Rick Riordan's books made me aware to a lot of things. His stories made me see more of a belief, of a person, of a race. His characters are so real that it made me accept what was not condsidered the orthodox norm. So yes, his stories are better.

Apologies in advance. I can tell this’ll be a long reply. I love how, as you said, each character has a little bit of representation. Percy is sarcastic and quick witted, because he spent so many years stuck with Smelly Gabe, learning to make quick comebacks in order to get through to him/ to make himself heard. Annabeth is really intelligent and wise beyond her years, after escaping a life where her brothers took priority and her spider-filled nightmares were swept under the rug. Coupled with that, she has dyslexia, showing how no one is without flaws and how that is okay and normal. Reyna’s father saw horrors that scarred him, twisting his perceptions of reality that blinded him from seeing the damage he unknowingly inflicted on his daughters. People are not blank canvases. They have conflicting motivations. Rick knows that and makes each character better because of that. He doesn’t see a character and make jarring assertions without integrating that into their personality. He actively asks ‘How would this affect the character’s interactions, or present itself as an inhibitor to how they express themselves?’ Side note. It’s been mentioned in a couple of his books at this point, my favourite example being in The Serpent’s Shadow, standing at the edge of the Sea of Chaos being held in check by the sliver of Order in the Obelisk Of Ma’at, where Carter muses about where he stands in the world. I’m paraphrasing here, but his line about how he doesn’t know how the world started, by the Big Bang, Egypt rising out of the Nile or the world being created in 6 days (with one day of rest) but that the Obelisk Of Ma’at and the Sea Of Chaos had to be some sort of embodiment of the divine matter of the universe, existing as something that Carter could perceive with his mortal senses. An even greater part of this part of his books is in the interactions of Magnus, Sam and Alex. Magnus sees the existence of a multitude of gods to be an affirmation in his belief of atheism. Sam perceives them as beings that are different aspects of Allah. I can’t quite remember the quote, but it is something to that effect. Even Apollo questions how he came to be the Sun God after Helios faded. I know this paragraph is getting rather long, but how interesting is the idea that gods are tied to human beliefs, with the splintered Greek/Roman personalities that could literally incapacitate the gods. Even the fact that gods and monsters could fade as old legends die out. Not sure where to go from here, but I do thank you for your video and for articulating what makes the Riordan-Verse so much better than Harry Potter on the subject of representation. I’m getting dangerously close to knocking Harry Potter, which also holds a special place in my heart, safe from all of the authorial retcons that Rowling can dish out, so I’ll leave you with a small addition to a podcast listening list. Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. Each week a chapter is read and discussed through a particular theme, to see how it changes the meaning. Authorial intent is mentioned a lot and even has a dedicated episode, but there is a great deal of detail that the show goes to, often exploring plot holes or character flaws/motivations, to see how inconsistencies can actually enhance narrative tension and character conflict. Each episode ends with a blessing for a character in the chapter, as a way of affirming their struggles, before extending the message to people in the audience who are going through similar things. Would recommend this listening. That’s all from me. If you made it this far, you get to be angry at the absence of blue foods from the emoji keyboard, alongside me! 🥣

The first series also has some MAJOR representation that isn’t talked about a lot: learning disabilities. These kids all have ADHD and dyslexia. I feel like all the characters that aren't Percy are pretty well written and familiar compared to the Harry Potter background characters. Like, I'd rather be friends with Charles Beckendorf than Seamus finnigan. Harry can also be a asshole sometimes while Percy is more friendly but badass. Percy Jackson has always been a series that I've always went back to read, despite me reading it over and over again, I'll never get tired of them. Susanna realistically, i think she pictured hermione as a white person. i don’t think her race was ever important to jk, but ya know, she was a white person in the 90s and her brain probably white washed the world she created a little. which is legitimately fine if she admitted to that, but her saying that she always pictured hermione as a woc feels like a lie to pander to the modern audience and that makes me sad :( i just wish she was kinda like “hey i pictured this character as white but it’s not important at all, so i don’t mind if this is retconned in the future and we make the story more diverse” i guess :(

@@jfudge7219 ? The Cupid scene was emotional because it showed Nico admitting things he had been hiding from himself and accepting himself, and not all of that is being gay. It was a pretty big plot point that made a lot of other things make sense, and it shows Nico's character growth as he starts to grow out of his crush on Percy and understand that some things are better thought in the mind than felt through the heart, and in that way it's like traditional romances (where, by the way, the same thing happens with only the character and personality change but same concept). It may not seem brave but it's braver than what most people do in their entire lives.

As an aspiring author who has been writing their own novel and fully attempt to publish it, as well as having a screen-writer and author for a dad (tho none of his screen-plays have gone anywhere oof, he still took many a writing class), I would go a step further and just straight up say Percy Jackson, at least the original series without the spin offs, is just objectively better then Harry Potter from a writing standpoint. I mean, Harry Potter is great, I've loved it for a long time, but each time I reread it, I see more and more issues that really hinder the books' plot. The entirety of Prisoner of Azkaban is a great example of this, with the time turners and mauraders being secret animagus plot (more like a plot hole poorly filled with more plot holes). But it comes back in the last books, perhaps not as strong, but book 5 onwards are riddled with small inconsistencies and plot holes that accumulate and grow ever larger over the course of the series. The last book is by far the worst ending I've ever had for such a built up series, it's nothing but a camping trip with odd intervals of action, making the pacing a nightmare. I never even finished the Deathly Hallows, I've tried twice to get through it, but I drew the line at the horribly unfair treatment Slytherin gets in the Battle of Hogwarts. Yuck. Percy Jackson has none of these issues. You can tell Rick Riordan knew exactly what he was doing and had planned it all from the start. The whole plot-points with Thalia and Nico prove this, plus the amazing handling of the actually well-crafted prophecies. Over all, I have no doubt in my mind anymore which is truly the superior series, and I'd argue that's fact, considering the writing makeup of the two.

I was literally about to launch into a rant about how it’s unfair to compare the two, and you can’t say one is better than the other but ... I realized I rely more on Harry Potter fanfic to stay in the fandom and with Percy Jackson I’m happy with how it is and have never read fanfic for it ... I will argue against two things though; one, JK Rowling knew from the beginning dumbledore was gay, she just didn’t publicize it and that’s why she dug her own grave for that one. Whilst editing the script for the sixth movie, she was reading a scene where dumbledore was talking about a girl he loved and she wrote “HE IS GAY” across the whole monologue and the screenwriter was surprised (again, her mistake for not being more clear about it from the start) Two, you can’t hate Harry for being an asshole sometimes. I get it, it’s not appealing and everyone would rather be best friends with Percy than Harry - sometimes myself included - but I actually liked that Harry was flawed in that way. He has anger issues and isn’t a perfect hero all the time and honestly I totally understood him. He was consistently lied to his entire life, plus abused as a child by people that were supposed to be his family, and had everything taken away from him by a guy he didn’t even know about until he was told he was a wizard. I mean, I’d be hella pissed! I’d probably throw a tantrum or bully someone more than Harry did throughout the series. At the end though, his heart was always in the right place and that’s what made him a hero. Flawed heroes are okay too! Like I said, I rely on HP fanfic to fill in all the holes JK left behind, and with PJO and all its spin offs it’s all filled in and explained which I loved. At the end of the day ... at least neither of them are twilight level bad!

yeah. i mean, i read h.p first, too. i was reading but at some point during the fifth book, i just kinda got bored, it was getting too bulky for me to easily read, so i wanted something simpler. i came across pjo and was in love, there wasnt just a backstory chapter, just percy being real with us. i also found some comfort cause of annabeth, who i can relate to, i suppose. i wanted to run away, which was exactly what she did. i found her inspiring and amazing, besides, the books were definitely easier to read because theyre less bulky and just light-hearted while still maintaining a nice layer of trauma and stuff.

So I just wanna share... The fact that I dreamed existing in the Percy Jackson universe says a lot to me, that never happened with the Harry Potter series mostly my imagination do the work for that. There was this one time, I even thought it was actually real and happening. I was in camp halfblood and Percy and Jason Grace was right in front of me, they were shaking each others hands. In my peripheral vision, I saw Annabeth and the rest of the gang. I was super excited and squealing inside 'cause I was like "Is this real? Am I literally seeing them right now?" before I woke up and realized I've been so into the series that I dreamed of it. That was like one of the bestest dreams I ever have... Making me dream of Percy Jackson just proves to me that I loved it more than I loved Harry Potter... I'm sorry my fellow witches...

Michael Griswold I'm a person who watched the movies before I've read the books... my reasons mainly is that I've always loved mythology and the movies have great animation and edits but honestly when I read the books after seeing the movies... my head can't stop comparing and complaining with the movies like "damn why is this not in the movie?" or "that was suppose to be percy vs clarisse!" or "the hell, they were supposed to be younger like 12!" or "Alexandra Daddario its not your fault, I know you're gorgeous but Annabeth's hair was blonde." or "It was supposed to be Tyson giving Percy his retractable shield!" or "why aren't they wearing those signature orange t-shirts?!" also "That ain't Grover at all, he doesn't even act like that." Yeah I have these major issues going on in my head the moment I've read the books, my mind started comparing the movies to the books and at that moment I understood why the movies where hated... I remember how I laughed when they decided to change Annabeth's hair to blonde in the 2nd movie and I was like "Dude too late, the damage was done..."

As someone who grew up reading Percy Jackson instead of Harry Potter like most kids my age, I honestly found it seriously hard to read the Harry Potter series. My problem was that Harry Potter doesn't just have the plot and adventure, it also has the entire school year it has to fit into the book. In Percy Jackson, you spend a chapter or two getting to camp, spend a little time in camp, then the rest of the book is the adventure, the mystery, whatever. In Harry Potter, you spend so much time going to classes, studying, getting in trouble with teachers, that it feels as though you don't get any plot development until half way through the book, which seriously frustrated me.

@@ilqar887 Yeah, but shouldn't the adults have been solving the mysteries, not these 3 children? In Percy Jackson, there was a reason for these kids to be in these dangerous situations and reasons as to who they could and couldn't ask for help. But in Harry Potter, it seemed like most of the adults were fine with these 13-year-olds fighting giant spiders or breaking the law to sneak into their rival's dorms. I get that Harry was "the chosen one", but he was only chosen to defeat Voldemort, the adults should have been preparing him for that, and Ron and Hermione didn't have to be dragged into these dangerous situations either. The adults ignoring the threat half the time just took the complexity out of it for me, fewer people would have died if the adults were intelligent.

The seven, Nico, Will, Reyna, and Thalia all go to NY pride parades, change my mind. Like, imagine seeing a group of ten kids. A black haired kid wearing a pan colors talking to a blonde girl, who appears to be his girlfriend wearing bi colors and a Yankees cap. A blond with glasses and an odd scar wearing the ace and biro colors, talking to a Native American girl with choppy hair and a pan flag. A black girl with the ace and panro colors with a older and taller Chinese boy with an Ally flag. A Latino with the pan colors and his girlfriend who has an ally flag too. Two dating boys, the darker skinned one with a black jacket that says “Move I’m GAY” on the back and the blond with a bi flag. A Hispanic girl with aro colors talking to another goth girl with short black hair and ace and biro flags. IMAGINE IT. Sorry, you saying Percy and Annabeth weren’t straight reminded me of my headcanon. -Also Magnus joins with Alex, and they have matching bi flags, and a genderfluid flag for Alex- Edit: I just realized almost everyone else in the fandom thinks Maggie’s Pan. I love HP and Percy Jackson but I’m gonna have to go with Percy Jackson (and the entire universe at that because I can’t pick a singular one of Rick’s amazing series, are you kidding). I don’t know quite why, but I think you explained some of it pretty well. And it deserves a good screen adaptation because while the musical is the best thing ever, they can’t make 20 more and it’d be cool to have it more accessible. I was one of the unfortunates to not only see the movie at all but to see it first. In sixth grade we did units in two different classes that involved us reading the first two Percy Jackson books and watching the movie after finishing each one. I had seen The Lightning Thief movie a few years earlier and when I had to read the book I was a bit confused and thought my memory of the movie must’ve been wrong, but when we had to see the movie I realized it was just that inaccurate and bad, same with the second. I didn’t read the rest of the series for other couple years because school kinda ruined it for me, but when I picked it back up again I didn’t put a single one down and I knew I had a new favorite series. It’s. Just. So. Good. This vid is making me want to re-read them all

I'm late to the party but I'm still here! I started reading Percy Jackson less than a year ago and started Harry Potter almost 3 years ago (I'm 20 btw) so in that aspect I'm also very late to the party :D What led me to the HP movies and books was the community (mostly because of youtubers like Seamus Gorman and the SuperCarlinBrothers) and also my sister started watching the movies. What led me to Percy Jackson however is some booktuber (don't really remember, I think it was polandbananas) talking passionately about the books, how great the characters are and how cool the mythology is. These two reasons that drew me in are still the ones that appeal to me the most about the stories. Of course I do like the story of Harry Potter, but I also really like the community around it and the wands are a cool plus ;). And this applies to Percy Jackson as well; I love the story and the community is also pretty great, but it's not as big/mainstream as the HP community is (but that sometimes makes it cooler?) Overall, I believe I enjoyed the Percy Jackson books (only read PJO and HoO) more than the Harry Potter books because of the pace and the characters are all just GREAT and it's funny throughout the whole story, not just some funny moments here and there. What I like about HP is mostly the story around voldemort's past/present and all the magical people/things/places. I would write a conclusion to this comment since it's so long, but I don't have a conclusions so... that's it! :D

It makes me so happy that you recognize Carter and Walt because they just don’t get the recognition they deserve. I love Magnus Chase and Heroes of Olympus, and Trials of Apollo. I always never liked Harry Potter because the characters were kind of boring. Mind you this is coming from a kid who read the SpindleWick Chr9nicles books when I was 6. I am a GT kid so even for me coming from a magical creatures things, I don’t know. I feel like Harry Potter is kind of hard to read. The wording reminds me of a Victorian or England based book, which was just confusing for a children’s series
