I haven't seen anyone wearing the BB58 except on the web. Everyone is wearing a smartwatch except me it seems. Mechanical watches are more niche than we think.

More and more people are wearing mechanical watches nowadays. There used to he an uptrend with smartwatch but it has fallen behind as the lack of status people attach to a wrist computer in the minds of the people. If a man wants to where jewelry with some masculinity, a real watch is more and more to be considered the way to go in the city landscape.

The BB58 was my most worn watch in 2020. In 2021 I bought a no date sub. And then sold the sub because I prefer the BB58. I didn't settle for the BB58 vs. the sub, I prefer it. To me the BB58 provides a much better look and fit.

would you mind elaborating? i've been eyeing the no-date as a grail piece and currently own a BB58. I've tried on a more modern 40mm date sub and it just barely fits my wrist. Like most, a Sub is almost a mandatory piece for a collection. However, my primary qualm with the no-date is the overall age of most pieces available for sale...I'm not looking to get one and have to service it sooner than later. Also, the prices are crazy right now. Thanks!

exactly my thoughts, the Sub suddenly seems boring when compared to the BB58, a lot of people just can't get over the Rolex snobbery and dismiss everything from Tudor because apparently "you just buy Tudor because you couldn't get a Rolex"...and that's coming from someone that owns watches from both brands.

It’s certainly my favourite. I also don’t see this as a cheap Rolex Submariner, I find it’s entirely different. All's fun till you realize the movement isn't really in-house. Tudor funded and put together a third party team in a separate company to design and produce these movements. So long as Tudor doesn't produce or design their own movements as in vertical integration, MT movements are not in house. No wonder Breitling, Chanel and other watches use "Tudor in-house" movements. They're literally not in-house. Also, note how Tudor refuses to use that terminology on their website, instead italicizing the term "Manufacture" and adding asterisks wherever this is present. They're legally not allowed to veil the movements as produced by them.

As long as it would take me to save for a luxury watch, I'm not going to be in the mood to play the waiting list game at a Rolex AD. So the BB is a very compelling proposition, and it has all the classic good looks that I would want. Sounds like the BB could be an even better value in the near future.

Don't hesitate, grab the BB58. You won't be disappointed. I haven't worn my Submariner since I got the 58. Your comments are very interesting, and they made me rejoice once more (like I even needed to) at my decision to drop all my social media profiles a while back. It is amazing the effect that they can have over the perceived value of any given item. My collection includes all of the three watches you mentioned and luckily I have no idea as to how exciting or boring they might be regarded in the community, which leaves me the opportunity of appreciating them just for what they actually are and what they mean to me. Actually, I would suggest another reason why people might be dumping their standard, black dial BB58: Tudor is coming out with many variations on that theme, which are by nature more rare and thus more appealing. I'm on the waiting list for a bronze one myself and briefly considered dropping the black dial once I will get that that one; but then I figured what the hell, it's a great and very capable watch and will have a specific place in the collection even after its brother gets here.

Majority of people have no clue what they like, only what they have been told to like. This has been magnified through social media. That’s why everyone is stuck on the same watches from the same brands. Example the BB58. It’s a real shame because there are so many great brands ( Fortis, Sinn, all the under $1,000 Swatch group brands…etc) with unique offerings at a compelling price. It’s always the same half a dozen brands being chased after by the cool kids and everyone else follows.

One of the main reasons there are so many new/barely used Tudors on Ebay, Marketplace etc is because for one to get a Rolex, one has to more than likely buy a Tudor first, or a watch like an Omega Seamaster if the AD also carries Omega. Once one gets the call that the steel Rolex has arrived (if one is lucky to get the call) then the Tudor and the Omega get sold at a loss, but a much smaller loss that if one buys the a rolex from a grey dealer. Let's say I want a Rolex Sub, retail $8100. I buy a Tudor black bay and an Omega seamaster on strap for $8500, once the Sub arrives I sell both the Tudor and the Omega for $6500 or a little more. I lost 2k, but if I get the Sub from a grey I will overpay 5k or more. And I have a full set with my name on the papers. Sad reality, but Rolex is sacrificing the Tudor brand watches by forcing people who want a steel Rolex to buy them

The Tudor Black Bay 58 is a remarkable watch in and of itself, in all of it's incarnations. I think many enthusiasts like to flip, trade, trade up, etc., and since the BB58 is a popular watch, there are simply more of them out there to sell. Same with the Speedy. It's everywhere for a reason besides social media- it's an important and technically marvellous watch. IG and the interwebs are a magnifier, but that's all. You're right- Definitely don't buy a BB58 instead of a Sub, but I see people buy a BB58 first, enjoy it, then sell it to put themselves closer to something else. Or keep it forever because it's awesome. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Before I knew it, I'm a graduate and working in accounting, and BOOM the BB58 comes out 2018 slimmer, smaller, exclusive movement to the series... Ran to the AD to grab one as my first luxury watch and it has been on my wrist every day since. I didn't even give the other brands a thought when the AD suggested them, heck he gave me a seamaster, a Longines and some other luxury art deco watch to try on. Just wasn't for me. Pushed em aside for the one I knew I'd always want and didn't regret it. In different positions mine is regulated to -3/+1, I have kept mine almost exactly to the second every month, only moving the hands to adjust daylight savings. I'll wear this one in with a nice patina all over and pass it down to my son/daughter.

I'm more interested in the marketing and consumer behavior than the watches themselves. In a desperate move to stop the bleeding from the quartz crises, taking decades to transition, the Swiss watch industry switched from tool to jewelry. Now the luxury watch consumer has become acclimated to the high price points. My thought is overall, all Swiss watches, volume of sales have tumbled to about 1/4 of its peak and the higher price points have helped the industries bottom line. The Swiss are still perceived as the most desirable in terms of luxury and craftsmanship but the latter is changing. Even China, a low tier maker, can't afford to stay in that position much longer because of rising costs. I would agree hype, emotion and social standing affects the Swiss luxury watch market greatly.

I have found you're EXACTLY right in terms of HOW BRAINLESSLY LED some people are. I used to watch the watchfinder channel and at least twice they showed watches that were BUTCHERED crap, you could see it RIGHT THERE on the screen how bad the quality was. And then the comments would be 98% POSITIVE. I remember watching one that had an engraved and skeletonised movement and they had made a REAL mess of it, and one comment was "this watch is so incredibly made that I had to clean my screen and watch a second time!". Only a few comments told the truth and pointed out all the screw ups, for people to DEFEND the screw ups on a watch that was nearly 10 THOUSAND bucks! FAR TOI MANY of these people are the types who could be served poop and told it was chocolate icecream and BELIEVE it. I saw a video on another channel where it MAINLY showed ROBOTS making the watch to then go into the comments and see stuff MARVELLING about how it was FULLY HANDMADE.... meanwhile eBay is ABSOLUTELY FLOODED with old USSR watches that were ACTUALLY FULLY hand assembled with mechanically automated lathes making the cogs, and ALMOST NONE of these guys are interested! I have seen the ACTUAL footage from the 50s or 60s of these HUGE long hand assembly lines of Russian women making these watches all dressed in white. I also have a swiss watch myself that is a pin pallet of junk quality, along with my father who has a ton of broken swiss pin pallet watches from his parents and grandparents.

This might be another reason the Black Bay 58 is starting to get flipped or will be soon. You are so right about social media falling in love and making the Tudor BB 58 it's darling. The effect is that a lot of first time luxury watch buyers get drawn into this model. When people are first time buyers of luxury they love what they buy and even go back to the videos or reviews that got them interested in the watch in the first place. But sooner or later these buyers start eyeing other great watches and even question their purchase. Purchasing your first luxury watch means being fairly new to watch buying. It's not easy making the perfect choice especially when everyone is telling you what the perfect watch is. I know this because I was one of those people that finally flipped my 41 mm Tudor Black Bay. If you don't know you could buy a very good pre-owned Black Bay 41 mm with box and papers and bracelet for $2,000 5-6 years ago.

I live in nj and besides my own I only saw 1 person with a black bay.I bought a bb58 blue a year ago and a Rolex Ad called me 2 months ago if I still wanted the submariner I put my name down for.Of course I bought that too and let me tell you I love my Tudor bb 58 more after getting the sub because it made me realize how much watch you get for the money.I admit my sub and op39mm almost doubled in value while Tudor stayed the same but as my wife says you will never sell them so it doesn’t matter.If it is hard for you to get a sub because of your financial situation Tudor Black Bay is the best watch to get.Also I think Tudor bb has much better build quality than older submariners

As an owner of a BB58, I wouldn’t say the Submariner is a competitor. They’re completely different experiences on the wrist. I actually feel like the BB58 feels more refined. The Sub feels to me much more if a bombproof tool watch. BB58 is thinner, smaller, no crown guards, rose gold accents, decoration on the bracelet (faux rivets)… etc. the solution, get both!

So basically, your buying habits are dictated by what those around you are purchasing. You are not buying watches or cars for their intrinsic value or your subjective desire, but are making decisions based on your concern of the opinions of those around you. What the hell?? If a watch is of high quality, looks good and I want to buy it, I buy it. Not once would it enter my head “yea, nah, not buying this because it’s just all over Insta”. I don’t care if one person owns it or a million, I buy what I want.

I bought the BB58 blue a few months after it came out and ended up selling it about 2-3 months later. It was basically perfect but after wearing it awhile I just realized I preferred something with a bit more heft and a more toolish nature and went with a Seamster Nekton. The BB58 was more comfortable, more timeless in its design, more versatile, perfect proportions etc. and the Seamaster feels more like a chunk of steel diving equipment strapped to my wrist but that feeling won out as it just resonated with me more.

I have several watches including a Submariner and a Datejust. I pretty much exclusively wear the BB58 that I picked up slightly used for £2k. I think it's just beautiful, it keeps amazingly accurate time and I think it is far more interesting and beautiful to look at than either of my Rolex's. It is also phenomenal value for money. I'll never sell my BB58, it's a timeless classic and will look just as good in 30 years time as it does today. I might however sell my Sub as it's just been sat in its box for the last year since it got ousted by the BB58.

I have this watch and I think it's a fantastic watch. I've been a watch collector for around 12 years now. I find it unfair to compare this to the rolex sub. I feel over the past few years the rolex has moved further away from pure watch collectors to people who have come into a few ££ and want to show that wealth. I feel Tudor is much more towards loving watches for being watches and not value. I am wearing the back bay as I type this. Only one other watch in my collection do I prefer over it and that is my Speedmaster. Guys, please dont get caught in the hype of which watch brand it more expensive than the other. Wear watches because you love them because they connect with you regardless of the RRP. I love watches and never, ever look down on anyone elses brand. I can appreciate each watch as an individual. All the best. Thank you to the author for this well made video.

I agree somewhat. Sometimes it’s a journey to find what you really like though. I think we’ve all bought a watch we really wanted only to find it didn’t work out, disappointingly. And I think I appreciate the variety of having several cheaper watches, instead of just one or two very expensive watches. And for some, it’s the journey, not necessarily the destination. I mean, one’s taste in watches can change also I think. Even if I got my grail watch, not sure I’d be happy wearing it all the time. Perhaps I would, not sure I want to put all my eggs in one basket finding out though.🤔😅
@khronokraze
@khronokraze 2 года назад
@@rosspfeffer5185 I don't believe in grail watches. That seems to imply that's the be all and end all of a watch collection.. I simply believe there are certainwatches you really really want. And, I'm certainly not discounting more affordable watches. And, I've definitely felt I had to get and experience certain watches and later found they weren't worth keeping. You never really know until you know for yourself. There's always an idea built up of what it may be like to have a certain watch and getting it. But, the reality, once obtained, may or may not live up to the hype in my head and heart. The journey and path is never 100% clear. But, I would still say it should be well thought out as possible to minimize the wasted money and time, especially if you're on a limited budget.
@rosspfeffer5185
@rosspfeffer5185 2 года назад
@@khronokraze Fair comment, I misunderstood your grail watch idea. You make some great comments. When there are competing priorities on the budget yes, research and contemplation bodes well. And yes, it’s a false economy not to get the model you want (within reason) and lose money along the way faffing around with ‘stepping stone’ models although one can afford to try cheaper ones to see what one likes when living with a watch, to a point. And even buying something with great specs on a great sale is a false economy if your heart isn’t in it. An expensive lesson I suppose. Appreciate this conversation!

I have this question, but what if the watch that you love is discontinued, I've been debating myself for the past month if to buy a Certina DSPH200M/500M, CW Dartmouth or a Helson Sharkmaster 300, because the watch I love, the Omega Seamaster Big Triangle, aka the MOD Seamaster, is discontinued, and finding one in good condition costs me an arm, a leg, and another person's kidney. I really don't know what to do, because when I see the vintage examples the Helson loses its charm, as that Omega symbol in the dial and crown is beautiful, the CW lacks the Water resistance even though is MOD issued and falls right into it, and the Certina lacks the dial that gives the watch is name, even though it has an amazing history and story, and obviously buying a fake is out of the question, man I really don't know what to do with it, any advise for an enthusiast
