The only way to stop that brake problem is if you upgrade the calipers and sometimes that shits expensive extremely expensive and sometimes you might have to upgrade the wheel size because of the upgraded brake calibers because they’ll rub the inside of the dang wheel you can’t win And what else is a horrible design on them cars is if you put a bigger wheel on it you have to get a lower profile tire because of the independent suspension on the front because part of the strut sticks out and if you hit a hard no from the wheel will bottom out on it so you can’t win with some of these new cars or some of these car models

I have a 17 year old 4 cylinder Camry Solara. All I've done to it are oil changes, coolant flush, brakes and rotors and valve cover gasket. That's it. In 17 years my neighbor has had 5-6 Mercedes and BMWs. Several times I've seen one of them leave or return to his house on a tow truck. Last I heard him say he will be taking out a loan to send his kid to college. Driving my Toyota for 17 years I managed to save enough money for my son to go to college. Debt free. Old Toyotas rock.

I'm in the same boat as you. 2011 Prius with no payments for years. Invested car payment+ and will be sending daughter to college debt free. My next door neighbor (brother in law) has had two Audi's, a Lexus he couldn't afford, an Altima, and now a Kia. High car payments for over a decade. He took his Audi in for an oil change and the dealership somehow broke his fuel injection. The gave him a loaner and he was satisfied. I was like dude your car is in the shop more than it's in the driveway.

They're not performance or nimble cars. They're more like cruisers. They're one of Toyota's most reliable models and they're American made, not Japan. Bought a brand new 92 500 E and changed the evaporator twice within three years, once on warranty second time was on me. Then four years on, had to change the entire wire harness as the protective wrapping surrounding the core literally dried up and wiring was exposed as the coating chaffed. Also from day one the seats were the worst and after an hour and a half of travel, I used to have to take a break cause my back and sciatic nerve acted up. Ended up springing for a front set of Recaros that let allowed me to drive at least a full gas tank between breaks. Fun car but room for improvement? Oh yes!

"The most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Mercedes".. Scotty is right on with this video....I owned a 1988 560 SEC for 10 years or so. Even as old as it was and the last of the hand built 126 chassis, it was still the typical Mercedes-- pain to maintain--which I did by myself--and over engineered...It ate brakes, rotors, tires, a very intense maintenance schedule, electrical problems, vacuum issues, exhaust, suspension...etc...But when it was running well it was beast. I loved driving it, but sold it because I was tried of working on it. Don't buy a used Mercedes unless you can work on it or have a deep wallet.

They have all the fancy lounges and spoils you with fresh bake donuts and hot coffee or hot chocolate while putting a hole in your pocket while your car is in the shop. The cars on the 80’s are better much more durable than 90’s and 20’s. Those pre program ECM’s/ECU’s bound to put a gremlin in your car before the warranty is up. :(

Every car manufacturer has had its problems. That includes Toyota. From terrible oil consumption in their 4 and 6 cylinders in the mid 2000s to terrible brakes. Mercedes has made some terrible engines as well. The stats don't lie. Toyota holds the best score in reliability as of now and has had it for over a decade. Reason for that is simple, Toyota makes them simpler. Mercedes is at the top when it comes to technology and so, some problems come with innovation. Having said that, I own a 2010 Mercedes E350 since new. Yes, with the crappy M272 motor. It has 228,000 miles and counting. Bought it after Mercedes fixed the bugs in 06-08. Zero oil leaks. Best car I have ever owned. Extremely reliable. Have bought 2 Lexuses for my wife. I have not seen a Toyota yet last as long as a Merc. Great vehicles, but in no way, shape or form, do they come close to driving like a Merc. The build quality and attention to detail cannot be compared. No offense. Brakes, double hood latches, hood extending to 90 degrees, the geometry of the suspension and layout of the engine compartment. There is no comparison.

About the brake rotors,if you ever worked on them before,it was designed that way,the outer layer's material is different and isn't suppose to be touched by the pads,while the inside is completely steel,and another thing,you don't need to replace the disc everytime you change the pads,you only change them after you changed the pads 2 to 3 times before like any car,and the gap makes it super easy to know if you need replacing them,just feel the gap with your fingers,or just look at them,when the brake discsbare worn they tend to have multiple grooves in the steel layer,so scotty,ask other mechanics to fact check your stuff

The first engine went 293 k miles. I had it rebuilt and it only went 220 k miles. The trans went 250, needed a $600 refresh and went the next 250 without anymore work. If it hadn't started to rust I might have been tempted to rebuild the engine again. The thing that really bugged me about it was that it positively ate water pumps. I think I put 6 in it. Still, even though it was a slug, especially in the summer (only 95 hp on a "standard day" 59*f at sea level), I'd buy another, any day of the week, if I could find one in new condition for the equivalent of what I paid back then.

I've owned two S-500's (1999 and 2004) and a CLS-55 (2004) so far and every single one has failed me big time over the years. Every day a new error code. These things just fall apart after max 10 years. At the same time my neighbor with a Mazda 6 never has problems, it just works and works. I must admit that after getting rekt so many times with Mercedes which I used to love so much, I strongly dislike them now and actually bought a 200 euro Honda as an everyday car, which I absolutely love as there are much less problems and I can really say that I trust more than any Mercedes I've seen so far. The batteries on the Mercs are also a disaster. I have a rule of thumb which says that never take a Mercedes out from the dealership without demanding a new battery. Two out of three in my case had a dead battery which failed on the first day after purchase. My friend bought a 2019 S-500 and same problem! He drove it home, tried to drive after a few hours - battery dead. And the frigging ball joints. These cars are made 80% of just ball joints. I drive less than 18k km every year, so not even so much. But every damn year my car gets caught up at the roadworthiness check because of a loose ball joint and gets a fail. Now four years in a row, same problem. The ball joints must be made of plastic it seems. This ball joint problem has driven me on the virge of madness sometimes. My father's 1984 Volvo 240 never ever since he bought it new in 1984 has needed a new ball joint. My Mercedes needs at least one every year. The amount of WTF I've had with these cars is unbelievable. Some people are lucky and have no problems ever, I seem to be one of the unlucky ones and have these cars fall apart on me at every turn. If one day I get lucky and get to sell the CLS-55 disaster - never again Mercedes... never again. I let myself get rekt only so many times until I wise up.

I am not a Mercedes guy, but I have known a few people who owned the old 70's-80's turbo diesels and those things were tanks. That was probably the high water mark for Mercedes reliability. They could easily reach 500k with proper care. The interiors were not gaudy and full of buttons and flashing lights. The leather seats were well made and there were no rattles and there was much less plastic under the hood. Repairs/parts were still incredibly expensive, but they were fairly reliable and did not need to go into the shop often. However they took their sweet time to go from 0-60mph.

I've owned two Mercedes cars - both were money pits. The first was a 1958 220S I shared with my older brother when we were in high school and college - it was always in the shop and when it needed a valve job at around 80K miles, we finally got rid of it. Yes, it had leather seats, wood trim, and a gorgeous paint job, but mechanically it was a piece of junk. Years later my wife got a 1985 Mercedes 190E as a hand-me-down from her sister - again, a beautiful car with lots of power that was a pleasure to drive but every time we took it in for repairs the bill was well over $1K. I said her, "This car may have been free, but it's putting us in the poor house!" And the attitude of the dealer was interesting, to say the least - they seemed to believe that you ought to be GLAD to spend thousands per year maintaining your Mercedes Benz, because OTHER PEOPLE COULDN'T AFFORD IT! (ha ha ha - photo of grinning horse, etc...), so it discouraged the "wrong type" of people from even owning used ones and bringing down the standard. So, basically, the car is for idiots who only care about status - if they wanted a high-quality, comfortable, feature-packed luxury car they would have bought a Lexus, but, apparently, that brand doesn't say "Money" as much as a Mercedes. Ha!

So check it and fix it ASAP! A/C mold! Clean the system and make sure the drain/breathing pipe under the car is not obstructed! Usually get clogged with road debris the resulting moist accumulation, along with lack of air circulation does the rest! Driving in muddy/dirty conditions is usually the first precursor for clogging it! Make sure to have the A/C filter replaced as needed. Explain the context of this video then - which demonstrates Mercedes-Benz in the last 22 years are the embodiment of unreliability??

I have a 2014 E350 Coupe with 117k miles and not a single problem with maintaining routine maintenance. But something to think about when looking at the costs of all these electronic related parts is to think about the future of the automotive industry as a whole. I can't imagine what repair costs are going to run on domestic or foreign EV's. With EV batteries being far the worse when something happens to them out of warranty.

Hey!!! I got the same car recently mine has 105k miles. I got it for a decent price! (At least around here) car is clean 100% had it inspected by a mechanic (whos my brother lol) how is yours holding up????

@@easycash1368 I now have 125,000 miles on it and still running without any issues. Just came back from a 2200 mile round trip averaging about 30mpg on the highway. Just change the oil every 5k miles minimum. Mercedes recommends 10k but I do between 3k and 5k and transmission every 20k. Right now I think the only thing I have due is replacing spark plugs and possibly coils. Just preventive maintenance.

honestly, Mercedes are pretty mechanically sound. it's the electronics that hinder them. especially in the older cars. I have an 03 c240 and it's been a wonderful car. drives well, always ran really well and has never left me stranded. and I've even taken it on several multi-day road trips and it was great. the only issue I have with it is some minor electrical problems. like I have a fuse that goes out every once in a while which makes it so I can't adjust my seat or open my sunroof. I just pop a new one and it's fine. other than that, I love the car and will drive it for as long as I can. I'd put a new motor in it if it needed it. and I only paid 2k for it. and I bought it with 115k miles on it. it now has 220k and going strong.

Mine is a 01 C240 and it does have electrical problems but mechanically it's a dream. 408 000 km (about 250k miles?) and I intend to keep it until the end. Best driving experience I ever had.

I would not blame the Alabama Boy's for shotty workmanship it's comes down to engineering. If the design is poor so too will be the build. Now if it's assembled wrong then yea blame those who assembled it in the first place. Honestly the cost of ownership with Mercedes is way too high even on a good day.

WOW. What a nightmare at 21,000 miles. I'll just buy 20 2010 Honda Civic for $120,000; sell 18 of them for a profit of $18,000 and drive free cars with the last 2 for 300,000 miles.

You dont want to drive a civic for 300k miles. Just buy an old MB instead. If you cant afford an expensive car. That's what I do.

I have had an e46, z3, 08 mustang GT, and now a w204 C350. I like everything. From my own personal experience, it’s all these stupid sensors and random things that decide to break. Tired of everything being over engineered. Though with my health issues, it’s a price I’m willing to pay for comfort. Anything can be junk, but not everything can be comfortable. Rock on Scotty, you are great, keep them coming!

it would be nice if Mercedes reintroduced the old 1970's sl roadsters concentrating on mechanical perfection and comfort with almost no electronics. It would be a new selling point, electronic headache free. most people have all the electronics they want in their phone.

Like any manufacturer, it depends on the year and model. My wife’s 10 year old C250 with 100k on the clock is the most reliable car we’ve ever owned. My 2018 mustang had way more issues. It’s never thrown a CEL, never had a single issue.

Dude, my wife has been driving in a similar CLS 55 for the best part of the last 6 years. Certainly, it is a very complex car because it is loaded with technology, but it is one of the most reliable cars we have ever had. The parts are not as expensive as you are describing because you don't have to buy the parts from the dealership. The computer modules (who rarely go bad on these cars BTW) are widely available 2nd hand. The suspension struts almost never need to be replaced entirely, only the upper part containing the rubber bag gets old with time, and replacing it costs 200-300 dollars per piece. I've done them 80000 miles ago, and the car still runs like a charm. 25 problems in the scans are not at all indicative of the reliability of the car because the CLS in perticular has systems monotoring thousands of little parameters that do not all need to be working 100% of the time. These parameters are only visible on the scanners to enable the repair shop an easy and complete diagnostic of the real problem. My STAR-diag shows 108 problems with the CLS on my wife but the car runs smoothly with a hitch! The disks DO NOT make any sound when you change the pads. I have changed the pads once already without any issues. When the ridge on the disk become so visible it means the disks have become too thin and need to be replaced. All-in-all, such cars cost more to repair and maintain only because of the complexity of their mechanical systems that requires more laboour hours. If you cannot afford to drive in such cars then you can simply stick with simple japanese cars but they are not even close to the ride comfort and pleasure that the Mercedes delivers, even when you compare the cls 500 to the LS 450. As for the new car you showed, I am almost sure it is a factory problem. The quality of Mercedes built in the US is known to be remarkably lower than their German counterparts.

In Australia I bought locally made front & rear pads and discs for $360 all up. That's all so far in 30,000km of owning my CLS. All up 190,000 trouble free...

What's the point of adding hundreds of monitors/sensors on things that do not need to ve working 100% all the time? That's the junk that makes these money pits cost too much on the shop floor and too much to repair too. These things are designed to fail and lead high cost labour to repair/replace.
@MrPhymed
@MrPhymed 2 года назад
@@davesoldit2587 As I explained: they make the diagnosis much easier. If you’ve ever worked with a STAR-diag you would understand. And, NO, the costs are not as high as you’d think (given you steer off the dealership). They do not break down as frequently as you’d think (talking from a family of Mercedes owners). They are extremely reliable machines if you do the routine maintaince properly. My dad has a Mercedes S550 with more than 800.000 miles, yes 800 thousands miles on the odometer and it has zero issues. It does not consume or leak a single drop of oil. It costs him 6-700$ a year for maintenance and regulars.

@-.__.__.-Rad 2 года назад
@@MrPhymed My take is... When you're the second - third owner, chances are that car, even if it was maintained, it could've been redlined a few times per day. Where as if you take care of it it from the get-go, it won't break
@MrPhymed
@MrPhymed 2 года назад
@@-.__.__.-Rad Buying a new car from the dealer is the worst financial thing you can do. A very well maintained car with a transparent history is always a better option. No one is their right mind would redline and abuse their car many times per day if they are regularly paying for maintaining it. Unless it is a completion sports car ;)
