For those who don't know Rick Riordan, the author of the original books, who was heavily involved in the making of this show unlike the movies, wrote them as a tribute to his son. His son, I think his name is Haley, has ADHD and dyslexia, so he really struggled in school. But he really liked Greek mythology. So Rick told him the myths as bedtime stories, and when he ran out, he made up his own story about a modern demigod going on a quest in New York City. That's why he gave Percy ADHD and dyslexia, to prove to his son that anyone can be a hero.
I'm learning some new Rick Riordan lore. Funnily enough after reading over 15 books in the Percy Jackson universe, this is one of the first times I'm actually learning more about the author himself. 🤔
What’s really cool is how things went full circle when eventually Haley himself wrote an actual short story to add to the universe, called Son of Magic, part of the Demigod Diaries
She already spoiled that the minotaur comes back, I thought Percy killed it. Oh well, I guess not that big a deal. She also explained a few things that the show itself will explain in episode 2 (like how his pen sword keeps coming back to him)
I think the idea that riptide returns to his pocket is because of the characters ADHD without it returning it would be lost immediately. I lose my phone every time I set it down. It’s important for plot reasons
the author wrote it as a kind of empowering story for his kid who also had ADHD and Dyslexia so yeah the important item returning to your pocket every time would be awesome for anyone but especially people with ADHD lol
@@anthonywalden239 it could be, honestly. I have adhd and if i put something down chances are i'll get distracted and forget it there. I wouldn't say i'm forgetful bc i'll remember but i'll remember like 4 hours later, randomly...lmfao. I've noticed that it's an adhd thing too.
I do think Janci needs to hold back a bit more with sharing book information, a lot of the things she's saying feel pretty spoilery to me when watching just with the context of the show. Let them be confused, if the questions aren't answered by the end of the season, then maybe share some more info.
Agree I sometimes will watch along with the crew but I never read the books and I like being surprised so I probably won’t watch any of these reactions until I finish the whole series.
I love this series so much already. It's a lot closer to the books than the movies and the new stuff they added enhances the episodes rather than hinder them. And that goodbye scene was so heartbreaking. I can't imagine what it took for Sally to put so much trust in Grover. I can't wait for more.
Loving having a fan of the books on this show and Janci’s knowledge but slight correction: The Sword is NOT a Sword all the time. It is a Pen that TURNS INTO a Sword when the Cap is Removed. It can also turn back into a pen by putting the cap on the sword's tip. As for if it can write, that wasn't shown till HoH which was the 4th book of the 2nd series so we have a loooonnnggg way to go for that lol
You can definitely tell that the black sails writers are getting their teeth on this. The rumination on the meaning of heroes and monsters, the set up for a deconstruction of the shows core concept. it's great.
also that voice during the storm scene is nick boraine who played lord peter ashe in black sails. plus bear mccreary scored both shows. also two actors later on
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 Percy is exactly how I always imagined, it's actually uncanny. But Annabeth so far isn't as charismatic as I remember, I hope she gets better
@@DanilegoPlaysshe is definitely colder than in the books, but she did start out a fair bit more mean than later books. And I’ve been a bit iffy on Percy overall but that’s largely been the lack of humor, the scene after killing Medusa was perfect. “I _am_ impertinent.”
It's in one of the later books where riptide can work as a normal pen if the cap is put onto the back of the back of it but percy doesn't figure this out until it's needed because he's only used it as a sword lol
Percy can use Riptide as both a pen and a sword. When he puts the cap back on the top of the blade it turns into a closed pen, but when he puts the cap on the back of the pen it turns into a regular pen that you can write with. This was always a mystery till the 4th book in the spinoff book series Heroes of Olympus.
Regarding the rhino little Percy sees, that's lifted straight out of "The Chalice of the Gods": "A Hephaetus-made steampunk rhinoceros thing was trundling along the street, power-washing the cobblestones with blasts of steam from its snout." Techy, automaton sorts of things that demigods run across now and then are creations of Hephaestus.
Fun fact, he actually can write with Riptide. We don't find out until "The House of Hades" which is the second to last book of the sequel series, but if he puts the cap on the handle of the sword it turns back into a pen, uncapped. The"ink" is celestial bronze, the same magical material the sword is made out of.
@@smashbrandiscootch719and even if it was counted as one, it isn’t important in the slightest, if it ever happens in the show that’s what? 10 books? 10 seasons? 10 years? no one will remember this comment
It’s also been really cool to see the show and have waves of nostalgia hit me from the stuff I didn’t even realize I remembered. It’s been about twelve or so years since I read them
The way both Eric and Janci looked over to Aaron when he made the "well... she did have a little god in her..." joke was the best! Love the adaptation of the books! Such a great start to a show :D
Yeah it’s definitely better than the movies but I really hate that they cut to black a lot during an exciting scene and the action scenes are a bit lacking. I’m hoping they’re saving it for the later episodes
AAAAA! I was OBSESSED with Percy Jackson when I was around 12 years old! So glad to be able to follow you guys among the series and see your reactions! I hope you guys like it! It's such a fun story!
As someone who just reread the book after episode 4 I gotta say I love the changes they’ve done in the show while also keeping up the themes from the book I’m looking forward to seeing you guys meet annabeth next episode!
I'm curious to see what changes you're talking about. I'm a long time book fan, and for me it seems like a lot of the changes are just minor things that are ever so slightly worse than the source material. I'm curious to hear what worked for you
@@thecolonel1457 in this episode specifically I appreciate the change of the chimera chasing them from the train to the arch because I feel the book version of them visiting it because of annabeth love of architecture takes away from the urgency of their mission
Janci is an amazing energy super bright thanks for bringing her to the channel as always blind wave never fails to deliver quality reactions thanks guys
My biggest gripe with the show so far is that the character of Gabe is not so awful. In the book, there was a reason that Sally was with him, and she was almost sub-servient to appease his temper. The characterization of both Gabe and their relationship is very different here. It makes me wonder if that will change anything down the line. Also, Riptide is just a magic sword. It doesn't make sense to me for it to be hidden by the Mist. That would be cumbersome to carry and not have it snag and catch on everything. The pen form of Riptide returns to Percy's pocket from anywhere.
I agree to an extent but I personally think the change was made in order for sally to actually be a more likeable character to an audience that doesn’t know her reasoning for staying with gabe. it would be a difficult juxtaposition to portray her as a pillar of strength & support in percy’s life while also having no explanation for why she would keep him in an overly physically abusive environment. it’s a hard thing to translate from page to screen.
@@musicalprodigy126 they avoid the whole "demigod scent" thing entirely, though. I think it's an easy enough explanation. The movie adaptation did that part well. On the whole, I'm okay with this series. I just hope the end doesn't inadvertently make the good guys look bad because the audience isn't given a reason to despise Gabe.
I actually like their dynamic here: “YOU KNOW I HATE WATCHIN’ THE KNICKS ALONE” “SO DO I” They seem like an old married couple. Gabe definitely isn’t that bad and is actually pretty funny.
I think this was partly changed so kids don’t watch this and think it’s okay. Even if we find out later why, Disney has had a lot of toxic relationships and we don’t need them to see more.
HELL YES!! Been waiting all day for this! I didn't think Calvin would react to it, makes me even more hyped! Janci must have gone insane waiting so long. "the fountain works too" Nice call, Calvin! The opening gives me chills everytime, it's straight up the 1st page of the book. It's different from the book. I mean, they changed and added stuff to "update the story" as Rick (the author) has said but the core is there and that's the most important part! Actually, the sword is a magical object. It disguises itself as a pen. If Percy or anyone else has the sword out, the mist will come into play and "hide" the sword as a weapon like a baseball bat or a rifle. Speaking of the mist, it's role is like Grover said: to hide the magical/mythical world from the human world. It makes impossible things seem "normal", so the armored rhino looks like a normal garbage truck from a human's POV but it's still a rhino. Just watched the full length, great reaction, you seem to all have really enjoyed the episode and that makes me happy! One banger of a series premiere it you ask me 💙
YES YES YES YOU'RE DOING THIS! THANK YOU. Also hopefully other big react channels will follow your lead and finally give this show its time in the spotlight.
i wonder if they realize that the actor playing percy (walker scobell) is the boy who played young adam in the adam project (also i kinda wanna see them react to his deadpool monologue)
Yess!! Caught up on this show last night in anticipation of your reactions. Never read the books or watched the earlier movies. Excited to be along for the ride!
So excited for this! These guys are often really good at guessing the twists and turns of a series, so I'm kinda hoping they don't figure out the twists in the last half of the season!
I honestly love this show, idc what anyone says, i grew up with the books and love them dearly (literally, they look terrible now) and i really don’t mind any changes from the book stories, it always happens when you translate from book to screen and i think a lot of the changes are also bc the books are pretty “old” by now, so i feel like Rick almost kinda rewrote the story to how he would do it today and i think that’s so fun
The thing with the sword isn't the Mist, it is literally a pen that transform in a sword. But yeah, celestial bronze, it can hurt monsters but no humans
It’s magic of some sort that causes the change. I can’t recall if it’s ever explained as Mist Manipulation magic or what. After all, I’m sure it didn’t turn into a pen in Ancient Greek times, seems more a modern necessity that it look less conspicuous.
In The House of Hades, it is revealed that, when touching the handle of the sword with a cap, Riptide can transform into working ballpoint pen with ink glowing like Celestial Bronze
She says “every time you uncap it, it turns into a sword 😂” like it’s funny and I’m here like: yes, every time you uncap it, it does in fact turn into a sword and it’s awesome
really happy to have janci in this to rep us book fans! gonna be looking forward to the next few days, imo the show ramps up once we reach the third ep. i'm interested in the non-readers' takes on certain parts since they do a lot of deliberate subversions from the books that really worked for me because of my expectations of it as an adaptation..
So happy to see you guys reacting to this show, it's so much fun! Not sure if you guys caught this but the kid playing Percy was young Adam from the Adam Project!
just binge watched the show and so excited to watch your reactions, comments incoming on each!~ general rule i never watch a reaction for a show ive not paid to watch as well so finally got Disney+ back and ready to dive into these again!~
you guys are gonna react to the series!!!!!!!! You don't know how hard I cheered when I saw this video. I love you guys reactions and I've been waiting for this ❤
Never read the books but I watched the 2 movies and liked them at the time, but after 1 episode of this it's already better than both movies(p.s I'm in stitches over "boba fett, where?"😂)
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a show that had greek mythology in it. The last time I watched a television show that had greek mythology in it was in the 1990s with Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena Warrior Princess. I loved Hercules and Xena lol. Also, I liked that you mentioned Kevin Sorbo's Hercules.
