People are still living in FEMA's toxic trailers

Ten years ago Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tore into the Gulf Coast and displaced over a million residents. For many of these people, trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency became their homes.
But many of the new occupants soon found it hard to breathe, suffering flulike symptoms, stinging eyes, and nosebleeds. The culprit was formaldehyde, which emanated from the hastily assembled, substandard materials used to make the trailers. The toxic FEMA trailers became an embarrassment to the agency and, in the eyes of many, emblematic of the government’s mismanaged response to the disaster.
A decade after the storms Distillations followed CHF researcher and medical anthropologist Nicholas Shapiro as he went searching for the remaining FEMA trailers. His search took him to the oil fields of North Dakota, where a different kind of housing crisis is taking place.

Imagine having some stranger show up at what is probably the only home you could afford, and scare the hell out of you, with some "facts" that are questionable, at best. At the time of this video (and, possibly to current date), no actual death or serious illness was every fully proven to be linked to the trailers. The Government issued a settlement in 2012, but that was to stop and prevent continuous litigation ... not an admission of guilt.

It really shouldn't baffle you. The government likes to pretend they care about people, but they really don't. If they sincerely cared, we would have a functioning public healthcare system, strict environmental protection laws, frequent inspections on industrial manufacturing/power plants, and most of all, a government that does things for the good of the common people, not so the rich can line their own pockets at everyone else's expense. The US government cares about how quickly they can make money, and will work towards that goal at all costs.

Oh the USA minimum wage is an absolute disgrace. $7.25 per hour? In Australia it's $12.60 USD per hour (full time) or $16USD per hour if you're casual. Why don't you pay people a living wage? It's crazy! You have a 'working poor'! All you gotta do is legislate it. Business adapts, they always whinge and moan, and threaten layoffs, then carry on regardless once the laws change.

The trailors have some value to those who cant afford better, and certainly helped with the immediate need for shelter after the huricane that displaced millions of people. Shelters are neither free cheap or quick to build. Buildup of toxic levels of formaldehyde can be mitigated with plants, venting air, and activated carbon air filtration that works very well in a small space like these trailors. Excessive amounts of formaldehyde is not a problem in just FEMA trailors. Excessive amounts can be found in cigaret smoke, pratically all newly painted surfaces, new cabinetry, carpets, new furneture, and almost everything newly made . Your initial comment alludes to the real problem. That many people are unaware of that longterm exposure to excessive amounts of formaldehyde can cause health problems. They are unaware of where it might come from, and unaware of how to mitigate it. Certainly formeldehide is a problem, but it is a byproduct of a lot of manufacturing, and is not going away anytime soon. This makes education on it and how to mitigate it more important than to slam the government for providing these shelters, or for selling them when they were done with them. What is and was needed reguarding the tailors is education on formeldahide, what has lots of formeldahide, and how to mitigate it in your living enviroment.

@EddieLeal 2 года назад
Formaldehyde has never been banned from the manufacture of mobile homes. But the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which has jurisdiction over mobile home construction, began setting standards for the levels of formaldehyde used in their construction back in 1985. The current maximum level allowed in plywood is 0.2 ppm (parts per million), and for particleboard it’s 0.3 ppm. The EPA also recently set lower standards for all plywood and particleboard products that overrides the HUD standards. That said, there is no known HUD standard for the maximum allowed level of formaldehyde gas in the air in a new home. Because so many products, including cabinets and new furniture, combine with the construction materials to off-gas formaldehyde during the first few months after a home is constructed.

@@culley8841 they were set to come home about a month or so after Katrina hit New Orleans, so they had officially turned everything over to the unit that was coming in to take their place, so yes they did pull the entire unit out of Iraq month early because they were technically sitting around doing nothing at that point and the units that had been sent here to New Orleans to do patrols were doing nothing but stealing stuff, like all the Bourbon Street, street signs, other landmarks like things that were from the 84' World's Fair that was held here, and other things that could never be replaced. They brought the units from here home because these guys were trained in patrolling the city durning and after hurricanes and since they were all from here, they had no desire to steal from the city. I have absolutely no reason to make this up, there is an article even explaining it and what all was done in the Army Times from that time period, I just tried pulling it up to post the link, but since I dont have a subscription to it, they arent allowing me to pull the article up. Try looking up "256th Infantry Brigade brought home from Iraq early in 2005 to aid in the patrolling of the city of New Orleans due to looting and loss of New Orleans police officers." 256th Infantry Brigade the entire brigade, but the actual unit that is specifically from here in New Orleans is the 1-141 Field Artillery, and the task force that lasted for 3 years consisting of soldiers from all over the state of Louisiana that were assisting in the recovery and aiding the NOPD in patrolling the city was called Task Force Gator, you can read all about it and see none of it was made up. I mean what the fuck do I gain out of making that up? I also bet you dont have the balls to tell me or my husband that to either of our faces if you werent there behind the safety of your keyboard and computer screen. Unless you know 100% for sure about something, dont call someone a liar. Trust me, I wish my husband wouldve been able to come home get his 6 weeks leave and then go back to normal duty, but we werent that lucky, they were brought home, got 5 days off and then had to report right back to duty to take over for the units from out of state. I almost died in a 2021 Winnebago Travato GL van due to the toxic materials used in it. The dealer sold it to me knowing that I am particularly chemically reactive. I have been trying to air it out but there has been no change. I called the EPA and they told me that there is a warning on their site warning people of the toxicity of RVs which are not monitored and unregulated. I called Winnebago and they told me that there is a waver and a warning about the dangerous chemicals inf their RVs in the owner's manual but one cannot see an owners manual unless they purchase one! No attorney will help me either. The DMV told me not to register it or pay the sales tax and to send it right back to the dealer that that said too bad lady!

Have you seen that news report where the tv news presenter asked this homeless guy who was living on the street why he didn't go into a shelter due to a natural disaster (I forgot which disaster it was) so then this homeless guy responds and says that Salvation Army were caught killing people in the shelters. The news presenter ignores the man and changes the subject. Then there is footage of these fema shelters with barley anyone in them and all the beds haven't been touched. I always get bad vibes with Fema. If I was in a natural disaster I would definitely avoid Fema at all cost. The amount of times they screw up makes it seem like they want people killed.

This is because the US government outsources emergency aid to private companies, giving them federal funds to use how they see fit. Turns out it isn't just Fema trailers but all trailers carry some level of toxicity due to the materials used. They aren't made to be lived in permanently. There are eco friendly trailers but those cost around 40-50 g's per unit. More than double the cost of the trailers purchased by fema which all suffer the same problem to a degree.
@fastlyane2
@fastlyane2 8 лет назад
Agreed. I found that if it was that much a problem then a class action law suit with all manufacturers making campers and new cars for toxicity, everyone who has a camper would have to be paid out irrespective to it being after or before 2006. But the MOLD part is Always a NO GO. Spores, Fungus is never a livable situation. And, if your in a 230k motorhome and you have that smell, then that means its "new" and if you can't stand it, GO RENT AN APT. and get the smell of something used for yrs, with sweat. Not enough research was done for this video. :(

I think the government acted accordingly in the response to "temporary" housing. Not their fault people decided to live in them either knowingly or unknowingly. I know it isn't fair to those clueless but that is the nature of life. It happens but this also a reminder to follow warnings. Especially the ones posted on all the trailers no less. I also got to agree with M. Howard on the fact the case would have to be against all manufacturers. This shouldn't be unfairly put on the government when it was known from the beginning to be a temporary solution. But an important thing in this video has been addressed. Trailer safety. Stricter guidelines should be put in place for all manufacturers in what materials can and cannot go into their products. Next video lol

Ok? So what? Do we just NOT give them trailers? Why do people make such a huge fuss over issues that are irrelevant? Those people better thank god and FEMA everyday that they got a free trailer. It was NEVER MEANT to be permanent! Did they expect a new 100k home too? At least they got a roof over their head! In most countries you'd be lucky to get given a tent..... people are complacent, they had a livable situation and noting to get back to, its not the federal government faults they decided to permanently live in TEMPORARY TRAVEL TRAILERS.
@shellyhebert4377
@shellyhebert4377 7 лет назад
Hm....what I'm reading here is people who either never had no choice to live in these trailers, never experienced being without a home or any other place to go. I'm a Hurricane Katrina survivor who's home was flooded up to the roof, vast majority of other homes damaged and unlivable as well, ALL apartment were either fully rented out or unlivable, ALL hotels and Motels were fully occupied or unlivable. People had no choice but to take these trailers, or as some were forced to do because of whatever reason FEMA's decision was, forced to live in tents under bridges like your everyday run of the mill homeless person. Believe me, no one really wanted to these trailers from the beginning but people just had no choice. Yes. Theses trailers were meant to be temporary housing until you can find a more suitable place - sure if only it was that simple. Many, many people fell pray to scammers - paying "contractors" to rebuild their homes but them only NEVER show to do the job, plus new building laws were pasted so therefore delaying the rebuilding process and on top of that made rebuilding or repairing your home costly more money of which many didn't have, oh and then there was the countless greedy "house flippers" from all over the country that came to Louisiana (and Mississippi) and try selling properties 3, 4, 5x's more then they were really worth - of which MANY of these properties are still on the market today, some are even being used for an advantage for the occasional squatters because many of these properties are empty with "For Sale" signs in the front lawns. Apartments jacked their rental rates up as much as 3 times then what the were charging BEFORE Katerina again placing the financial borden on people - look if there was a way to pull some $$$ out of my ass I would and I'm sure many others felt this way. People had no choice nor no where to go but remain in these trailers - even after it became known of the health risk involved remaining in them. I lived in one, a 32 ft Cavalier. Shortly I begun having respiratory problems. My coughing spells because so serve that there were times I would physically pass out. Noticing my coughing subsided after being away from my trailer for long lengths of times I begun staying in my trailer less and less, staying with friends instead. And yes I filed a claim with the case action suit about the trailers and you wanna know the BIG settlement I got? My cut was $186! Even though I had been to the ER twice, payed nearly $1100 in medicine, and doctors appointments on top of that. That's why today I'm telling people who have been effected from Hurricane Harvey to avoid FEMA. But the point is - we weren't looking for free handouts from taxpayers (some were, yes) but most weren't and just did not have a choice in the matter to take what was offered to them.

Did you even watch the video? Sure you get $18 an hour for being a cashier, but it's over $1200/month rent just for a piece of shit toxic trailer.

I do believe those trailers are even up in Canada don't know if they have the same issues but they are here I know this because we almost bought one several years ago. When issues are first discovered they should have been destroyed.

Yes, unfortunately Palm Harbor (reputed to be a better model) mobile homes have formaldehyde. I've lived in one for 22 years, raised a family in the country on $9.50/hr and a $430.00 mtg. WITHOUT gov't assistance. I was able to get a *30* yr mtg, which was unheard of, but it cut my mo payments in half. Not everything is doom and gloom. Americans have choices. If I had to, I would leave everything and start over, indeed, I have.

+Teresa Oleary I believe it works safely when production is done in a decent time frame and the supplies aren't cheap (i.e. the chemicals are aired out and not contained within the structure due to speedy production), however, as with anything else, when there's a way to cut costs and boost sales, health concerns are thrown out the window.
