Pentecostal Cult Urging Members to Cut Family Members Off

Here we are witnessing one of the most devastating outcomes of a cult in action. Leaders are encouraging members to sever any or all of their close relationships and family ties to maintain a positive image of their leader.
.
This stance is completely at odds with Christian teachings, which underscores the importance of Christians actively living among those who hold different beliefs, following the example set by Jesus Himself who dined with sinners and engaged with people from all walks of life (Matthew 9:10-13).
.
The Bible encourages believers to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16), sharing the message of hope and love with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). This reflects the broader biblical principle of interacting with the world while upholding Christian values and virtues.
.
They selectively cherry-pick a few, select scriptures out of context to justify instructing followers to cut off their own parents, among others! They reinforce this demand by instilling an unnatural fear, which contradicts biblical principles, simply in order to enforce adherence to the pastor's directives and to suppress any questions into the "spiritual gifts" frequently exhibited in this church, employing psychological manipulation to serve their own agenda.
.
Observers may not realize that the "prophetess" here is inadvertently assuming the role of God, mimicking His voice and speaking of His wrath as if she were Him standing before them. She regularly asserts, as do others there, that the "man of God" can even READ THEIR MINDS! They are not even safe in their own thoughts!
.
This is a disturbing example of immoral individuals deliberately causing mental distress solely for the purpose of upholding their authority. It's shameful that these individuals claim to represent God while callously trampling over so many scriptures at the expense of others' wellbeing. This behavior goes beyond mere "cultish" tendencies and unmistakably falls within the true definition of a cult.

No Christ -- no biblical exposition -- only personal feelings and much anger. Scripture clearly teaches that false teachers "have a greater condemnation". This is no Christian church!

I am so glad I'm not in this denomination anymore. I never thought their standards were biblical, especially once I began to study out the scriptures they use to support them. And honestly it's their standards that have created such harshness and the cult-like tendencies. It's sad.

The Bible tells us that Paul says I suffer not a woman to preach and usurp authority over the man. If we BELIEVE the Bible, we believe this. Not saying that there does not come a time when you must choose between your family members or Jesus but make sure it is about Jesus.

Sounds to me like some people are upset, it just depends on what they’re going for and the intention behind it… Biblically speaking we are suppose to forsake everything and everyone to follow Christ just like the early church did, but it sounds to me like these people are coming off in an attacking type of tone. When it should be left up to the person to decide if it’s better that they cut off their family. Yes preach the Truth of the gospel of Christ, but also have the Spirit of Christ behind the words. In Spirit and in Truth.

This is a clear example of why we need to know our bible and study. This woman should not be speaking like this in the church. She is taking scripture out of context and she is also claiming that what she is saying, is of God and not of her flesh, but she is speaking falsely.

Maybe I am hearing wrong but it sounds more like she is saying cut ties to relationships that are toxic which you sometimes must do even if it is family but ONLY IF God tells you to do so. If her spirit is vexed when she talks to her mother then yes she needs to talk to her less but not fully cut her off. If we cut ties, WHEN it is God's will, then He will replace those relationships with other people. However, I may have missed something in my interpretation like I said at the beginning. Now saying the replacement will only come through their church...yes that is incorrect for sure.
@escaping350utopia
@escaping350utopia 2 месяца назад
The key point you highlighted is "toxic." However, berating members and suggesting that God's anger and wrath are imminent for merely questioning leadership ventures into dangerous territory. . Additionally, advocating for immediate no-contact with family members after such a rant is misguided. This sort of rhetoric inadvertently makes these individuals the source of toxicity in relationships, fostering division and hostility while unfairly placing blame on the disagreeing family member. . And yes, in cases of extremely toxic relationships, I agree that setting boundaries is healthy. However, in many instances where churches preach this vehemently, the conditions do not typically justify such drastic measures; often, these churches themselves violate numerous scriptures that encourage believers to be "Salt and Light" among their own families.

I don't believe you need to cut ties with family...however, you may need to set more prominent boundaries. Ex: Call or visit, but when they begin to do or say things demeaning to you or your family, they don't get to continue. Warn them to stop or you will end call or visit. Eventually they will understand that is not acceptable and if they want a relationship with you, that speech is not allowed. They may get mad at you, but evenutally, they'll understand.

I agree that there are occasions when it's necessary to establish boundaries with family members. However, there's a distinction between setting a boundary and completely cutting off contact due to a disagreement. The scripture being discussed in this thread pertains to situations where relationships become unhealthy or toxic. The concerning aspect of this rhetoric is that it appears to be encouraging individuals to become the source of toxicity within their families by cutting them off to uphold the authority of a single individual.

WATCH out for the screamers. BUT regardless of who says what, we must stay close to God, and hopefully stay close to our family members. but if your family members try to talk you away from God, then I wd limit my time with them, and try to talk them INTO spending time with GOD instead! but folks step away from their family members usually bc they are abusive, which can have nothing to do with church or God etc.

What Jesus says about family Jesus’s own words, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”3 In keeping with Old Testament prediction, Jesus came not to bring peace but a sword, “to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household” (Matt. 10:34-36). In his personal experience, Jesus knew spiritual rejection even within his natural family (Mark 3:21; 6:1-6; John 7:1-9) and asserted that his primary loyalty and that of his followers must be to God the Father (Luke 2:49; Mark 3:31-35). Leaving one’s natural family behind, even literally, was regularly expected of Jesus’s first followers

The verses you referenced from Matthew 10:34-36 do highlight the challenging and divisive nature of Jesus's teachings. However, it's important to interpret these passages within the broader context of Jesus's overall message and mission. . When Jesus speaks of hating one's family in comparison to one's commitment to following him, he uses strong language to emphasize the radical priority of discipleship. This doesn't mean LITERAL hatred or abandonment of family members but rather a call to prioritize our relationship with God above all else, including our closest earthly relationships. Jesus emphasizes the necessity of wholehearted devotion to him, which may at times result in tension or conflict within families due to differing religious beliefs. . It's crucial to balance these teachings with other passages where Jesus stresses the importance of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation within families. For example, Jesus teaches about honoring parents (Mark 7:10-12) and emphasizes the importance of love and unity among believers (John 13:34-35). Additionally, Jesus himself demonstrates compassion and care for his mother even while fulfilling his mission (John 19:25-27). . Regarding the idea of leaving behind one's natural family to follow Jesus, it's important to recognize that this was a specific calling for Jesus's disciples (see Matthew 10:1-5) in a particular historical and cultural context. While some early followers did leave behind their families to join Jesus in his ministry, this does not necessarily imply a universal command for all believers. . So, while Jesus's teachings may challenge our priorities and allegiances, they are ultimately rooted in the call to love God and love others. This includes honoring and cherishing our families while remaining faithful to our commitment to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. Jesus's teachings should lead us to deeper relationships marked by love, grace, and reconciliation, even amid tensions that may arise from differing perspectives within families.

She is speaking on God's behalf to express God is especially angry for people who are questioning their leadership and that His wrath is imminent towards anyone who even has a negative thought towards the pastor.

She's giving an angry congregational word: I've never seen something so unbiblical in a church as that! Ephesians 4:15 tells us always speak the truth in love. If she has an issue with one of the members of the congregation, she needs to speak to that member individually Matthew 18:15-17 and speak in love. If the member is not willing to listen, then politely ask them to leave! All this woman is doing is allowing an evil spirit to speak through her and create fear in an ungodly way.

It's important to differentiate between honoring God above family and cutting them off simply for disagreement or criticism. The scripture in question (Matthew 10:37) was specifically directed at Jesus' twelve disciples (Matthew 10:1-5, they are mentioned explicitly by name). When you look at the entire chapter, Jesus was preparing them for the challenges they would face in spreading the gospel, knowing they would encounter persecution. And, indeed, the disciples did endure significant persecution over the course of their lifetime. . However, some misinterpret this scripture today to justify severing family ties over mere questioning or differing opinions. For instance, in this church, this woman is advocating for members to cut off family if they interfere with their view of the pastor and their distortion of the spiritual gifts. This is a significant leap from Jesus encouraging the disciples to stand firm in their faith amid tribulation to endorsing cutting off family members for disagreeing with a pastor. Such ideas echo the dangerous ideologies of cult leaders like Jim Jones and David Koresh, among others. . Matthew 10 was specifically for the twelve disciples, but we should also consider Matthew 5, which was addressed to all of Jesus' followers. In verse 44, Jesus teaches us to love our enemies, bless those who curse, do good to those who hate, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you (Matthew 5:44 NKJV).
