I think I have watched every video they have on RU-vid, pertaining to knapping, but I definitely have learned the most from watching yours. Thank you for all your videos. They are amazing.

Thanks and really glad you have learned from them. Flintknapping is a great hobby and I enjoyed making them

I have no idea what you're constructing, but that thing you're working on and your tools are so beautiful that I'll just go ahead and watch all the videos

Jim. Just wanted to you how much of an inspiration you are to me. AMAZING work! Also I've started using your hand pad styles but what is quick, cheap and amazing is the rubber sand paper pads for sanding. I take a razor knife to notch out the cavity and bam! It's finished!

Yes, it is dacite from Oregon near Glass buttes. Dacite is just obsidian that is opaque instead of transluscent....
@paleomanjim

@finaltom5 The direction of the billet determines the direction of the flake. The angle of strike releative to the platform determines how far the flake will travel. The surface features or morphology determine how the flake spreads out....

@phoenixofthewolf Obsidian and dacite are great for begginners, but any chert will do. You can learn the basics of pressure flaking with the stone you have or using bottle glass. To learn percussion you will need much more. There are several knappers I know of in Kansas. I reccomend logging on to the Paleoplanet forum and introducing your self, many good folks will be happy to help you....jim

I started watching your videos when you first posted them. I followed your channel for many years. I can honestly I’m very happy to see you’re still out there and still replying to the comments. When are we going to see a new knapping video?
@paleomanjim
@paleomanjim 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. I have not knapped much in recent years, but I am considering doing one final last flingknapping video just to see how much of it I have retained. They say you never forget how to ride a bike, maybe flintkanpping is the same! I'm sure my skills have diminished but think I can still make a descent point, thanks

Hi Jim, Do you ever give live classes? I have tried my hand at self-teaching, but based on the huge pile of fchips, lakes and broken pieces with only a handful of small crude points to show for it, I'm not a very good self-instructor.

El martillo es hecho de la madera con una tapa de tubo de cobre conectó al fin. La tapa del cobre es llenada de principal. El blanco coloró martillo es hecho de un colmillo del Hipopótamo y es el marfil. Gracias. ...jim

@finaltom5 In the early stage of reduction when the biface is too large to hand support I often rest the piece on my leg, but try to elevate the area where the flake will release up off my leg a bit. This reduces the chance of leg contact stopping the flake short or causing the flake to step terminate....
@paleomanjim

I sometimes use an old grinding wheel to abrade the edges. I now prefer to use gritty hammerstones for all abrading because the grinding wheels are too agressive and cause a lot of edge damage. Edges prepared with grinding wheels often require a much harder impact with the percussor to detach the flake. Edges prepared or ground with sandstone or hammerstones will usually detach flakes with much less force from the percussor. Less force equates to less breakage of the biface in the final stages..
@finaltom5
@finaltom5 13 лет назад
When you are trying to get a ong flake off, do you support the flake side on your leg when you strike it or is it off your leg a bit? I ask that because in order to get a long flake off with useing an ishi stick its not supported depending on your jig.

@paleomanjim So basically the direction and the force you do towards a peice when striking it will determin the direction of the flake and the distance it will travel? Does that still factor whether the flake will be long and thin or rounded? Ty by the way for the info and quick response
@paleomanjim
@paleomanjim 11 лет назад
Yes, the piece can be spalled up anyway the knapper wants. I usually try to get the biggest biface I can and the resulting smaller spalls are saved to make smaller blades or points....

It would really be a big help to us beginners if you guys would explain in detail what your goal is on the big pieces. That was we can get a good visual of why you are hitting where.

I am new to flint knapping and i get that you need somewhat largish peaces of materiel to work with but that piece seems so huge like its kind of a waste to use the whole thing for one bi face so i was wondering is there some way to brake it in half with out risking destroying the piece?

@scarz1951
@scarz1951 9 лет назад
From this angle it still looks like you're striking straight down. Are you arching the bopper inward with an arched blow of the bopper?
@paleomanjim
@paleomanjim 9 лет назад
scarz1951 Yes, it is arched blow and much of the arc is from the wrist flexing. The force of the blow can also be re-directed how the biface is supported. At the moment the percussor strikes the platform it grabs the edge of the biface and trys to pull it down, but then the flake detachment begins and the energy goes into peeling the flake away. How the biface is supported determines when the flake detachment actually begins. Loose support can cause the biface to actually rotate more before the flake detachment begins. This is not a bad thing, but it does change the angle between the biface and the percussor, such that the force at the moment the flake detaches may be different that what it appears.
