Theater is perhaps the oldest form of therapy: we take our conflicts and traumas, and reenact them in a safe environment. The ancients spoke of _catharsis_ in drama, the purging and purification of our desires and fears: that is still true in the best plays.

Well, when you talk about mental health directly it almost implies that there’s something wrong with people’s heads. When you talk about an outlet and a way of life, it implies that we need to facilitate a healthy environment, which is a better focus. I think.

It was one of the great privileges of my life to see Adam Driver on Broadway in BURN THIS 3x. His love for his craft, while evident in his films, shines most brightly on the stage, and he was enthralling and captivating. The fact that he wants to foster that same love in the very people nobody ever thinks about when considering the demographic for the theater arts is just one reason why Adam Driver is, as Martin Scorsese called him, "one of the finest, if not THE finest, of his generation."

Adam brought me to tears. In the 70's, I used to teach GI's stationed in Germany who hadn't finished high school. I am an English teacher but there I taught history and political science. I have relatives in what was then Czechoslovakia. My guys had no idea what they were protecting when they went on watch over the border, or why Russian soldiers were on the other side looking at them, or how the lives of the Czechs were so curtailed by the Russian presence. Civilians with interest and heart, exactly like this thing that Jon and Adam did is real life. They were all about going back to "the World." I tried in my small way, not as powerful as Jon Batiste and Adam Driver, to bring the troops exactly the same thing. It also is a unifying force to bring all people of the Real World together. Both of these people are absolutely brilliant.

I taught in the inner city in Minneapolis before I went to Germany. It was perfect preparation because most of these men had been there in some city and were truly ready to learn how to move forward in their lives. I never felt more appreciated as a teacher. I have lived in Berlin for 31 years and taught here for 22 of the 40 years.
