Pentax 6x7 Shooting with Open Door

In this short video I will show how to shoot a Pentax 6x7 (67 also) with no film and the back door open. This is done to check focusing if something is wrong or you might have a spider in your camera... Sorry it doesnt work with the 67ii.

There is a small slot in the body just below and to the right of the film advance lever. Pentax used to give on request for free a little key repairmen [or you] can insert there to set the shutter wind to operate with the back open. Pentax ran out of keys decades ago. They show up on ebay regularly for $10 to $25 each. This work-around is a much cheaper substitute.

Hello Nicos. Does the trick works if the camera does not have a battery in it?

It doesnt. It needs batteried to do anything.

Hey! Great video. Out of curiosity, would i be able to just close the door and keep on firing it dry? Or would the door have to be open? Thank you.

Mine works fine when I dot this, however loading actual film, aligning the arrow and closing the door, after I move the lever several times the shutter counter never moves, the film moves inside but not the counter, any ideas?

Can you just use two empty spools to trick it?

It seems to use the door and the backing paper to detect the film. So my guess is it won't work.

I just bought your same model where is the arrow to line the shutter speed with ?? does it line up with the battery light?

I just got the pentax 67 and notice that chain under prism is on the left side and cant move,but i can still shoot ????

Is the chain broken? The chain only moves when you change apertures. It wont affect shooting except for metering with the TTl prism.

@@NicosPhotographyShow Chain is broken yes, but it´s stock on the top on the left side, it looks like i can still shot and move apertur....

@@westdk6705 yeah, camera will work fine. Just no TTL metering with the prism. But I dont ever use it. Enjoy the camera!!

Hopefully this will let me check out my shutter issue. It seems to not open, or not remain open all the way across the frame, at high shutter speeds. I don't seem to have any problems at or below 1/60.

+Dustin Hern I hope you can find whats happening to your Pentax. Try using a new battery and also if you can use a video with high frame rate to "see" what happens at fast shutter speeds. If you can get your hands on a iphone 6s it can shoot at 200 frames per second. Good luck!

I think my GoPro shoots at a high frame rate. I just gotta find my GoPro... I do have an iPhone 6 which shoots slo mo. I still don't think it's slow enough to capture 1/125 shutter transport at a high enough frame rate to show what's going on. At any rate, I'm going to have to do some work on the camera. I'm told the shutter brake dries up and snags the shutter. If that's the case, it may require a replacement part. Maybe it just needs a good CLA...

+Dustin Hern You can try both the GoPro and phone. At the end you will have to freeze a pretty fast movement to check what could be happening. Is the problem vertical or horizontal? A CLA will probably help it. I sent two of mine to Eric from Pentax Repairs (cant remember the exact name) and he did a great job. Its not cheap and maybe you can find a second 6x7 body for cheap and it could be a replacement.

I either get no exposure at all, or if I'm shooting in portrait orientation, maybe the bottom half of the frame is unexposed.

So the issue is consistent with shutter travel, not mirror.

Hey Nicos! I just tried this with my Pentax 6x7 and all shutter speeds worked perfectly. Now when I close the back, I can still arm the camera and release the shutter without a film inside and without having to move the wheel on top. Is this a problem or should it go back to how it was after shooting a first roll? Quite scared that I broke something. Maybe someone can help :)

When you do this you make the camera think it has a roll inside. Once you open to load it will go back to normal.

I tried it and it still won’t let me cock the shutter... any tips ? I just bought it and I need to make sure that everything works with it. Cocking it has no effect even though the arrow is past the 0 count...

I had the same issue! I would suggest not doing this with the 67. I had to activate the mirror reset button. I can't imagine this is good for your camera...

+Jorge Zeraba Thanks! I bought the ebay adapter and never used it. Im going to try to find it and shoot a roll or two. I had the Xpan a while back and never got too used to the format.

I bought one of those too, and I haven't used it yet. After looking at how it must work, I realized that you have to make up another 35mm cassette to received the film after exposure, as there is no way to rewind the film. Unless you shoot a lot of panoramas, The hassle factor from setting up specially prepared double cassettes may exceed the waste value of just shooting the same scene on 120 and severely cropping the top and bottom of the frame.

Usually all cameras (older) had options for electronic flashes and older ones. X is the setting for electronic (modern) flashes.

I hve had a few Pentax cameras jam on me, never been able to fix them myself. But also just in case change the batteries.

@@NicosPhotographyShow That was it - new camera to me, and the seller shipped without a battery - added a battery, reset the mirror and everything worked as it should

You may have already solved this, but I had the same issue at first. It turns out it doesn't need to be depressed/ pushed down very far -- just a light bit of pressure will work.
