It's finally warm enough here in the Panhandle of North Idaho to plant the rest of our vegetables! Today we'll be demonstrating how to properly plant peppers and tomatoes in five gallon buckets/containers. The process is fairly straightforward, and by following these simple steps we should yield some good tasting fruit this year!
I've learned many of the techniques used in today's video from the RU-vid channel 'Hollis and Nancy's Homestead.' Check them out here: / @hollisnancyshomestead
Items used in this video:
-Organic Perlite: amzn.to/458t2n0

What is Blood meal?

It may sound gross, but it's exactly what it sounds like. It's essentially dried blood (usually from cows) that is turned into a powder that acts as an organic fertilizer for plants. It's high in nitrogen which helps with foliage growth, which should therefore boost your pepper and tomato harvests. Thanks for watching!

I live in a warmer climate. My bucket plants were NOT happy. Trying again on north side of my house this time with bucket plants - sweet potatoes.

So far so good here! We are however, in a not as warm climate. I'm hoping that they continue to do well! Good luck with the sweet potatoes!

Excellent! It’s the squirrels that attempt to eat my Jalapeño plants around here. Not so much the habaneros. You wouldn’t think squirrels would mess with peppers but they will.

Thank you!! Aaand.. Interesting. You know I never would have thought squirrels would mess with peppers either. I'll be on the look! I've even added a few more peppers/herbs since this video so I'm hoping everything respects my fence :) Thanks for watching!

OMG, we love peppers and tomatoes!!! Those are some of our favorite things to grow. Once again, the MIGHTY Kubota provides a helping hand!!! I read your response about how valuable you find it. It is high on my list of things to get once we get out there!!! Love Lolly in these videos!!! She looked pretty pooped around the 7 min mark. I am guessing she was up to some shenanigans during the camera breaks. 😊 Wow, you are going to have a great harvest!!! You will have to share some of those recipes you mentioned. They sound VERY tasty!!! You guys stay safe and be well!!! Looking forward to more videos!

Chicken manure does pretty good for a garden. My mother-in-law puts her chickens in her garden over fall and winter. I believe that horse manure works the best. You do need to watch what else you put in there though. Horse manure has a lot of nitrogen. When you cook chicken, you can save the bones to add. Just clean them and bake the bones to dry out. Then just grind them up into a powder and add to the garden. You can do the same with egg shells. I would get a container of red wigglers worms and add 2 or 3 to each bucket. Worms help break everything down, free worm castings, aerate the soil and mix everything. 2 other things that you can add is lump charcoal and lava rocks. Just grind up and add.

Ahh interesting.. Right before I read your comment I was thinking to myself, "I wonder how bone meal is made?" So is it primarily chicken bone then? Thanks for all the tips! I may mess around and throw some worms in there. I have plenty of those in my ground soil as well.

@@theidahopanhandlers really any bones will work. But chicken bones are used more often than not because of how readily available they are and being bird bones, they are hollow and easy to grind. With the worms, I say red wigglers just because they can process everything better, compared to nightcrawlers or earthworms. But regular earthworms will work.

Do you do any of your own composting or just use the bagged stuff

I just use the bagged stuff. My compost bin hasn't produced enough to feed the garden quite yet. Now that we're in lawn mowing season I've been using my mulch along with leaves from last Fall that I saved and I'm hoping that combo will produce a lot of compost.
