video ads before and after videos are the highest-grossing ads (I think.) So not skipping those helps the video makers out more than the typical ads.

My new Pentax 6X7 MLU with the 105mm f2.4 and wooden handle just arrived from Japan. After watching these excellent videos I will load up some B&W film, shoot 10 shots, develop them and scan them and I hope my new camera shoots as good as it looks, because it looks mint. I need to examine the mirror to see if it has been touched because I believe you said it would make focusing more difficult. Thanks for doing this informative series.

You're welcome. I love my 6X7. I have two lens systems I'm actively expanding -- 67 and K. The 67 lenses are just stunning. I hear that the 45mm wide-angle (equivalent to the 24mm in 35mm terms) is simply amazing. I like my 55mm 1:4.5 and the 135mm close-up. They're consistently great performers.

I forget if I did, but there's an MLU button on the side. After composing your image and getting your settings in place, then press the MLU button. The mirror will not unlock until the exposure's been taken once the MLU button is pushed. I've lost more than a few frames accidentally pushing the MLU button.

Hey David, how are you? (Sorry for my english) I `d like to thank you for this videos. I always dreamed to buy a Pentax 67 and only this year had the opportunity. I`ve whatched your videos in repeat from the day I`ve buyed the camera till the day it arrived in my house from shipping ( 2 weeks). When I load the first roll it seems like I already had the camera for years. Your videos helped me a lot and I am having great results in a personal work! Thanks very much you are the best!!!! Thank you for liking the video. As for the lens, I have that lens and the way my hood works is I can pull it out and it locks in place. The hood has a small white dot and the lens barrel has a small white dot, too. Rotate the white dots to align, and the hood can be retracted. If it's not pulling out, then it may just be dirty or bent. If the latter is the case, you can get a 67mm threaded lens hood on eBay for about $3 USD. Metal, threaded hoods are the best available for lens protection.

I actually owned a Pentax 6x7 system in the 1970s. The 6x7 is a beast weighing in at close to five pounds. The shutter speed was a slow 1/30 of a second unless you had the 90mm leaf shutter lens. I also worked for Rock Superstar Poster Magazine in the NYC / Long Island area. When I was sent into a recording studio the Pentax 6x7 went with me and made beautiful images on the 6x7 cm. format. Although I currently own a Canon 5d Mark II + Canon 1DS Mark II and Canon 1D Mark II N digital cameras, I still visit Ebay now and then and seriously think about buying a Pentax 6x7 system. A hell of a camera. Thanks for posting this informative video.

You're very welcome. It's a great camera. By coincidence, I had this out today for the local Pirate Festival. I humped it around on my neck with the 35mm fisheye, 135mm close-up, and kit 105. And yes, it got heavy. I use a two-inch strap with mine, though, so I can carry it a pretty good time before it really starts to strain my neck. I can't fathom why Pentax shipped it with a half-inch web neck strap.

Don't forget that a LOT of the weight is in the prism. If you get the waist level viewfinder, it probably reduces the weight by 40% (give or take). I would only use the WLV for this reason.

I just bought one of these in mint condition and I was so focused on looking at something on it, my toddler poked the film curtain while the film door was open and partially collapsed it. I literally began panicking and sweating, thinking my camera was ruined but I was able to carefully get it back to original position. phew! Thanks for the video. It was very informative. FYI the battery doesn't need to be lithium. I installed a 28A in mine simply because that's what I had laying aorund and it works just fine. People are saying lithium is better for cold temperatures but I more than likely won't be shooting in frigid temperatures anyway

Not yet. I almost got a Mamiya RB67, but decided I don't really NEED another camera system, and I'm saving for a lens. It wasn't easy to put the checkbook away, though. Recently I've been playing around with my Calumet 4X5 and learning about camera movements and, in general, enjoying the heck out of large format work. My next MF camera may be a Galvin 2X3 or similar, but that's a long time off. I'm saving for a Pentax FA Limited 77mm 1:1.8.

@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 10 лет назад
This is an amazing portrait camera. You could still use it for weddings for the bridal party shots and so forth. At the reception the noise won't be an issue. During the service, it may be good to have a second body. A lot of people say Hasselblads are great cameras. I talked to a wedding photographer who used a Kowa, and one of my friends has the same camera. They both raved about how great it is. Another small, quiet option might be a TLR. Their leaf shutters are almost silent. Rolleis are great but you just as much quality from some of the Japanese makes for less. I hope that helps!

Hey the mirror lock up is for shake reduction. You won't lose the pick if you press the button. If you are doing a still on tripod you can flip it up and then release the shutter. It reduces the shake and therefore more solid pics.

I'm a huge 6X7 fan and can't recommend it strongly enough. It will also be easy to stick with the 6X7 format as opposed to a Hassleblad which, I think, would be a 6X6. The rectangle gives you many more composition options.

Out of interest could you talk some more about the Pentax's film flatness performance / where you found those tests? Interesting that they found a mechanical solution to such a complex issue. It's a topic so interesting it deserves a video all of its own if you need anything else to add to your to do list! Contax used a ceramic film pressure place with an electromagnetically controlled vacuumn triggered in the instant before the shutter actuates. Zeiss' own research, in a paper published in 1979, concluded that the inherent curvature caused by 35mm film cartridges would cause a significant drop in contrast and sharpness. Dr. Kaemmerer at their Laboratory in Oberkochen found that most films deviated by up to 80μm, resulting in a loss of contrast of around 60% in centre-frame when shot with the C/Y 50mm/1.4 Planar wide open (observable at 20 cycles/mm). This effect was most prominent with a gap between shooting, resulting in 3-4 frames of sub-optimal performance if returning mid-roll after a break. Zeiss approached film producers with a proposed redesign of the 35mm cartridge but were rebuffed, so they addressed the issue themselves with the Real Time Vacuum system designed by Prof. Katsuiko Sugaya. This technology had only previously been used in aerospace photography where cost was not a limiting factor. It only ever appeared in two commercially produced cameras: the Contax RTS III and as an optional back for the Contax 645.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 4 года назад
I wish I could remember where I found that, or if I learned that talking with Eric Hendrickson about this camera. As for the Contax info, I had not heard that and that is incredible! I was going to suggest that a vacuum plate sounded like aerial photography technology. I do want to shoot and RTS III but it's not a camera I have in house right now.

This is so detailed! Its really helpful thank you David! Don’t know if you may see this question but I read about a “T” mode for the shutter in the manual, it’s said that when set between X and 1000 the shutter remains closed until it turns to the point where X or 1000 is at. Yet it’s not moving on it’s self after clicking the shutter...how does that work as a self timer if you still have to turn it back to X or 1000 with hand...? Maybe I’m misreading the manual, just wandering if there really is a way to use 6x7 as if it has a self timer in there. Thank you so much again!

Thank you so much. This is such a great series! I've been eyeballing this camera since it was first introduced to me by a friend about a year ago. Well, I finally pulled the trigger and bought one from ebay today. It comes paired with the 55mm 3.5 lens. I really cant wait to use this baby. Any tips on getting started? I shoot digital now and it's been ages since I've used film
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 8 лет назад
+Miguel Escalante First off, thank you. Also, great choice on your camera and lens. The 55mm f/4 is generally considered sharper than the 3/5, but the 3.5 looks fantastic and renders scenes with a very cinematic quality. For tips, check on the operation. Also, plan to get it overhauled in the next year if it hasn't been recently. That will probably run about $300 or so, but it absolutely worth it to make sure it runs properly and meters well. The light meters on these have started failing and becoming increasingly inaccurate, so that's a thing to be aware of. If you want film suggestions, I'd run a roll of Ultrafine or similar-cost film through it just to make sure it works properly and has no light leaks. If it's in good shape, there's a whole world of great films to choose from. There are some amazing 6X7 lenses, and some dogs. I'd avoid the 90mm f/2.8 leaf shutter. But some good ones are: - 105mm f/2.4. This is a spectacular lens and is the fastest standard lens that Pentax made (scaled up for focal length and format, it's faster than the 50mm f/1.2). This lens has generally good reviews. My copy is very good but some are only average. -135mm f/4 macro. It's actually a close-focus lens without tubes, but it's spectacularly sharp and takes great photos of whatever you want. - 200mm f/4. Great portrait lens, typically pretty cheap. This lens has mixed reviews. My copy is good, but not all are. - 75mm f/4. I haven't used this, but I'm told it was the sharpest lens (especially the later versions) that Pentax made for the 6X7. Everyone I know who has used one loves it. I also love the 35mm fisheye, but it's soft (typical of fisheyes) and requires that the image be framed for zero or nearly zero cropping to maintain image quality. One thing you can do, too, is get a 6X7 to whatever DSLR make you have adapter. There are Pentax OEM ones for Pentax DSLRs and third-party for Pentax, Canon, and Nikon (and probably Sony.) The 105/2.4, 200/4, and 135/4 are all suitable for FF and APS DSLRs. The first two -- 105 and 200 -- are as sharp as 35mm lenses and hold up well on the smaller format. That would be a good $30-50 investment as you could then use a DSLR as a backup body when you shoot your 6X7. Also, if you've never shot medium format, especially 6X7, you're in for a treat. The images on this format are simply spectacular owing to the physics behind the optics. For portraits, medium format is simply incredible and provides quality, especially subject isolation, that 35mm full frame can't touch.
@FashionPhotographer

This video predates my ability to digitize medium- and large-format film well. So to hold it flat for the macro photography, I used a piece of glass. The glass left odd optical marks on the final images.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 11 лет назад
That hasn't been my experience. But it depends on your lens and intentions for the image. Wider lenses can work at slower shutter speeds than telephotos. If you're going beyond 200mm on this camera, it's a good idea to have a tripod at any shutter speed. For most shooting, though, I believe it can be hand held by almost anyone at 1/125th or 1/60th with a standard or wide-angle lens.

David, great job on these Pentax videos. Can you recommend an extension tube for the 105 lens? I've never used them before but I want closer minimum focus distance for tight headshots. Cheers 👌🏼
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 3 года назад
Thank you! For tubes on the 105, I'd look at a macro focusing helical. I have one, an off-brand, but it works fine. The focus allows much finer macro control, effectively creating a double-throw macro lens on the 105 (the tube helical and the lend helical.)

Did you keep the paper and spool from one of the old rolls? Were it me, I'd load a spool with paper only and no film and operate the camera. Without a lens on, you could look through the front of the camera and make sure that the shutter is firing properly. You may not be exposing the images properly, too. You f stop ought to change depending on light and shutter speed. Do you have the TTL prism?
@DavidHancock

It is a great camera, but your Mamiya won't let you down, either. The 6X7 does have some drawbacks like weight, too, that some users have issues with.

Trying to make up my mind of a medium format film camera for landscapes. Everyone talks about how the camera works but not about the relative image quality compared to other options. Would help to give your opinion on IQ. Thanks.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 7 лет назад
For landscape medium format, 6X7 is probably the best choice. To that end, either the Pentax or the Mamiya RB67 are excellent options with very well regarded wide-angle lenses. I prefer the 6X7 format over 6X6 and 645 for landscapes and they print with less cropping on standard print sizes than both of the smaller formats. 6X8 is also good, and some latter RB67 models have a 6X8 options. So that could work but they tend to be more expensive than 6X7 bodies.

Thanks for the info. So the only way to release MLU once engaged is to open shutter and expose a frame? I thought I was going crazy trying to use the reset button to no avail. I've wasted several frames unfortunately by accidentally engaging MLU when picking up the camera (even with Lock engaged).
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 5 лет назад
Yup. That is my number one complaint about the camera. It's way to easy to trip the MLU and there's no way to undo it. Best option then is to kind point the camera at something, guess the focus, and take a photo.

great video! am around 90% getting this camera but the only thing holding me back are the online comments about how you would need a tripod to shoot with this camera especially with speeds lower than 1/125, would be great if you could give some information about this because im not really fond of tripods!!
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 8 лет назад
+BENGERZ BANGERZ I almost never use a tripod with my 6X7. And, in all reality, it's possible to hand-hold this camera at slower speeds than with a 35mm camera. There are two main reasons for this: 1- It's a HEAVY camera. Because of that, it takes more energy to move it. So the 6X7 is not as susceptible to camera shake from the mirror because of the camera and lens weight. Also, it's less susceptible to movement from your hands because you'd have to move your muscles more to move the camera. 2- It's wider than a 35mm camera. BEcause the camera is wider, it takes more movement to affect the image. Think of it this way, if you hold a pencil by each end and move your hands up and down two inches, that pencil is going to move a lot. If you grab a yard stick by the ends and move your hands up and down two inches, that yard stick is going to move a lot less. So your hands have to move a lot more with this camera to get the same amount of camera shake as with a 35mm. I've hand-held this camera to 1/4 of a second (with a 55mm lens, which is about the same as a 28mm lens in 35mm format), which is two stops faster than I can hand-hold with a 35mm camera, without camera shake. Here's the image that I took hand-holding the camera at 1/4 second: lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4brxPpO9ctk/UgC5jDNvgXI/AAAAAAAA1Is/KZua-UMtdns/s912-Ic42/18.jpg

Hello again, thank you for your answer. Unfortunatelly, I missed the point (because of my English, I guess). There is no problem to align dots and erect hood and fix it or align it again and retract it back. The problem is to fix the hood in retracted position - now it slips spontaneously when the front of lense is heading down. I was not able to find any bayonette for fixing the hood in retracted position. Sorry for spam, could you explain it to me again? Thank you very much.

hey David. I'm afraid I need some help. I recalled this video where you mentioned this sort of Achilles heel on the 67 and how it can crack the body of the camera. I unfortunately have hit it on the side. I originally thought it was just the filter ring, but then noticed that the 120 selector's plastic surrounding the switch had been damaged. You say that it renders the camera inoperable, but the camera still wings and shoots and meters; however it looks as if the frame count is not advancing. I'm freaking out. Any ideas? or maybe whomever you mentioned in your video? I would really appreciate your help. thank you.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 7 лет назад
Hmm. That's a tough one. If it winds then it is probably still working. Do you have film in it and do you know if the film is advancing (if the counter alone is broken, that's not the end of the world.) Your best bet on this is to check with Eric Hendrickson (www.pentaxs.com) to see if it needs a repair, or if it can be repaired. He know this camera better than anyone else on the planet and can help figure out if it's a debilitating issue or if it's repairable.
@pastelshoal
@pastelshoal 7 лет назад
+David Hancock yes, as far as I can tell it is still advancing film. My only worry about that is the ability of the camera to detect it is done with all 10 frames. I will check with him, thank you.

@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 9 лет назад
Jonilo Medina I'm glad to help, and you'll be very happy with your 6X7. The ISO is set on the metering prism only. If you have the metering prism, look for a dial called ASA -- ASA and ISO are the same thing. Only the metering prism has an ISO setting, so if you have a different prism, such as the standard prism or waist-level finder, then there will be no ISO setting. The ISO dial on the metering prism is, when holding the camera and looking down at it with the lens pointing away from you, on the left side on the top.

David Hancock Thank you very much sir! Been circling my city here in the Philippines yesterday,and found out that nobody develops 120 film here in our city. It's weird cause they develop my 135 film with the same process. Need to save more for home processing. Again, Thank you so much sir!
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 9 лет назад
Jonilo Medina You're very welcome. If you'd like, check out apug.org (analog photography users group). There may be users there who know of some shop that still develops 120. If you're trying chain stores and pharmacies, you're right, they won't. I'd be surprised if someone doesn't have a specialty photography store that develops 120. Manilla, Luzon, or Bauilo (if you're in any of them) may all be large enough, but someone on APUG will know for sure. That said, home developing is awesome and definitely worth doing. There's a lot more flexibility with your photography when you develop at home.

I want to use my Pentax 6 x 7 for sta t ionary portrait work, what would you suggest for remote flash options.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 6 лет назад
If you don't have a flash already, get one that can have its power level adjusted in the flash unit. Even the Amazon Basics flash can do that. So then you have two choices to trigger the flash. New units can often be triggered by another flash being fired. The Amazon Basics, for instance, can do this as well as Neewers, Pentaxes, Yonguos, etc. Or you can get a remote trigger. I used a $45 one-bade three-trigger setup from Neewer with 16 channels. That allows me to use up to three flashes from one trigger and a fourth on the camera or that's tripped by the camera's PC port and a PC port cable. A radio trigger is FAR more reliable than flash-triggered flashes which often don't work in anything except dark spaces with the flashes in close proximity.
