I stay home and don't go on vacations not because I can't afford to eat out or go to Europe or wherever,I stay home because I am sick of dealing with stupid and ignorant people.

Lots of people have no other choice but to stay home and save every nickel they can.

Diabled senior widow here...I can't afford to go out to eat, no fast food, cut my own hair, no newspapers, no cable t.v. ( I get 15 channels free with my antena I bought for 10.00$ ), cook and prep meals for freezer too, had 6 months " no spend" and have everything I need !! Also don,t have a car ( can't physically drive - so why bother !! ) Living the simple life and LOVING it !! 💗💗💗

30 years ago, my neighborhood was 100% home owners. Now it's fifty percent renters and the neighborhood is gone to shit !

I'm struggling to survive with $2000 a month. I share the rent with one of my relatives. I could go out to a restaurant or see a movie once in a while, but I just don't feel like leaving the house and dealing with people. I have a cashier job, and I deal with customers who have attitude problems or completely ignore me when I'm speaking to them (because they are smart phone zombies) for 8 hours a day. My job makes me hate people, and it seems like people have become even more annoying and insane since the pandemic. So if I get a day off, I just want to stay in the comfort of my home, eat a nice meal, and watch videos. I'd rather go to a restaurant and get some food to take home so I don't have to be around people who are loud and stupid.

I have always been a homebody. I love being at home.

Retired and been staying home most of the time since then.

Movies suck, saving money there, restaurants suck , saving money there, and people suck saving sanity there😅😂🤣

We’re retired. Can’t afford eating out or traveling. We stay at home. Thankfully, we have a garden that provides fresh and enough to put up for winter. Thankfully, I know how to cook.

There's nothing to buy. I'm a single guy in his late 30's, I make good money and pay cheap rent (7% of my gross income) to my friend who owns the place we live at (3br 3.5 bath. 2 of us live here). There's nothing I want to spend money on anymore, I've already gotten anything I wanted. Without a wife or kids, there's not much reason to go out and spend.

I sure do wish I had a time machine so I could go back to 1985. The malls were packed, the restaurants were packed, and you could get a job anywhere just by asking the manager for it point blank. Those were the Good Old Days... today its a desert wasteland with dry bones everywhere....

I’m about to just stay home too. Picked up my $14 bowl at Chipotle only to discover at home that i got someone else’s order. No time to drive back. Paying fast food workers more money apparently doesn’t equate to better service. It seems like the competence levels in society are continuing to trend in the wrong direction.

I don't think people don't want to work, they are just tired of never earning enough to get ahead. Bills constantly go up and your pay doesn't accommodate those changes. It frustrating and people are sick of it.

Dan, I am working from home in NYC and staying away from Manhattan and the subways. Not going to restaurants and will not order from Grub Hub, Door Dash or Uber Eats for fast food. Just watching how many of the 200,000 illegal economic migrants get FREE housing, food, healthcare and education from my tax dollars...

It's not fun to go out anymore Danno. Half the time, it's exhausting. I burn too much energy scoping my surroundings from the criminals and crazies. Then I look at the ATM, self-serve gas pump, self-serve checkout counter with total apprehension wondering if it's hacked. Staying home is the new Kool, assuming you have a home! People need to prep long term food storage .. canning season, take advantage of that.

Hey Dan I stop going out for to go food. Once a week I would treat myself to restaurant to go food. It use to be $13.50 and now $22 for the exact same thing. I know things cost more, the perceived value isn't the same at the new price.

I am staying home. My car seldome moves, I have to dust off the leaves and dust. I just can't afford it. I walked to Ralphs last sunday to buy three pieces of chicken breast. $25 for 3 pieces. I put it back and walked home and had a cup of noodles. Life is now about cup of noodles :-)

me and the old fella stay home except for puttering about town...we only use 1/4th tank a month of gasoline in our old truck. everything we have is old! our house,truck and us. we are doing ok during these times. we dont go on vacations. staying home rocks!! even our 21 yr old grandson told us he and his gf dont eat out. its too costly.we stay in and cook our food.

I canceled 2 VACATIONS THIS SUMMER FOR FULL REFUNDS. DO NOT GO OUT TO EAT AND MAKE EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH. GROW MY OWN HERBS, TOMATOES, GARLIC, ONIONS, AND LETTUCES. I would love to go on vacation, I cannot spend the money. I need to continue to save my money.

I can buy a family pack of chicken thighs for around $8 and grill them up and a 12 pack of beer for $15 and have a good time for a few days. Not $30 for a chicken entree at a restaurant and $10 for 1 beer.

The day was, everyone didn't go out all the time to eat. There weren't that many restaurants, either, and ones that were open were small - diners, cafes, takeout places. The food industry went to town and overbuilt the restaurant industry as people had money to blow. It worked, and for decades, they have enjoyed great profits overall. Now that every industry wants their share of this pie (the American Wallet Pie), restaurants are the luxury that no one can afford to indulge in every day or every week. I expect other luxuries, like cruise lines and other travel is down too, and tourist towns are probably feeling the pinch. But it's also things like dry cleaners, hair salons, nail salons, dog groomers, cleaning/maid services, landscaping, etc. The ripple effect is tremendous when people run out of money.

I have been saying this for years to my wife that on the main Street we have a restaurant every other building. I couldn't figure out how thay survive! And now it's all falling apart we have seen a restaurant a week close . I say it's high rent,help, insurance, supplies, inflation has killed them.

Instead of government being a servant for the people, it has become a tyrannical master that makes all facets of life more complicated and expensive. And I see no stopping the beast from getting worse.

I took my family out to dinner on Friday night. Restaurants were empty at 6 pm! Normally where we go everything is packed. Am I seeing things slow down? We could not believe that we could get in right away. Tables were empty around us. I am blown away by this. Then we walked around to walk off dinner. Well once again streets empty, bars half empty. People are holding onto their cash or they are tapped out.

Still doing fine, but feeling the inflation. I'm staying home and contributing to global climate change by growing a garden.

A few years ago a bag of groceries was around $ 25 & now it's $50. Dinner for 2 at a restaurant was $ 50. Now its $100.

I have to stay home since 2009 or the illegals will take my parking space. Of course,I could walk a mile down to the PATH station and be in Times Square in one hour or I could take the subway to JFK and fly anywhere in the world. But I cannot go into my car and go to the next town.

My husband went to Dairy Queen for three hotdogs and fries. When he got home and opened the bag, there was only one. My friend's daughter works there. She said it was a practice to get the orders wrong, knowing most people won't come back for the missing food. It will be our practice going forward to always check the bag before you leave. Even if customers behind you are honking the horn. Buyer beware, as we used to say. And no hotdog haters, please. I know how they're made. 😊

Eliminating eating out and taking expensive trips is something that people have done forever when they realize they can't keep up with that type of spending if they want to retire comfortably. There are just more important things to spend money on...like investments and debt elimination.

I was at a Chili’s in Winston Salem, NC Tuesday with a friend and the booth behind us paid the bill with cash and the waitress was taking our order. When she saw them leaving she said let me get you your change and they said we don’t need any. She looked at the bill and the money they left and it didn’t cover the bill so they were in a hurry to get out of there. I could not believe it. We had to voice for the waitress to the manager that they did stiff her on the bill. Unbelievable.

I live in the Washington, D.C. area. The restaurants are crowded and there is an 1/2 an hour wait even though the prices are sky high.

A lot of the items you buy in the grocery store have gone up 100% and not 3.3%,I just got back from the grocery store and seen a 12 pack of Coke for $9.99 a few years ago you could get a case for $10.

Dan, I live in Tampa, FL and a week ago I was running errands and passed an open, un-developed lot of land along Hwy 41 (N. Nebraska Ave). I pass this area frequently, but this was the first time I’d seen that land filled with new Tesla’s, stacked door-to-door. It completely stood out because the nearest new car dealership (including the Tesla dealer) is miles away. My partner randomly saw the same lot on a separate drive and sent me a text saying “Tesla can’t sell cars….they’re stacked up over here on Nebraska.” So you’re right. Dealerships are overstocked and trying to “hide” inventory.

Times are changing. Yesterday I noticed my grandson outside shooting baskets at a time when he is normally in his room chatting online or playing computer games. The golden age of restaurants, especially corporate fast food, is over. An economy is always enterprises coming and going. Right now, restaurants are among those going. In an economy like this one your best approach is to give up wanting. What is not wanted is never missed.

Yep if u own a business in the last about 2 years, the area I live in is considered economically disadvantaged, it was difficult to survive before,people are struggling here and have been for a long time. Even if you order food in,it’s expensive, AND THE QUALITY isn’t there cuz they’re having to buy less expensive supplies, I’d reduce my menu selection and keep it yummy and lower cost. I did it once cuz I was craving fish and it was an expensive treat. I’m 68 semi retired, run a 35 year old business that is getting stronger but I struggled like never before, if things slowed down it was for a day or two it bounced right back. Not now, it’s bad in NYS. The FREE FOOD thing led by local churches s mobbed, a church right next to my house is one that does this. Another church further down the street has a covered area with several refrigerators filled with food, and replenish nearly every day. My neighborhood is a good mix of older people who’ve lived here most of their lives, people who were recently released from prison or mandatory inpatient drug treatment and low income people like me. My car was repossessed by Honda, which is the nations top repossessor for cars, my payments were made but were late in the month due, first time wo a car in my whole life, so I’m feeling very segregated from all. My community is very difficult without a vehicle, very rural. Almost was evicted even paying majority of my rent on the first with rest paid trout the month. Rent is pretty high.

I do not wait for service at any restaurant when they tell me I have more than 15 minutes of waiting time. I hold them to their schedules and walk.

I live in Virginia and people spending money here we havent had many restaurant closures so business is doing well.

I have been looking at live street cameras in various tourist spots. Most of which are dead. But, those places show pictures on Facebook, which are old pictures to make it look busy.

It's too expensive to go out and eat. I live in California and my friend and I went out to eat and had two drinks each and a medium pizza, and a cheese cake and the bill was $67.58. That didn't include the tip. So it was about $77.00 to have an early evening meal for two people. That's ridiculous and I don't go out very much as a result. It's cheaper to eat at home and more healthy.

I had two restaurants in Las Vegas. Between the high costs of food, sky high rents and burdensome employees: You can't make it!! Just fuggetaboutit!

This will be the summer people will remember as the summer everyone stopped spending money and did things around the house. I myself have cut way back in "fun" things. Maybe all these woke voters will get the message and stop the destruction.

EV's time hasn't come yet, Dan. They're putting the cart before the horse. Before they have widespread adoption of EV's firstly they need to make them affordable for the general public. And at the same time harden the electrical infrastructure so that a million or more people plugging in their EV's at the same time to recharge them doesn't bring the whole grid down. They're a long, long way from making this happen.

I used to take a 1000 to 1500 dollar vacation every year. Not the last two years. I don't forsee a vacation in my future. I'm investing in my home and doing the work myself. Stocking up on food and maintenance stuff for my vehicles. I'm looking to pick up a new car for my work drive and give my daughter my old but still dependable work car. Beans bandages and bullets. Cash . Gold.Silver. I make good money, but it's not going to extras. Sad because I used to enjoy this world. Now I'm just trying to do my time.

In this resort town of Ocean City MD, charges $3 PER HOUR to park near the boardwalk. Rides are $3-$7 each, limiting children to only 2-3 rides each. And the FOOD! A hamburger and fries is over $20 and a SMALL ice cream cone is $7! IT IS ABSOLUTELY INSULTING! I’m sorry all these businesses are going to fail, but I either catch my own fish and crabs and buy fruits and vegetables in season by local farmers. I do not have a boat, but my dad has a dock on the bay, where I fish and crab. I just saw a sign that says it $120 for ONE DOZEN CRABS! Insane!

I live on the largest lake in New Mexico. There is no shortage of people coming here every weekend. They come from all of the surrounding states. On holidays we often have over 100 thousand here with their Big Trucks and Campers. No money? All I can say is........they must be living off of their credit cards........

Restaurants do not accept cash anymore. If I want to eat out, I go to the supermarket deli and buy a plate. Good food way less expensive that a resturant that you are supposed to have an app to order or pay with.

It is really ironic that "they" say people don't want to work... I would like to work but I am over 60 years of age and because of my age "they" will not hire me for even just a burger flipping job! Yet they can't find young people to fill those positions. Whoever "they" is - they are very selective about who they hire and they even have psychological tests you must take that evaluate employees by some artificial intelligence algorithm. These are very strange claims "they" make. Apparently , they do hire some of these people who cross over the border - many who are not American citizens and who often come from strange places like Bolivia but "they" will not hire Americans and especially not veterans. Something is very wrong with the country . If is as if they don't trust their own people ......Unions have no real power anyway...it is folly to think this way... Businesses just shut down and change their names but "they" -the people that run it- are the same people and their attitude of saying "no" has been shaped by our loony government for so long that I don't think this will change anytime soon.

We have friends who run their little deli just by themselves. Husband and wife. They work 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week. I come in every few weeks to do deep cleaning. I have my own business and thats what i can spare. I totally agree with your assessment. And this is a tourist destination.

We cut out A LOT of extras in our groceries, dining out only on special occassions, cut back on travel, etc, etc. Raising livestock, growing a garden, preserving food to save money on the grocery bill. Buckle up folks, its gonna only get worse!

Covid taught ME one thing: nobody is going to gift me food, utilities, or dog food. I worked every day (thanks to my Boss opening office in his house to avoid the Karens) and earned my keep. Of course, every year the money would run out earlier before the month ended. Same for my Boss.

21:00 I have been working from home for well over 10 years and my employer caught on to that mouse moving thing a long time ago. Our supervisors now have a timestamped report of all the records we update so moving the mouse does not work for us anymore lol.

Michigan here- not only getting fewer choices to eat at but a big problem is quality…retired and just ate out yesterday at a family restaurant that has been around for years however the quality of food was awful. It is a buffet. The pirogies were the frozen ones- no longer the homemade. The meatballs were tasteless. The chicken- well a couple of us weren’t sure it was chicken as it looked like a hunk of pork😳 The fish was mushy🤦‍♀️. The lettuce was questionable and the toppings looked like a visit to ER with food poisoning🤦‍♀️. Never eating there again. So sad as this place was a Michigan legend. This is not the only place we have been disappointed in lately so my home cooking really isn’t all that bad anymore 😉-Linda S.

Same story with our favorite Italian restaurant here in Idaho. Only certain sections of the dining room are open depending on wait staff availability. We have figured out when to arrive in order to secure our favorite seating area.
