People across the United States are marking ‘Juneteenth’ on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the country. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it was not until two years later that Union troops in Texas announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved people in the state were free. Today, the holiday serves to celebrate modern African American culture, and reflect on the stark racial inequalities that remain in the US. Ellen Gainsford has this report from New York.

End of slavery without paying reparations means nothing. Black Americans should be paid reparations then we can believe in complete freedom

Africa needs to foot the bill. They still practice slavery there. We should send the bill to them. They were the ones who sent slaves to America. They are the ones who should pay reparations.

Will you then renounce your citizenship and leave as well? Otherwise it means nothing. Why should there be reparations? No other slaves got that in history. Also why not ask for it from the African tribes and nations who first sold everyone?

I remember all those union soldiers who sacrificed their lives to end slavery. Without them none of this would have been possible. They are the unsung heroes.
