I have nothing but bad memories of the Pentacostal church. I remember being fearful as a child watching people speak gibberish, fall on the ground and convulse, satanic panic, conspiracy theories, armageddon etc. This fear followed me everywhere and in everything I did as a young person. Now as an adult I see the church as a emotionally manipulative mad house.
If you research and read translation by actual clergy/rabbi that speak greek and hebrew you will see that faith healing, speaking in tongues, tithing etc is all lies. RU-vid rabbi tovia singer....explains with scripture in detail about these lies.
@@VoltedSoldier You should do your own research and I am stating this in a nice way not trying to be rude. I am Pentecostal myself, I follow the Old Path not the Liberal Path. All of the things that you stated that a rabbi said it was all lies are actually not and are in the bible. First you're listening to a rabbi which doesn't even believe in the new testament or Jesus being the Messiah or son of God. Tithing is actually in the Torah which for us is the old testament. In Genesis Jacob literally made a pact with God that he was going to give the tenth percent of what God would give him if he blesses him. So is not a lie, jews are actually supposed to do tithing themselves. That's why God was calling his people thieves in Malachi ch 3 ver 8-10(in others book too God has called them thieves.) Speaking in tongues is in 1 Corinthians ch 14 ver 2-5, which explains that speaking in tongues is to speak to God not to others and no one knows what is said for it is mysteries of the spirit but it can be interpreted its in the same chapter. Speaking in tongues is a gift from the holy spirit. Healing by faith is also in the old and new testament. Read exodus 15:26, 23:25, psalms 107:19-20 plus more. In the New Testament 1 of Peter 2:24 , John 14:12 and more. So, after reading those passages let me know if you still believe they're lies :).
@@carriechapman2365 It is mentioned in Matthew ch 17 ver 14-18. A man from the crowd went in front of Jesus and stated to save his son because he has epilepsy and suffers terribly and Jesus reprimanded and a demon came out of the boy and was healed from that moment forward. I apologize if it made tou feel a type of way but whomever saud that to you should've had backed it up through the scriptures. The things that are said are said because it is written in the bible. Not saying that everyone who calls themselves a christian is one or knows about the scriptures, but that's a whole other topic. May God bless you in your journey.
I attended a Pentecostal church at an invite. Believe in God and have accepted Him in my life long ago etc …. Loved the community feel of the congregation yet the preaching was “off” and more showy and all the chaos made it hard to concentrate. Also wow. The music was uplifting yet also distracting with everyone dancing and prancing and grinding everywhere. In between my community and Baptist churches for straight up teaching I visit weekly I’ll visit them one more time
I grew up apostolic Pentecostal and always heard that the difference between us and charismatic was that charismatic taught how to speak in tongues while we believed it was something that could not be taught
Of course it can be taught. After all, all it is is jibber jabber jibber. I was briefly involved in the Catholic charismatic movement and that's all I did.
@Patrick Montgomery Be honest with yourself, Pstrick. All you are doing is going jibber jabber jibber. "How can you tell if someone is filled with the Holy Spirit? By how much they love the Catholic Church." --St. Augustine
One cannot truly teach how to speak in tongues but guide not necessarily teach how to receive the Spirit as the original apostles had. This has never stopped, just had to go underground If you will. The Holy Spirit became the Spirit of evangelism throughout the world, first using the apostles then the early believers until CHRISTIANITY became the Rome chosen religion and when pagan religious beliefs diluted the teachings of Jesus and the apostles because of many racism and bigotry of the Jewish troublemakers.
I was raised in a Pentecostal church and I just wanna say... thank you. You have shown knowledge and wisdom about our movement. Many people misunderstand us and mock us- but you have not. You simply explained. This is my first of yours that I have seen and I look forward to seeing your other videos. You have earned my subscription. Gracias & GBU
@Matthew Pace Ok... let's play your silly little game, shall we? I agree that all religions are evil and poisonous to us and to the earth... we can agree there... Then you misrepresent the golden rule, which by the way, is older than judaism and xtianity... so again, no problem there.. Then you go on to say that all the world's bibles are full of god's truth mixed with satan's lies... here we have a problem. If the bible is corrupt.. then where do you get your information about your god? The bible is really the only source.. the entire story comes from the bible, as full or error and contradiction as it is. However, without the bible ie: the torah and the rest of the old testament and the new testament, you don't really have any extrabiblical information about god and jesus etc... so how can you believe, without the bible? You have lost me here... Then again, since there is no good credible evidence that a god (or gods) exist, and also no good credible evidence that satan exists.. there really is no need to play your silly little game, as it is a moot point. You can assert this crap all you like, yet, there is no foundational truth in what you claim.
The Fool says there is no God, therefore He serves only himself and fears He will answer to The Creator of All.. The Only Book is The King James.. Keep The Truth simple, like a child.. Pray in Sincerity for Yeshua, Jesus Christ to reveal Himself to you.. Study/Read and Fast.. Allow The Father to teach you in your Spirit with the Holy Spirit.. Ignore ALL Religions.. The Messiah was not Religious, He is Only Truth..👏🙏💪☝
@Matthew Pace ok.. what are the correct god's laws you are talking about, if not in the bible? How is anyone expected to follow said rules, if no one knows what they are? Since you claim to know, please let us know. I want to know what is from god and what is from Satan... please.. help me brother...
@@Justaguywithtruth you are holding up the King James version as the correct version of the bible?? Now that's a laugh... have you researched how the king james bible came to be? It dates from the early 1600s... and was created for the church of england... and is based on the textus receptus, which themselves were a translation by earlier scholars. He could have gone back to the oldest texts we had, but he did not do this.. therefore, it is not the best translation out there... thus, more apt to be mistranslation etc... in other words, not the inerrant word of god, now is it?
A man went to the Pastor of his church and said, “I won't be attending Church anymore.” Pator said, “May I ask why?” He said, “I see people on their cell phones texting and typing during the service, some are gossiping, some just aren’t living right, some are sleeping, some are staring at me, they are all just hypocrites.” The Pastor was silent. Then he said, “Can I ask you to do something for me before you make your final decision?” He said, “Sure, what's that?” He said, “Take a glass of water and walk around the church two times and don't let any water fall out of the glass.” He said, “Yes I can do that!” He went and got the glass of water and walked around the church two times. He came back and said proudly, “It's done.” The pastor asked him these questions; “Did you see anybody on their phone?; Did you see anybody gossiping?; Was anybody living wrong?; Did you see anyone sleeping?” He said, “I didn't see anything because I was so focused on this glass, so the water wouldn't spill out” He told him, “When you come to church , you should be just that focused on God , so that you don't fall. That’s why Jesus said, ‘Follow Me’, He did not say follow them.” Don't let your relationship with God be determined by how others relate with God. Let it be determined by how focused you are with God. AMEN
I like it. Here is another; If you find a perfect church don't go there you'll ruin it. I like this church because it has a lot of hypocrites so they won't mind one more. The Church is a hospital for sinners not a country club for saints.
Hi Pat, the Rick Ross i'm referring to is famous for being perhaps the world's leading authority on deprogramming cult victims! He has gained credence and stature with a strong internet presence!
Hi Rick Ross...I just saw this message/story on Facebook this week...Good story, but my thought is that the pastor still needs to check his flock. Too much stuff going on in church nowadays, it's often a distraction to people. He should consider it a coaching moment for the congregation.
My Grandmother was married to a Pentecostal preacher that did tent revivals throughout Texas. Her mother was black Dutch and her Dad was Irish. She married the Pentecostal preacher (an Indian and Eastern European Blend). My sister was Pentecostal and is now Charismatic. We were raised in California and everyone goes to River or Bethal type churches there in her family. I wish I could be like her. She is SO hospitable and fun loving. None of us have as large, close knit, families that seem so happy. They got something right! But I never heard you aren’t Christian if you don’t speak in tongues or prophesies from ANY Pentecostal relatives. So maybe you’re not getting that part right. My Grandparents were church of God and my Sister is not.. they all love music and worshiping. I think her children are more cool young types that practice all the gifts and are kind and artsy types that are not rigid or uptight. Sweet people. I wish I could be that good and gentle natured. My experience would say they are of great faith and sweet, modern people in their eras.
This is the most comprehensive and informative presentation on Pentecostalism I have come across - full of historical facts no emotional or irrational presumptions. I salute you Ryan Reeves.
Wow, a very fair presentation! As a pentecostal pastor I am well used to intellectual slander, but who ever this man is, he has been fair and balanced in his presentation. I would like to hear more of his materials.
philipbloomfield speaking as a person attended a Pentecostal church for many years , i notice it was always attended by a lot of people who were not inclined to thinking for themselves very much
I went to a Pentecostal Church. The main book that they care about is Acts. I was baptized there, not in the name of the Father , The Son and the Holy Spirit, like Jesus taught, at the end of Matthew. As I was coming out of the water, they tried to coach me into speaking in tongues, but there was no one to interpret it. I watched them coach people repeatedly. Young children and teenagers especially. I had only went to that church for 2 weeks and they asked me to be baptized there. I had already been baptized, and the name of the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. The woman there, wore dresses down to their ankles and wore no makeup and didn't cut their hair. People ran around the room. I'm speaking about adults. I no longer go to any church. I read my Bible at home. I really dislike organized religion. I love our father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

We attend mass every week and don’t behave any differently, treating mass with reverence since we are receiving the Eucharist. However, we attend prayer meetings with other Charismatics where we pray in tongues, sing worship songs with our hands raised and we faith share. A lot of people don’t realize that Catholics can be Charismatics too and always assume we are Pentecostal so I thought I would share what it’s like. God bless!

Brother Reeves you also failed to mention the Church of God in Christ which is the oldest Pentecostal denomination and the largest in the United States. They started as a holiness movement in 1897 and begin as a Pentecostal Holiness church in 1907. They are founded by Bishop Charles Harrison Mason.

@@thewatchfullion1012 There were no denominations in the first century. Were there Christians in the first century? Yes. Therefore, being a follower of Christ does not involve being part of a denomination. Those who are members of denominations are followers of those humans who made and the later ones who run the denomination of which they are members.
What confuses me is the amount of pastors and TV evangelists who claim the Gift of healing and prophecy, yet they all teach opposing fundamental paths to Heaven. You have the oneness penticostal church who teach that Jesus Christ and God our father is the Holy spirit Today and not 3 distinct beings of the Divine God. Mormons also claim and perform convincing miracles and prophecies. in fact there are many totally opposing faiths that all claim prophecy, tongues and healing. Then you have the Prosperity Charismatics who base faith on giving them money to buy Jets, and big mansions. The one thing that saddens me is the lack of respect in the teachings of Jesus Christ as revealed in the New Testament. What I read in the book of Acts and the early church is very different from the megachurch form of moneygrabbing, praise leaders, and hand clapping that seems to typify the modern Charismatic Movement. Where is the humility, helping the needy and poor, and the need for forgiveness through the Blood of Christ, which is constantly preached in the Bible? We need to get back to worshipping God and not the mammon of many in the happy clappy feel good megachurches of today.
Worshipping God is a start, but how about actually trying to live out the teachings of Christ? When Christians start doing that, rather than acting like tyrannical assholes who wish to force the tenants of their faith on all of society by using state power to deny me marrying for love should I love the "wrong" person, or to deny rastafarians their right to smoke cannabis because they have some deluded nonsense belief that their faith makes them better, and wiser than everyone else, and many have a savior complex, believing they have the right to save the rest of us from themselves. They're tyrants in waiting, little stalinists wanting to control everyone... kind of like you'd expect the devil to do, but not followers of a truly divine being. I think Jesus Christ has the most sound claim to divinity, and I love most of his teachings. If Christians acted more like him, I'd probably have converted years ago, but they don't, so I don't want to sully my name by associating with such contemptible people who seek to control others, they are truly the lowest form of life, it doesn't matter whether they're Christian, Muslim, or Communists. Those who seek to control are beneath respect, and human dignity, they do not deserve either. Yet we should extend both to them, because that is what Christ would do.

I am not trying to be self righteous in my answer. However, I do not like or support names describing Christians as anything other than descriptions given in the early church or New testament. Pentecostal is a term that was invented at the turn of the 20th century, and further divides people into sectarian divisions. The plea of the early church of the first century was that all Christians be united in thought and mind (1 Corinthians 1:10; John 17:21) and to speak where the bible spoke and be silent where the bible is silent (2 John 1:6, John 14:15). If such a course was followed, we would not have the thousands of sectarian groups among Christianity that we see today.

I’ve had a dream where I was speaking in tongues. Visited a Pentecostal church yesterday and got baptized yesterday by a Pentecostal preacher! Life is changing!
The hardest part for me is... I left the Mormon church and the conservative norms. I've been attending a Pentacostal church for almost two years but still feel disconnected, I have also been attending a Babtist church also, but I can't seem to connect there either. Stuck in limbo I guess. I spend most of my time keeping my mouth shut because I'm still learning.
I suspect you need to be part of a more structured, historically rooted church. I see parallels between the Church of Jesus Christ - LDS and the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. LDS has a President and a Prophet, parallel to a Pope or Patriarch. Historically, is a central city for the worldwide church - Salt Lake City, Rome, and Constantinople /Istanbul. The church relies on a hierarchy of authority with power and responsibilities delegated to bishops and ministers. There are core texts - the Book of Mormon, the Holy Bible, the writings of scholars like Thomas Aquinas (Roman) and the Patristic texts (E. Orthodoxy). I grew up Episcopalian, converted to Roman Catholic, and have finally settled in as Eastern Orthodox. I have always been part of a global, historically grounded, liturgical, Christian church. I have just been working my way back to the earliest origins of Christianity and have found that Eastern Orthodoxy is the most historically authentic Christian church. It contains so many treasures, mostly little known in the Western Hemisphere. Speaking of Pentecostalism, the theological disagreement that finally divided Christianity between Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox after 1022 years(!) of fundamental agreement was over the role of the Holy Spirit. This is still very important with the Orthodox seeing the Holy Spirit as absolutely vital, coequal to Jesus Christ. The Roman Catholic interpretation is the Hoky Spirit is the love proceeding from the Father and the Son, connecting them together and therefore not coequal with the Son. Churches are filled with fallible human beings, so I'm accepting of human flaws through the centuries. But the more cellular, modular structure of the EO Church has made it more resistant to waves of heresy and apostasy through the millenia. Salt Lake City has a magnificent EO church I toured via RU-vid as part of a young Christian seeker's channel's exploration of E. Orthodoxy. I believe it was St. Philip who instructed St. Andrew to "Come and see!" Give your local EO Church a try during a Saturday evening Vespers service ir the Sunday morning Divine Liturgy. Probably best to attend one with a predominantly English language service. We adapt the Liturgy to each language, with Orthodox missionaries having translated the Bible into Innuit when spreading the faith to Alaska in the 19th Century.
GREAT VIDEO! I was born and raised in a Latino Pentecostal church and was kinda always made to feel by other believers that in the Christian Family, Pentecostals are analogous to the Crazy uncle that believes in Aliens. Believe me, I’ve heard it all. I appreciate how respectful, unbiased and informational this was. And I agree with the 4th wave you described, I see it myself, pentecostals trying to bridge Holy Ghost and Fire w/ the sound Barean mind. Spot on, Thanks again for the time it must have taken you to compile this🙏. God Bless.
I was saved in a Pentecostal church 4 and a half years ago. I think it must be different here in Scotland. Im a Pentecostal, not a charismaniac! As long as Christ Crucified is preached and The Gospel is preached everything else is secondary.
Grew up in a Pentecostal family, When I got out of high school I began attending the Episcopal church. It's been 42 years now and never been more happier in my life.
1 Corinthians 13:8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
It would be interesting to explore the rise of these movements in tandem with the rise of mass media. Faster moving print media, radio and television had to have a huge influence on this movement.
That's a great thesis question. This movement did not have the time and space to iron itself out in seclusion. It burst forth into criticism and derision and it seems its having yo iron itself out in real time. But there are some very dangerous doctrines developing too.
nice unbiased study of the Pentecostal movement. I like how you show the beginning of some other denominations as well. speaking of tongues is in the Bible and it helps you realize that the word of God has power and not just any power(voodoo, witchcraft) but all power in Christ Jesus. I believe the speaking of tongues, receiving the holy ghost is the beginning of faith, it helps you learn God's word in the spirit and helps you walk in the spirit where you once walked in the flesh. Do I believe you need it to get into heaven, I don't know but it is a wonderful thing to help get you there.
What he said & what the Bible teaches.was, The receiving of the Spirit is what Jesus gives you when you get saved. The Spirit seals you until the day of redemption. The speaking in tongues of today is not the same Biblical tongues spoken in the Bible. The real word is not tongues, it is langues, real down to earth languages that man can understand. The word tongues & unknown tongues was added in by the k.j.s people. So the tongues of today is not true Biblical languages but gibberish. The word Holy Ghost is another word that was added in by them. It's Holy Spirit. It was for the most part unbiased, but he did show that Charles Fox deviated from the scripture when he separated the work of Jesus & the Holy Spirit for salvation & said that speaking in tongues is baptism of the H.S. The Bible teaches that the work of the H.S. is to Baptise us into the church, the body of Christ. The biblical speaking in languages in the book of acts was a supernatural sign & what was supernatural was that they all heard people that did not know their languages speak in it anyways & they heard the wonders of God & they believed & Jesus started His church by saving them. Then they went out & preached the word of salvation & then there came a time when every langues knew the plan of salvation & they no longer had to speak in different languages. So the true Biblical speaking in tongues( languages) ceased. The last time we here about tongues is in the book of cor. & the reason for that is becaused they were misusing it & it is still being misused today. Today in the modern church, there has not been one example of someone speaking in a supernatural language that they do not know to a people that know that langues. Even if there was, it would have to be supernatural & that would really edified the Church the way true tongues should. Hope this helps somebody.

@Brain Dead Idiot it's needed because we do not always know what to pray. Just like in battle when the world is raining down on us our minds like to freeze up, get cought, or stuck under the weight of our problems. Tounges is supposed to be the holy ghost praying through us, praying for us. Have you ever tried to pray for three hours straight? Four hours? Five? How long will it's take you to run out of things to say? Or would you just repeat the same things over and over? How would you even know what to pray? The most necessary part of tounges is that it prays for things you know not that you need. Tomorrow you might get hit by a bus, how would you pray against it? Why is it useless if it gives you the words to say, and releases the correct and needed prayers over your life? Only God knows the future, so to pray in it somthing from God has to be used.

Gear Daddy -dispensationalism is merely a means to divide up the Bible into movements, it is not doctrine. Being Pentecostal can influence your doctrine negatively and send you to hell, but you can be a dispensationalist and it has no effect on eternity.
For the past year I have had no contact with a church, whether it be Evangelical or charismatic. After over 50 years of warming metal folding chairs and pews, helping to lead true worship, and watching the choices being made by today's leadership that are so very unscriptural, especially the nar and impartation movements, I realized how far off the path the vast majority of the church is being misled and I decided to remove myself from any further indoctrination that had been taking place in my life for far too many wasted years. I began again to long for purity, simplicity and a very word-centered community. Instead where I found myself was among an emotion driven, understudied, and wordless mass of followers. Where to go from here is pretty much up to the Lord for him to work in me both to Will and to do of his good pleasure and to let Him finish the work that he's begun in me, for it is not by might or by power but by my Spirit saith the Lord. It will take His intervention to turn things around by cleaning up the present mess.
I wouldn't say Pentocostalism is entirely unique or new. Many, many Early Christians believed in gifts and prophecies. Just look at the hundreds of miracle stories around Patrick, Nicholas, Polycarp and etc.
TheCynicogue Wel i think Polycarp as a disciple of John would have N reasons to believe in miracles an I think he was witness to cease of the gift of Holy Spirit!
I believe the point being made is that it is the only attempt to revive this broken tradition and is therefore unique in the history of the church. While he points to 3 or 4 waves, these are iterations or developments evolving from the initial attempt. Can you point to other serious, intentional attempts, gaining traction from the 4th to the 18 the centuries to revive the gifts as a tradition, ie part of normal, common christian life?
@@kenwebster5053 no, you're right that it seems after the 4th century, the Church entire does not have much charismatic teaching or history. But through individiuals, I think yes. Patrick is 5th century, and St. Blaane was believed to be a miracle worker in 6th century. Don Bosco was reportedly miracle working in the 19th century. There's numerous other examples, but it does seen to limited to individuals.
Ryan, I was filled with the Holy Spirit in May 2003. It's not something I just took on. I was actually against the idea of this for a long time until I began to study the scripture. I realize that there was a baptism in the Holy Spirit that was for every believer. That's what people are noticing today.
Study the topic of tongues in the Bible very deeply. And I mean deeply and critically. You will find that the practice in churches is not Biblical. Not being mean, just asking you to have an open mind and do a deep study.

@@vaquera9368 "Paul defined exactly what he meant by the phrase “does not speak to men but to God” in the very next line, “for no one understands.” If the language was not translated, only God would know what was being said. Clearly, Paul was far from commending such a practice. As he had already established (in chapter 12), the purpose of the gifts was the edification of others within the body of Christ. Very simple the wave as you described it. Are dispensations. Actually it's the degree of the move of the spirit of God. The mattress is spiritual. And with your plane understanding is an error. I say again the answer is spiritual' and can only be understood correctly spiritually. So there we are ' for one to spiritual 'must have the spirit of God !!!!
I will comment on your comment about being taught to speak in tongues true there's a movement today that teaches a person have to (mock) the tongues of God... and that's all it is Jabbar. For your understanding speaking in tongue it's not the person that's doing it it's a spirit of God !.... I could go further with the subject but it would only confuse you. you will( never understand spiritual things) unless you have received the (spirit of God.).
I saw a teaching which said that to be “filled with the spirit” means getting into the Word daily thus it “fills” us. We get filled with the Word which transforms us daily. The analogy of a empty glass (Christians) was shown and water added into it daily from a large pitcher (God). Eventually, the glass gets filled and filled where it overflows the more we are in the Word. That is the meaning of being filled with the spirit and not the manifestation of speaking in tongues like many believe.
@Heck Al btw, I STUDY my Bible and not just read it. Start studying it. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 Do what it says.
Remember, always test every spirit to see if it is of God. As well as everyone claiming to be a prophet and prophecy of our CREATOR. Because there will be false prophets, false teachings and false beliefs about the Word. “Seek ye first the kingdom of GOD in ALL its righteousness then “ALL THINGS” will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
Justina Musyoka Study the Scriptures prayerfully, “Seek you will find through humble asking your heavenly FATHER who has promised to give abundantly to all who has: 2 Chronicles 7:14-16 and trust in the grace that our CREATOR has provided for “all who will” believe.
I am Pentecost. I was raised that it's okay to jump and clap your hands and stand during worship rather than sit and drink coffee. I always thought Pentecostal was those who have high outward expression concerning the love of Jesus.
"I thought", as you said is your problem. "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." If you can't prove all you believe by the King James Bible, you're in danger. Pentecost is a Jewish festival occuring 50 days after Passover. It is NOT the beginning of the church. It is NOT associated with The Body of Christ today. In other words, the Pentecostal Churches are based on a LIE. Have you ever read Acts 2, where the 12 Apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost? Peter addresses in verse 22, "Ye men of Israel .", and in verse 36, "..let all the house if Israel.." Peter is NOT addressing you or me or any gentile.
lynn brown Wait ....... While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, (Acts 10:44-46) How about the gifts? Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: (1 Corinthians 12) Are you not poisoning the word of God with your opinion?
No, not at all. it’s just that the 1904 revival in Wales is often credited as inspiring the Azusa Revival. I’m coming at this as a student of history, not a judge of the hearts of revivals.
As a former upci minister I can tell you you are spot on as far as the fourth wave. I was one of those individuals. As far as intellectualism the colleges are somewhat of a joke, I do not mean that in an insulting way but some of these "college courses" are basically Bible studies that I've heard for many years. I am glad to see that they are moving forward as far as learning Greek and Hebrew and doing historical research, hopefully it will pull the movement out of ignorance. it is exceedingly difficult to let go of some of these Pentecostal doctrines, as Bart d erdman puts it it is very traumatic, especially if you have family still in this movement. Love your videos.
We can have any of these gifts. They all are important but the greatest gift is love. Without love we can hang it all up....lord....help us love as you loved us....amen.
@Ecc12:13 The gifts were a sign to them which didn't believe /., Mainly showing the Jews that the Kingdom has been extended to the Gentiles. Even the Apostles no longer exhibited the gifts. Sure we still have healing and God answers prayer but the kind of power exhibited in the first years went away . Everyone would have believed and there would be no use of speaking about faith. The Gospel would not need to be spread, with words, People would see the healing and the signs and wonders. We would not need faith/. Greater is he that believes without seeing .. Matthew 28. Practically everyone i knew during the Jesus freak movement on the seventies and the charismatic movement no longer follow Jesus . The modern belief in the supernatural gifts disappointed people and they based belief on what they saw rather than on faith . Faith cannot be taken away or lost because it is not based on this world. You must admit you have never seen the kind of healing Jesus Did in today's world. Healing of the soul is the important thing. Believe me i know it hurts.
@@mytwopennorth7216 1 Corinthians 13: 8. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
Why would Pentecostals focus on the gift speaking in tounges, like it will save you. If the GENUINE gift of tounges still bestowed by the Holy Spirit I think He would give it to some people but not most. I dont think gift speaking in tounges will make you love everyone, I ask God mostly that love in me will grow towards God and my neighbor. I never spoke in tounges and dont want to, I'd rather have a gift of love grow in me rather than speak in millions of tounges of men or angels.
Yes that scripture is correct it gave all the gifts n said they would ceast but Love will never ceast n is the greatest that is the moral of the text. Not gifts everyone looks over that Its called context. If we read tge buble in context it clears up the " tongues" issue. If God does everthing i. decency n order. Whats the exact order they recieved tongues. What exactly the happened. They were all in one place waiting, they heard a mighty rushing wind, it filled the room, tongues of fire on they head, they began to speak in "tongues" languages from every nation not jibberish. Then they had power to got witness around the world!!!!! Making disciples n baptizing people. No angelic personal prayer language smh bible doesnt even teach that because if it did it would say this is for prayer. How shall we pray? Our Father who art in heaven.....
Thank you for this informative and sensitive explanation, and for all the historical background of this channel. My ancestral family was very much influenced and changed by the Welsh revival of 1905, which spread around the world and specifically to South Africa. So this marginally predated the Azusa Street revival in the USA. Our family was involved in Pentecostal revivals as missionaries in the Congo in the 1950's. At that time some mainline denominations considered speaking in tongues demonic. The charismatic renewal/Jesus movement that captivated me later on considered itself non-denominational, simply taking the New Testament church and the book of Acts as its guidelines. As a university student this was so refreshing! Important to note that the large majority of charismatics today are within the Roman Catholic church, subsequent to Vatican ll, and encouraged by Pope Francis as a "current of grace", and there is recognition that this is a powerful ecumenical move. A good read is "Azusa, Rome and Zion" by Peter Hocken.
In your list of Pentecostal Denominations, you mentioned the Church of God of Prophecy instead of the Church of God(Cleveland, Tennessee) which is the more common (7 million people) denomination from which the COGOP split. Not a bad thing, just kinda funny! Very good video, I enjoyed it!
I have a background in the Charismatic Movement from the 70s. Pride was very predominant as they looked at reg Christian’s as lacking. I reject those teachings now as I’m a cessationist and happy to be unburdened by it. I think they’ve gotten away from sola scriptura and into heresies.
Raised fully indoctrinated Catholic, at 16, in 1982, received Christ in a quasi holy ness, militant Pentecostal Church (badged but not exactly Foursquare) it was a real experience that I carry until now. Think that 1996 was the end of 3rd wave, or the beginning thereof. Appreciate your blending of secular/religious history.
I have experienced this kind of worship a few times, it's a mix bag of emotions, especially during the speaking in tongues part, its awkwardness, confusion, some sort of euphoria and shivers running through the body. Idk man, speaking in tongues, I couldn't do it, I couldn't understand what anyone else is saying/ doing.. it's not for me..
Samuel Stone, I am still Presbyterian bcz Pentecostals and charismatic are cults. Just as other cults the head/leader makes the money as evidence that many Pentecostal preachers like Benny Hinn and others are multi-millionaires. It will adversely affect preaching 'the gospel in India more difficult. Logically, many of their practices such as faith healing through prayers without medical testing before and after the prayer is absurd. Invariably the Holy Spirit descends in their gatherings preferably on those raised in their tradition while leaving behind other Christians worship the same Jesus Christ of the same Holy Bible attending their fellowship or in the mainline traditional churches. It is absurd and false. Usually, their membership consists of lesser educated people who are guided by their fear in their hearts and less through understanding and faith in the Lord. Satyemeva Jayete (truth shall prevail.
@ Prasanto Mukherji, I'm indian too bro and i would like to inform you that when i was in Presbyterian church i didn't even understand the " born again" experiancing let along the "Baptism of the Holyspirit", but after I atended a charismatic church with my friend, i got born again and was baptized in the Holyspirit. the born again experience and the in-filling of the Holyspirit are as real as when we gaze at the sun on a clear morning..Presbyterian, Baptist, CNI, catholic, church of God, church of England, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, etc,etc ( all main stream Protestants and Catholic) are dead church because they don't know who the Holyspirit is and are devoid of its power. hence these churches are less impactful to the world.
@@samuelstone3595 Do you know the difference between the UPC and the Assembly of God ? Are you in the Jesus only movement that claims you must be baptized in the Name of Jesus only and have evidence of speaking in tongues before you are truly saved > Just wondering ?
@@sammyzeo722 I think that was a rhetorical question . But yes the Jesus only movement is pretty far out . But they sure are dedicated. But i have a couple friends and know a minster pretty well on a personal basis.
I describe myself as a new world catholic, and have started to study the Bible, history and to study these newer religions. I am interested in knowing why they started. I'm not here to judge but to understand the thought behind it. To be clear I'm not here to offend or judge. I'm just here for the history of it.
Oh believe me, having grown up Pentacostal, these people HATE the Catholic Church. Don't treat them like just another group of Christians. They actively want to work towards dismantling the Church.
The first Pentecostal Denomination is the Church of God in Christ, founded in 1907. The leader of the denomination, Charles H. Mason ordained the first elders of the Assemblies of God denomination which was founded in 1914 at Hot Springs, Arkansas. Just interested in why this information was left out.
Founded in 1900s? Lol, that means you are following the teachings of man. Catholic/Greek orthodox, judaism, Islam at least has ties to founding fathers/apostles....
Interesting cultural phenomenon. The gift of speaking in other languages was for the nascent Church in order to spread the gospel. It's hard to see the link between that and the incoherent, non-linguistic "speaking in tongues" that seems to characterize these modern movements. Do they speak in Chinese, for example, so that they can preach to the Chinese?
I can speak in tongue since I was 14 the gift first touched me when i was 11 and it developed from words to sentences and if I'm fully in the spirit then all different, and no its not a known human language it's a communication between the almighty, I have no idea what Im saying but its flows right through, thats why people who speak in tongues speak so fast someyimes because u don't need to think what your saying it just speaks
I don't think everyone realizes there was a split around the late 1920's The Assembly of God Pentecostal Church and The United Pentecostal Church Split
One of the original founders....F f Bosworth....left the assembly of God because they were going into error by teaching that tongues is the evidence of the holy ghost.....
That's why there are so many workers of iniquity today.....professiing to be pentacostal because they speak with tongues hogwash..... Speaking with tongues doesn't.make you pentacostal...... Being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and following the way of holiness is what makes you a Pentecostal....and tongues is just something that happens naturally and not always immediately.... Jesus christ didn't speak in tongues until he was near the hour of his death........ These deceivers today act like you can bypass Being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and following the way of holiness.....the only thing that matters is that you speak with tongues which is really perverted
Neing Apostolic Pentecostal Oneness is truth Acts 2:38 is truth biblical but tithes is not pulpit heirachy and so forth is not Apostles doctrine tithing was strickly for jews
Being emotional is a human thing. People get emotional when they are in a football game and a goal is scored. How much more can we get emotional when God who we don't experience in the natural just comes to us by his Spirit. It brings very sweet emotions. There may errors with some doctrines but the major things are right.
The speaking in tongues that we see today is NOT the biblical tongues seen in the book of Acts...there is 1 and only 1 place where we are told exactly what tongues was...Acts 2 verses 1 through 12....no where else is it so plainly shown....tongues were other earthly languages...nothing else and certainly not a the gibberish seen today...believe what you like as for me I will stick with what is clearly shown comparing scripture with scripture...
@Patrick Montgomery Acts 2 is the ONLY place in scripture that clearly tells us exactly what "tounges" clearly are...if there were other places you would have stated where to find it.
@Patrick Montgomery the "other tongues" are still earthly languages...that's all...nothing more...Acts 2 is clear about that...show me 1 other place that DESCRIBES another like Acts 2 does...you cant because there is none...
@Patrick Montgomery other tongues = other earthly languages....it nothing more than that....there were no "heavenly languages" being spoken like the gibberish that goes on in the Pentecostal churches today.
@Patrick Montgomery IF IF IF the gibberish that is spoken in Pentecostal churches was of God you would have NO WAY of knowing if it was or was not Biblical / the same as was spoken back then because you weren't there and scripture is silent as to the language that was spoken...while I cant prove it biblically I believe satan has those people cursing God and they dont know it....at best its just gibberish...
You missed quite a bit in regards to Parham and Seymour. Movements are historic, but that doesn’t mean you cannot critique it for its unbiblical significance or its scandalous nature for that time. You can absolutely critique the movement through the lens of that time period. You did touch on the racism, which did exist back then, but you completely ignored the interviews in regards to Azusa street as to why they were critical of Seymour for reasons other than racism. There were widespread reports that sexual assaults occurred by Seymour and the other leaders to the female participants in the revival. Parham, who was Seymour’s mentor, admitted to sexually assaulting a child in San Antonio. He first admitted the crime, but when he realized he’d be hanged for his crime, he then retracted his admission of guilt and pleaded not guilty with a statement that said that sodomizes the boy child while he was asleep, and therefore was not aware of actually committing the crime of child rape. These two men were both social outcasts with mental illness.
I grew up in a very ritualistic religion and had no issues with it because I didn’t know the difference until I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the necessary evidence of speaking in tongues in 1974. It was an incredible, joyful life transforming experience that till this day my passion and love for the Lord and His word still burns. Since that time I could not be joined to a denomination. Charismatic comes from the Greek word Charis which means the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit. Charismatics believe in signs and wonders and that Christians are saved without the glorious Baptism in the Holy Spirit. However, I equate the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is to the Christian walk as gasoline is to a car. I can’t imagine being a Christian without it. I would encourage people to read Another wave of Revival about the powerful Azusa Street move of God. There is much misrepresentation and misunderstanding about the Charismatic movement so I would encourage people to seek Him and focus on the Lord and ask Him to guide you into a deeper relationship with The Spirit of Truth. I appreciate what you said at the very end of this seminar about the vast spread of this movement.
Hi I think if I've read your text correctly?? That you received the Baptism of The Holy Spirit by recognition of the sudden ability of speaking in tongues? If that is correct, then you have sadly been deceived by a false Spirit, that definitely didn't come by God's grace through faith in Christ. Apologies if that isn't what you meant. But I won't apologise in telling you that you are a tare amongst Christ wheat field.
@Doug Gauzy Hi Technically, that's true, well spotted. Unfortunately for yourself you are still in error. If you carry on reading the book of Acts, Peter refers to the incident of chapter 2 in chapters 10-11. He looks at what is happening in 10-11 and explains its the same experience as of chapter 2. Hope this clears up your mistake?
Pentecostalism is not defined by "speaking in tongues" . That great sovereign grace Baptist preacher , Dr. D. Martin Lloyd Jones did not believe that spiritual gifts had ceased with the apostolic ministry of the apostles. Pentecostalism is not a cult. That is nonsense. Pentecostals, like all evangelical Christians, believe in the essentials of the faith , but they believe in the continuation of the spiritual gifts.
When I hear Pentecostal or Charismatic I immediately hide my wallet, write a sign that says I am mute, and politely turn down every drink, especially Kool-Aid.
Hilarious, but completely factual. Pentecostal preachers throw tantrums over tithes. They esteem for a lavish lifestyle that goes unchecked. Ken Gurley is an example of this. He pastors a Pentecostal mega church in Texas and lives in a multi million dollar, water front home. Some years ago, he wrote a letter to the Pentecostal leaders that the pastor should be the final say of the checkbook in the church. With no oversight. Of course! He wants that money
I am not Pentecostal however I believe that when you compare the way the people in ACTS worshipped and acted, the Pentecostal religion is nearly identical to the first Christian gatherings. I find no problem with the Pentecostals. THey are dynamic.
You all must be going to the wrong Pentecostal churches. They do not all believe the same things. The Charismatics are different. My church is one of the oldest in the country - 102 - years old. My church has it right for sure.
I told I brother once when I was in jail, before being saved by Christ... I said: “I don’t believe in speaking with tongues.” He said: “You need to read the Book of Acts.” THANK GOD I DID! A year after I was saved, “Jesus baptized me in the Holy Spirit.” (Matt 3:11) and that was accomplished by me speaking in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave the utterance! What a night that was! As the Apostle Paul said: “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all.” Go Read: (Acts 2:1-4; 10:44-46; 19:1-6) Jesus Saves, Jesus Baptizes with the Holy Spirit, Jesus is coming again!
Remembering 1992 ALL HAVE SINNED AND HAVE FALLEN SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD. UNLESS YOU REPENT YOU WILL PERISH... ADDICTS, FELONS, AND PROSTITUTES GO INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD BEFORE PEOPLE WHO ARE SELF RIGHTEOUS. JESUS DIED FOR YOUR SIN AND MINE

When people were forced to recite the rosary and repent before a man.Smoking and alcohol allowed. My dad died due to complications from alcoholism yet he was an elder in the Catholic church.
Pentecost happened once in the NT. Man wanted to experience what they read, trying to "feel" God's presence, instead of walking by faith they wanted to walk by "sight" or feelings.
Nothing to do with feelings, all to do with God's Holy Spirit moving in peoples in various lands according to the His plans to draw the church age to a close with the rapture, and prepare those left behind for a 7 year Tribulation (Daniel's 70th week of the Jews).
My experience (a long time ago) was that Pentecostal services were emotionally manipulative, the pastor was trying to convince himself of what he was saying and that they "broke the rules" about speaking in tongues (according to the Bible)
Hi, just wondering, what do You mean about break the rules speaking in tongues? I have experienced them too, and there is lots going on I dont like, yes!
@@mikegintz5256 Are You sure. Jesus always said; test the spirit. I've seen many kinds of «talking in tongues», that I doubt was from God. No, just tell me how to test the spirit, please!
I grew up in a Black Classical Pentecostal Holiness church, in the South where most Sundays you can’t tell it from a Black Southern Baptist Church. I received Christ as Savior and was taught the fundamentals of the scriptures and the faith there. I received the baptism of water and the Holy Ghost and spoke in tongues. Other than our at times expressive worship which stems from our understanding of scripture and African heritage-what is preached, taught and lived is not very different from any other mainline churches. Our church was started in 1886 known as the Holy Churches of North Carolina and Virginia. Many of these people were kicked out or left their Black Methodist and Baptist church for their expressive worship and which they called “Fire Baptism” which was apart of the Latter Rain Movement in the late 19th Century. Some of our leaders heard of Azusa and some went to the revival but weren’t astonished at the manifestations because they already occurred in many Black Baptist and Methodist churches in the South and the the Holiness churches.
Thanks for sharing background on these movements. I"m amazed by the extent to which the charismatic movement has permeated evangelical Christianity. I appreciate your insights.

4455/ 4455 When that which is perfect has come ..... in other words, after the last judgement when the earth is completely redeemed and the Heavenly Jerusalem comes down to earth and God himself dwells on the earth with his people.
@@elizabethtaylor9242 You are adding to what it actually says to justify your beliefs. Nowhere in that verse says that those things will cease when you think.
Denise M 1Corinthians verse 9-10 says we know in part and prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. Reading the Bible as a whole, it seems very clear that perfection existed before the fall in Genesis, and will return in Revelation 21. Verse 12 says, For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know John just as I am known. Between The Garden of Eden and Revelation 21 and 22 there is nothing and no one perfect except Jesus the Messiah who we will see face to face in heaven and on the redeemed earth. Maybe even in the Millennium Kingdom gifts of prophecy and tongues will still be necessary because although it will be exceedingly good, it will not be perfect. There will still be death, even though there is peace and life spans will be long. It is only right at the end on the new earth that there will be no more death or sorrow and no more tears. Only then will there be perfection.
Denise M Well you aren’t saying anything to convince me otherwise. My beliefs are justified in the normal way, by looking at the whole word of God, not just one verse.
The difference between Pentecostal and Charismatics was Pentecostals teach Tongues are the initial experience in every area, Charismatics tongues are manifestation but not of necessity the initial in a believer
I am a 4th mvmt pentecostal. (I appreciate that distinction.)The unitarian (oneness)doctrine that arose in a somewhat novel way out of 1st wave, and has kept the UPC most intact of that designation, helps connect the sanctification of the son and signs of the holy spirit. Just as husband and wife are one flesh, they share one spirit. Baptism into Christ implies a baptism into the church. The holy spirit is the spirit of God as it is embodied in mankind, now thru Christ, in the church. I think it's great that Pentecostal unitarians clarified this. The Holy Spirit is not a person, but the church is. The single question which dogs the movement is then: does there need to be a definable sign that the individual is accepted by the Holy Spirit into the church body? One can argue that it is the post-Apostolic church, that lives and accepts the individual based on their confession and holy living. Say this is case closed, but then there is no reason to discourage the ongoing praying in tongues, as Paul encourages it, with limitations. I prayed through, to use the official parlance. I must admit that it was an edifying part of my walk. But it is the love I first witnessed in my early days that still captivates me, not that I can pray in the spirit. One can be doubted as to its significance, the other is unequivocable. Other than these details, I gathered much interesting info from your presentation.
Thanks for the history lesson. I find it all fascinating as a history buff. Though I find the thread that ties most all religions together is a penchant for power, money and political control at the highest levels, done through the manipulations of the masses. It's all dark and truly disgusting.
The best comment I found. I was a history buff my whole life. Until recently. It has become very obvious and undeniable almost all history is a lie. Especially religious history. Religious leaders are the worst if the worst. They have the EXACT perception of themselves Hitler had of himself. Kind of like a politician X 2. I am very spiritual but highly anti religion. Spirituality is freedom, religion is slavery.
Satan takes good things and distorts them. The 3rd wave kinda went off the rails, first 2 were 👍 Hopefully with the emerging 4th wave we have a repudiation of all the junk brought by the celebrity/prosperity gospel preachers.
