I had my doubts because of the potential weight of the magnets but it looks like it prints as fast as any other core xy printer. Just the concept of never having to worry about replacing worn or stretched out belts is a game changer. Thanks for reviewing this.

More importantly, the reported max speed of 80cm/s and acceleration o 22m/s² (yes, that's *meters* ) are absolutely insane. If it actually can print at these speeds, you're looking at a Voron 2-sized printer that's _much_ faster than Voron 0.
@MrJofArnold
@MrJofArnold 10 месяцев назад
Yeah. Not far of Vz330 speeds either: some people are rocking 3,000mm/s and 40,000mm/s^2 but you need to spend a lot of time building and tuning those! (Mine's just 24,000... But one day!)

Thanks for bringing us another fun and informative video, Joel! This looks like a very interesting printer. I love that the industry is finally breaking free (at least in some cases) from the bed slinger style. My first 2 printers were core X/Y, and the first one I got over 15 years ago. It's a bit funny to me that some people (not you) are acting like core x/y is something new, which it obviously isn't, but going that fast is definitely something my old printers could not do. Speed, accuracy, consistency, reliability, ease of use, and low maintenance issues are all things I'm looking for in my next printer. I'm not sure if this one is it, but it may be. Though, I'd really like to have tool changing for multi color and different support materials would be ideal. I"m assuming that next year the Bambu Labs newest printer will be something that competes with the Prusa XL just like they put out their unit to compete with the Prusa Mini. If Bambu can put out a large machine with tool changing like the XL, and can keep the price down, I think that is going to be the one to get for a lot of folks. *Edit: I forgot to say, "High-5!"

@ajosepi1976 10 месяцев назад
The really cool thing about linear motors is the fact that the heat build up from use is spread out over a very large area. They will normally handle a lot of heat. Now if this one is designed the same, time will tell, but I think it should handle a lot of heat.
@MisterDeets
@MisterDeets 10 месяцев назад
My thoughts exactly. If I had the spare cash to buy one, I would be clawing for my wallet right now. Seeing the build volume and how it's arranged, I am beginning to wonder why there aren't more 300x400x400 vorons floating around. For a little extra belt length and a wider machine, the effector movement would be roughly as fast as a 300 cubed machine, but the extra build volume you get would be massive.
@Mr.Thermistor7228

idk though arent magnets very affected to high heat? i think its like a threshold type deal where at tempuratures at or above a certain point they begin to go haywire and flip polarity and shlt lol i know there is a point at which it begins to hapen
@ajosepi1976
@ajosepi1976 10 месяцев назад
@@Mr.Thermistor7228 Yes you are correct. It is called the Curie Temperature. Good Wikipedia on it. Neodymium is about 310C on the low end, BUT they will lose strength before that point. The reason linear motors do better than a "can" motor is the magnet can lose heat and not fully contain the heat even in a 100C chamber. If you have a 100C can motor on the outside, the inside can be twice that. Linear motor is pretty much just the outside temperature plus a few degrees.

One of the things I see is how the whole frame wobbles during the operation. It's got power, but definitely throwing around the forces from movements. What I look for is fast but still keeps smooth movements. Like doing figure 8s with no jerk. I like the idea of having the table itself move down as it builds, just needs a bit more stability. That part does look amazing and how fast it was done, sucks it had issues when moving to the convention. Though does show the printer needs extra attention when moving it after set-up.

i was following this closely as I was very excited snd this event was meant to be the big reveal, and they havent even shown it printing, surely they should have had spare parts on hand in case something like this happened?
@3DPrintingNerd

From what I understand, it's a prototype, and there were spare parts, but the thing that got damaged wasn't just a part.

I hope this becomes a jumping off point for other companies and kits to start using linear motors too if the accuracy claim is true.

Will we see these linear motors available as stand alone parts? I would be interested in integrating them into my own set of open source printers. It appears as if everything else on the peopoly setup is standard klipper, which is fantastic, but I don't really need another printer, I just wnat to upgrade something like my voron 2.4 with these linear motors.
@1288832
@1288832 10 месяцев назад
voron soft frame, if you put these motors on the voron, the voron will bend. Voron made for beauty, not for printing.

@@1288832there isn't anything soft about 2020 anodized aluminum extrusion for 3d printing. I'm currently running my voron 2.4r2 at 500mm/s at 20000mm/s^2 acceleration and it's working great.

Great to see this technology being applied to consumer grade printers. I have a question though. Why not mount the linear motors to the frame and drive the print head with toothless belts in a core-xy fashion?
@cenciende9401
@cenciende9401 10 месяцев назад
That defeats the point.
@stew675
@stew675 10 месяцев назад
@cenciende9401 everything is a tradeoff. The CEO said that they're already working around limitations due to weight and that's why the X is shorter than the Y. How imprecise would having belts be? If we want to not use belts though, then how about taking advantage of the linear precision, and mount the X axis to the frame on both sides and like the Y axis, run what is basically a slider on each side and use a crossed rails style head mount? The precision would keep both sides aligned, there's now less mass to suspend and both dimensions are free. The tradeoff is that there needs to be an extra linear motor rail but since the Y axis would need to bear less weight this may likely be offset by reducing the chonkiness of the beams there. Just trying to think of a way around having to suspend and toss about as much mass as they presently are.
@stew675
@stew675 10 месяцев назад
A cross beam setup as in something like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-So6IFT_iR34.html but driven with linear motors at each side

I am wondering how it will behave when tiny metal dust gets built up on the magnets. Shouldn't there be a cover on top of those magnets?🤔
@dekutree64
@dekutree64 8 месяцев назад
No cover because the air gap between the permanent magnets and electromagnets needs to be very small, usually around 0.2mm. I wouldn't expect there to be any significant amount of iron dust floating around most places, but if it is a problem you can clean it off easily with a lump of tacky putty.

I know the big machines with linear motors have large warning signs to stay away with pacemakers, mobile phones and watches. These smaller ones probably are not producing large enough electromagnetic fields to be a big issue, as long as you don't sit directly on the printer or lean against it while it's running.

is this TRUE... i was told that if you create a g code on a thumb drive that is sliced to one 3D printer ... Then the thumbdrive g code can not be used on a different 3D printer.. even though it is of the same size build plate... IS THIS TRUE ?
@3DPrintingNerd
@3DPrintingNerd 10 месяцев назад
Gcodes are typically machine specific. The thumbdrive itself can be used anywhere still but that specific gcode is for a specific machine.
