Andrea Ypsilanti, leader of the Social Democrats in Hessen, never made any secret of her desire to replace Christian Democrat State Premier Roland Koch. But her plan failed when four of her own party colleagues refused to support her in her bid on the grounds that that they could not in good conscience support her plan to cooperate with the Left Party â a plan which Ypsilanti had supposedly ruled out. SPD and the Greens were to form a minority government, with the Left party agreeing to keep the coalition in power by supporting it in key parliamentary votes.
