Pentonville Prison: From Construction to Notorious Reputation!
The prison sits on the Caledonian Road a couple of miles north of Pentonville itself, in Barnsbury. Built in 1842, the prison became the blueprint for a futher 50 prisons across the UK as the central design was seen as revolutionary.
Built for short term inmates awaitng imprisonment or transportation to the "colonies", Pentonville had a fearsome reputation. Prisoners were not allowed to talk to each and were held in what were known as "coffins". Hangings were rife here but in 1961 the last one took place at the prison.
It is today a decaying piece of outdated Victorian penal architiecture, and is now seen as an example of how not to detain prisoners.
