13:43 - The three different pressing zones
16:32 - How the process produces results in the big games

24:25 - The counter-press
27:14 - What makes this Liverpool squad legends
Anfield has played host to some of the most iconic European Cup and Champions League nights in the tournament’s long history, but perhaps none quite as dramatic as the 2018/19 semi final second leg against Barcelona.
Trailing 3-0 after a first leg featuring some Lionel Messi magic, Jürgen Klopp and his team faced an uphill task made even steeper by the absence of two of their vaunted front three - Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino - for the return. But the hosts produced a fearless and relentless display, both on and off the ball. Two goals apiece from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum secured the 4-0 win that saw Liverpool through to a Champions League final they would win against a Tottenham side managed by Mauricio Pochettino.
In this brilliant and exclusive Masterclass, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders gives us an incredible and in-depth insight into the team’s tactical approach on the night. Off the ball, he explains how the team set up to limit the inevitable threat of Messi, as well as former Liverpool heroes Luis Suárez and Philippe Coutinho. He also reveals who the coaching staff viewed as the key players for Barcelona, and how the team worked to control their influence. He goes on to explain how, on the ball, Liverpool refused to change their approach despite missing both Salah and Firmino; and how the relentless approach of the players on the ball helped them create the defensive doubt and overloads that unsettled the Barça defence from the first minutes.
It’s a sensational insight into one of the great Champions League performances from the almost unique perspective of an influential member of the victorious coaching team.

@Tahmid Ahmed I'm not sure I agree. Pep said that they aim at unpredictability in the press/chase. This includes attacking play. Our team attacks with a lot of freedom allowing Thiago, Trent, Robbo, Salah, Mane and Diaz to express themselves. The issue with previous styles was that you would get entire teams focussed on a creative 10 that dictated all the play. Wonderfully skilled and entertaining, but easily shut down by defensive teams. This era of Klopp and Pep seems an energised version of Michel's total football with teams able to attack from multiple areas and situations.

Well if you analyse the game and the team rather than the individual players, by now you should know how our team plays. The system they created is the foundation of how we want to defend and attack. This makes our team more stabilized and not afraid if any member of the team wants to leave. Its the System thats more crucial. if player leave they can be replaced. If the system broken, everything crumbles. 1 fine example is milner. He can play in our system it suited his style. But if you put milner in current arsenal, chelsea, city team he will suffer. Keyword: System. At times even i have doubt because we press so high up the pitch we leave our defense wide open that we conceded a goal. But its football, sometimes u have to take risks to get the result

Yes! That's because once Messi has the ball you're already in trouble! They stopped his supply lines. And when he did get the ball they swarmed him and bumped him off of it. Most Defenders are too scared of messy and end up giving him the extra yard of space he needs to work his magic. But if you get in his face he can't handle it. Robbo ruffling his hair while he was sat on the ground was a moment that perfectly summed up this match.

@@martinkerrmusic Busquets was Barca's most important player all those years, he was the system, and they still rely on him because they can't find a replacement. You can always find creative players and goal scorers but the most successful systems are dependent on elite midfielders. Barca is no worse off now compared to the messi years, the key is whether they can recreate a midfield that can compete at the highest level.

No, see there is difference. The orange buttons represent the players positions through a timeline, so if he had left Vidal's orange piece out of its original position after a movement, then thats technically wrong because that would mean he doesnt return to original position and his position has changed. He can avoid it by reiterating all the changed player representations of the pieces, after every time he moved them explaining a pattern or scenario, which is obviously more tedious than just moving the pieces back to their original positions, which he did and is nothing extraordinary imo.

Notice how Pep emphasizes doubt. It goes back to Klopp’s principal teaching, of turning Liverpool from doubters to believers. It’s the basic thing you need to succeed, and it’s what drives this machine of a team through games. Self confidence and a refusal to be struck down. Pep totally understands that. You can tell how much Klopp trusts Pep with all the interviews and praise he’s mentioned his coach. It shows the familial aspect of this team, of this club. Yes not everyone has the same talent, but we make sure everyone has the same passion, and I think you can kind of see how the players who leave are the ones who lose that passion. I dread the day Klopp leaves, and I’m glad that for now it’s still four more years away, but I dread it not because of what comes after but because of what has happened. The football this team has produced has helped me grow up with it, and I don’t want to see the day where our glory becomes memories. Enjoy this team LFC, there may come others that break more records or hold more trophies, but there will never be anything like this one. YNWA

My Top 3 Liverpool comebacks 1. Miracle at Istanbul 2. Anfield Offensive of 2019 3.Stevie G Screamer of FA cup 2006. side note: I don't know if Conchesky's Cross is intended or accidental in that 2006 FA Cup Final. 😅

personally think this is the man to eventually take over from Jurgen. He has such a good understanding of the club and the style of play. Yes Gerrard would be nice to see but I think this is the move that makes more sense and would work better

You can see the admiration Pep Lijnders and the rest of the coaching staff have for our workhorse players like Hendo and Milner with how many times he emphasised their commitment to the game plan. Kinda gives the impression that these coaches likely know more about these players than the keyboard warriors on twitter who're always looking to criticise them. 🤔

Tbh, the reason why I love first rounds of the league cup is because of Pep press conferences and interviews, I love how he talks about football I love his passion, you can see it in his eyes, it's like he's full of fire when he explains some football phenomenon. That's why Jurgen called him in his new contract interview " The Energizer", because he is for real , and you can see it in training videos he loves what he's doing and everybody loves him. I'M LOVE WITH OUR COACHING TEAM. AND I FEEL FINE :)

It is comforting that even if Klopp leaves eventually in 2026 or thereafter, he will be able to pass the baton to Lijnders who is more than competent to take over the helm. Stevie G can then come back to be an assistant coach to learn the LFC philosophy and tactics.

What I find crazy is that the entire starting 11, the reserves, the under 23s etc all buy into this idea and style of play. It's instilled deeply in each and every one of them. All 11 players on the pitch have to work together, chase together, fight together for this system to work and they did it and still doing it. With Anfield behind them, no team in the world can stop that Liverpool team.

The small number of times that he mentioned Messi just shows how effective this defense was that he wasn’t even given the time of day to get touches on the ball. Instead of game planning around the superstar, they planned around everyone else and stopped them from having an influence on the game. Gegenpressing is truly amazing

This is incredible strategic and tactical analysis of the game. I had to go and watch the highlight again to see all his explanations. The keys words are 'steal the ball' and make them play in our own way not theirs. If you force your opponent to give ball away and make mistake, you will definitely win games. The first goal and second goal explain it all.
