Vegetarian food is nowhere near as bad as people make out. Some products are lovely. I love the chicken nuggets and Southern fried ones. But I know it isn't to everyone's taste.

Vegetarian substitutes are really starchy and dry, and sometimes overcompensate on the spices. They're not easy to switch to if you're used to regular meat

It just depends what brand you buy. Some are great but many are horrid. I had to do a lot of trial and error before I found some I liked.

+FoxyWhite it depends on whether you are incorporating them into a cooked meal or not. Making a little olive oil pasta dish and adding the faux meat on top is lovely. The faux fish is the same with tartar sauce and the faux chicken nuggets are incredible with BBQ sauce.

Really like the Irish crew who do these - makes me want to visit Ireland. Life shouldn't be treated as a product and Being Vegan isn't hard. These products are not necessary for a healthy whole foods plant diet and are more for people transitioning from the habits of exploiting others. I've personally been to slaughterhouses and they are not nice places. Imagine being the animal. If everyone tried being Vegan for a month and did a little research on what and how much to eat for them the world would be a better place.

I developed my own, very simple recipe for fakon -- fake bacon -- which my meat-eating friends say tastes like very lean bacon. Take extra-firm tofu and slice it as thinly as you can; paper-thin is best. The thinner you can get it, the better it will taste. Combine one part soy sauce to two parts tamarind-based steak sauce into a marinade. Add a few drops of liquid smoke. Pour the marinade into a cookie sheet , then lay your tofu strips out in it. Leave it overnight in the fridge. The next day, fry up the strips in the oil of your choice and whatever remains of the marinade until crisp. You'll swear you're eating real bacon. Enjoy!

+Terri Cunnison Tofu itself has a very bland, neutral flavour. It's not entirely flavourless, but the main benefit of tofu is that it will soak up whatever you put it in and adopt that flavour. The next time you make chili, try substituting the hamburger with crumbled, extra-firm tofu and you'll see what I mean.

I've tried Tofu before, quite a few times. However, regardless of which tofu it was, I couldn't get past the texture. The texture was always unpleasant.

+monmaker Tofu has a very wide range of textures, from the pudding texture of silken tofu to the meaty texture of extra-firm. But if it's the texture which turns you off, have you tried TVP or seiten? TVP, textured vegetable protein, has a texture so identical to meat that food companies have been using it for decades to stretch hamburger. Have you ever had "salisbury steak"? It's mostly TVP. Seiten is wheat dough with all the sugar washed out, leaving only the protein structure. It has the _exact_ texture of meat, right down to the gristle. If you want a non-meat product which is guaranteed to have a texture you'll like, try seiten. Just remember, all of this stuff -- tofu, TVP, seiten -- has almost no flavour of its own. It will absorb the flavours of whatever you put it in.

There are alot of reasons not to eat meat, some people can't process muscle tissue and require a almost no meat diet, because the people that can't eat muscle tissue can eat fish usually, I eat meat do not get me wrong but it is a choice man, just like it's a choice for you to eat meat.

If you couldn't hunt animals you couldn't eat meat, we adapted to be omnivores eating whatever we could get our hands on to live the next day, we are not like that today we have choice and abundance, don't be stuck up on preconceived notions my friend, also meat might be a good source of protien, B-Vitamins, zinc, iron, and lipoic acid (and the liver contains huge amounts of Vitamin D if you eat it) but there are plenty of other foods that can provide that exact thing. You should not discriminate because of what someone eats is what im saying, now if a vegan constantly tells you they are a vegan and thinks themselves superior for it then dislike them as a person for their attitude, not their group and their food choices.

A lot of meat substitutes can be an acquired taste, so kudos to you guys for giving them a go. You should have tried the Quorn Roast - once that's cooked and sliced, it's a lot like roast turkey breast. The Quorn mince is good too in pasta dishes and cottage pie. And there's an Israeli company that makes an authentic looking and tasting hot dog sausage and something called Meatless Streaky Strips that when fried are as near as damnit like crispy bacon rashers. Quorn have even started making their own vegan range as well.

i think the texture freaks me out more than anything. i used to eat from the vegetarian/vegan station a lot at my college (our regular food was gross and the v/v station was made to order) and while everything was really flavorful the chicken had a texture like sawdust.

C*Stereo which meat texture each has a lil different. I don t like sausage cause the texture and reason I don t like the texture of hard/medium tofu they very similar. Never tried soft. Also many substitutions of meat have that yucky texture. Steak, chicken, and fish are very different.

This is one of the most honest videos about "vegan substitutes" I have seen. Irish people are intensely honest. Chicken is the easiest meat to fake, hands down. But I debate on the burger, as they tried for years to pull the "50/50" with the crumbled meat toppings at Pizza Hut, but customers could tell there was WAY MORE than 50% of "textured vegetable protein" in them.

Alastair Ward well, for me personally I love how meat tastes but I don't agree with eating it on ethical grounds, so meat substitutes are a way to get the tastes and textures I like without causing any harm to animals.

Alastair Ward I also thought like that before I went vegetarian. While I like to use more veg than before, substitutes are good for a couple of reasons: 1) that satisfy cravings that veggies can't. 2) they make it easier to eat with others. i have substitutes that my husband will eat so we can eat food he likes but in a form i am comfortable with :) same for eating at peoples houses. classic example: Aussie BBQ. simply must have a sausage to chuck on the barbie :)

Something else to add to this thread that most people don't think about -- There are some people who are actually allergic to certain meat products. So having a vegan version of those same products allows them to expand their diet & feel included when others are eating meat.

Alastair Ward I dated a vegetarian for a while and we tried to spice up our meals. Eating a fuckin' salad for breakfast was a bummer so the meatless sausage patties were a blessing. I started to get used to it but then she realized she could do better than me. Seriously, some products were just fine, but many, many products were just horrible. I do see the point of offering flavor variety for peeps who don't look forward to spending the rest of their lives eating eggplant.

People who turn plant-based because of health reasons obviously don't eat this stuff and know that they're not very good for you...

Some do, some don't. I personally don't eat them very often, because I don't need them. I used to eat them all the time when I first gave up meat though, because I was still learning how to cook things like tofu. That and I am a recovering junk food addict.

Caitlin Robinson Yeah I just never could get used to the fermented Tofus. A big old marinated and grilled portabella mushroom caps is a joy to the taste buds though. Sooo yum! I happily sub those out for meat and I'm not vegetarian.

annette fournier I love mushrooms! I never make them like that, but I have had it, and it's so good. I had to learn how to do a good job with tofu. It has taken a lot of trail and errot, but tofu may be an acquired taste, but it's not for everyone. Then again, I prefer tempeh in terms of fermented soy products. IEspecially when I lightly fry it in olive oil. And it tastes good with mushrooms.

Some balsamic vinegar,olive oil,soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce, garlic, onion diced, or green onions, herbs de Provence and fresh rosemary. Put in in a large gallon zip lock bag and put in the mushroom caps. Put in the fridge and turn them every few hours. Leave them sit overnight or up to a couple days. Baste them with the marinade once while cooking. On the grill 4-6 min per side depending how thick they are. I lightly toasted a soft bun and garnish like a burger. The possibilities are endless.😀

I don't know if you have it in Ireland or not, but here in the U.S. there's a vegan brand called Gardein, and they make breaded chipotle lime "chicken fingers" that rock my socks off. I could eat them every day until I died and never get sick of them. lol

The "chicken" nuggets are my favourite quorn product! Mostly I just buy them. Or sometimes the mince because once it's in sauce it's good. I buy the sausages, but I can't explain why I like those, it makes no sense, they don't taste anything like meat sausages (but I'm not always a fan of those anyway). You know the thing I think about meat substitutes is that why do they have to taste like meat? But then I grew up vegetarian and eating Nutmeat (Sanitarium Healthfood Company product)( and it tasted mostly of peanuts and that was fine with me - I got peanut-flavoured protein loaf. I eat meat now, but I still like Nutmeat and other substitutes, especially when they *don't* try to imitate meat all that closely. Love that peanutty loaf.

While living in Australia I went to a fast-food restaurant near my apartment, called Lord of the Fries. Took me a month to realise their entire menu is vegetarian. Their cheeseburgers are spot on.

Just watched the Irish People Eat South African Food video, I think you need to follow up with some South African snacks like biltong, rusks (with tea or coffee), "pap en sous" aka pap and sauce, vetkoek, oh and koeksisters maybe :) (as far as food goes, you missed a very important South African food, which is braai meat - steak and chops for example, the boerewors was close though).

The hardest thing to get right with meatless things is the texture. Lightlife does make great sandwich "meats".

I could never give up the taste & texture of meat all together but I'd definitely consider substituting more "vegi-meats" into my diet if they weren't so expensive. If they could make meat substitutes that were similar in price to real meat more people would probably at LEAST cut down on the amount of meat they eat. Not even for moral reasons but for health reasons particularly for our aging population.

I've been a vegetarian since 1976, and a lot has changed; there are so many meatless options now. The problem is, with most meat eaters who try a meat once, and don't like it, they will now be able to say, "I tried fake meat and it's horrible". Being adventurous and finding the things you like is all part of the journey of becoming a vegetarian. If you're a picky eater, it may not be for you, but if you like always trying new things it's an incredible experience!

There are a lot of VERY tasty meat substitutes out there - its really just a matter of being able to afford it which is extremely unfortunate. Theres a lot of dairy substitutes that are very nice as well - I actually prefer almond milk over dairy. Cheese though.....that is a vice for me. A huge vice. I try to avoid eating soy constantly and I have found that Sweet Earth makes FANTASTICALLY DELICIOUS non-soy veggie burgers. I'm not even a burger person, but I love those.

Just like anything taking a break from something you love is always good. I stopped eating meat for a year or more and it only made a rare steak taste 100 times better. For me that is the best reason to at least lay off the meat for a while.
