I watched half the video before realizing I was watching an ACTUAL COOKING TUTORIAL

it’s wild that brian apparently knows hunzi well enough to get him to make a cameo in his video but it somehow also makes perfect sense

When he ended the video by saying "I'm gonna go live in the woods now" all I could think was that it was the woods of Center, Nebraska, and that he has a program that will let you earn between 10 and 20 thousand dollars from your own home.

My mom and I are HUGE popcorn junkies, so I showed her this video in the hopes we could try it out. She was rather hesitant at first, especially since she knows I’m a wuss with spicy food (also we have one of those hand-crank popcorn spinners instead of a wok and weren’t sure if this would compromise the recipe). So we worked up to it: first, we decided to put the salt into the cooking oil instead of sprinkling it on the popcorn afterwards. This turned out to be a GAME CHANGER, and she vowed to never do it the old way ever again. Then I got my hands on a jar of Lao Gan Ma. We started by just using the oil and setting aside the solids. VERY tasty. Then we both added the solids; ALSO very tasty, but I’m a huge wuss and can only handle a little bit, so Mom claimed the rest. If it weren’t for heartburn we’d try the chili powder, and maybe one day we’ll work up to that too, but even with just the Lao Gan Ma it’s DELICIOUS. Five stars, 10/10, would recommend Pepcorn to a friend that isn’t my mom.

Tried this with two tablespoons of chili oil, because I didn't want to make it too spicy. It tastes like buttered popcorn with a very subtle pep. I will come back to this comment after trying it with more chili oil. UPDATE: You really can't overdo the Lao Gan Ma.

my mom always uses lao gan ma in her si ji dou so when i made pepcorn myself my brain was automatically like ‘ah yes, green bean popcorn’ 10/10

As a Chinese former international student moved to Australia ten years ago, I can tell you, Lao Gan Ma is the Goddess for all international students.

2 1/2 years after this video was published, i still haven't been able to get it out of my head. i'm going to make pepcorn right now. i will be back. update: the tinfoil came off and now there's popcorn all over my kitchen. i'm going to try this again. update 2 electric boogaloo: I DID IT!! i don't have a spice grinder because i'm broke so i used regular salt but i made sure to dissolve it as best i could. also my gochugaru was out of date (i moved and forgot to put it back in the freezer) so i used shin ramen powder. it's VERY spicy but that's what i like >:) 10/10 would splatter my kitchen with chilli oil and popcorn again

Every so often, I come back to this to refresh myself on how to make Pepcorn. I do not own a wok, a spice or coffee grinder, nor have i found Lao Gan Ma at any of my local grocery stores, watchful as I may be. But one day I will obtain the things I need, and this will be the fabled map that leads me to the promised land. Could i simply buy those things online? Absolutely. But this is a prize I must earn on my own two feet, for the adventure to truly feel worthy of the holy reward.

I haven't made pepcorn yet because I'm only midway through the video, but I just want to confirm some things I have learned in my popping days for y'all: - Buying buckets of popcorn kernels and stovepopping is 100% the way to go, i can't even enjoy microwave bag popcorn anymore - 1/2 cup kernels is, by experiment, about the same as a "large" at an average movie theatre - i personally disagree with the use of so little oil, but i'd never go higher than equal portions kernels-to-oil - for the best movie theatre taste and movie theatre heart disease, the correct type of common household oil is butter-flavored crisco - do not use a shallow or small pot/pan. You need at minimum a large saucepan, but even there you need a lid instead of foil

i used to play this a lot while cooking during the pandemic because the house was too quiet. brian, i hope this comment finds you well. i tried making this delicious pepcorn -- like a fool -- in a deep saucepan with no rim. by the time i saw the tinfoil inching up the sides mid-cook and lunged for my tongs in a panic to keep it steady, it was too late. once the foil popped off, so too did hot kernels, scalding chili oil, and flammable bits of popcorn go flying all across my studio apartment like a one-woman wizard fight in the cold city streets on the fourth of july. some landed directly on my electric gas range, starting an open flame that set off my smoke alarm and since that day, i continue to share this video with my loved ones so they can enjoy this delicious treat that almost killed me. it's great with parmesan.
