If Hermione’s time turner was the only one to enter the castle, that means Bill, Barty, and Percy, all once held her time turner.

Barty, Percy and Bill didn’t have to deal with Harry and Ron. Can you imagine what Hermione would of accomplished if she didn’t have to save Harry or the school every year???!!!

Hermione cracked because she’s a perfectionist. She tried to overachieve in all her classes in addition the stress of taking 12.

Them all having a time turner actually explains how they passed divination. If they took their divination classes on the 2nd or 3rd turn then they have already seen at least 1 hour in the future. I would not put it past Crouch Jr. to create a minor event just so he could predict it. Easiest homework ever! I also agree with the logic that if Hermione's time turner is the only one to ever enter Hogwarts then it must be the same one that was loaned to the other 3 (and who knows how many more) students prior.

Another solution: in book 5, Harry's excuse for occlumency lessons was remedial potions with Snape. Perhaps it's possible to achieve OWLs after the normal testing date, or take extra classes during time off, as the students responding to "remedial potions" didn't react as if it was totally unheard of, just embarrassing for Harry. Perhaps there are also ways to achieve these OWLs through self study or homeschooling, which Hermione would not have had an easy opportunity to do as a muggleborn.

A big part of Hermione’s character (especially early on) is how by the book she is. If they told her to only use the time turner to get to class, she’d do just that. Barty, Percy, and Bill probably used it to also catch up on work (and sleep) but 3rd year Hermione would follow the law to the letter.

I don’t believe any of them would need a time turner at the same time. Thus, Hermione’s could’ve been the same one that the previous students used, thus technically being the only one to enter Hogwarts.

Well Hermione was dealing with extra stress that year: worrying about Harry and Ron, concerns about Sirus and studying to help Hagrid out of his legal issues regarding Buckbeak. Also the others may have passed thier exams, but Hermione was intending to get perfect grades in her classes.

Percy took 12 classes in his 7th year (12 NEWTs). This would've been the same year Hermiond had the only time turner to enter Hogwarts. Doubt they shared.

I also love that when Percy entered the Battle of Hogwarts he says “am I late?”

If there was ever only 1 timeturner in Hogwarts, it could've been passed down from student to student through McGonagall. Notice how Barty, Bill, Percy, and Hermione's need for it never overlap.

Hermione didn’t grow up in a magical family either,, She would’ve had way more to learn from scratch.

Two other options: 1 - Staffing, had more instructors thus easier scheduling or 2 - one on one studies with a professor as nobody else in there year wanted to take the class. Thus no Time Turner needed.

What if the class were in another order until Percy did the owls, so everybody could take them but a lot o students were under too much pressure and dropped the extra classes so Dumbledore changed the class schedule so that no other student has to suffer under the stress

Notice the wording: “the only timeturner to ever enter Hogwarts”, this doesn’t technically cancel out the possibility that other students used a timeturner, just that if they did, it was the same exact one Hermione used.

I’m surprised that Tom Riddle was not included in this theory. The twins equate being Head Boy with getting 12 OWLS. What if Tom Riddle had a time turner 😨😨

I had a thought concerning the philosophers stone, the book states that Percy keeps giving Harry really bad advice in chess, and Percy seems like the type of character that would be good at chess, he's smart and he grew up with Ron whose good at chess, so one reason for this could be that hes so tired that he isn't thinking clearly

You must remember that the quote about Hermione's time Turner the only one to enter Hogwarts could be a lie McGonagall told a second year to make sure she would not be tempted to discuss it with anyone. Another possibility is that Bill and Percy had alternate day classes. One day they went to a certain class and another day they went to a different one. Also remember that Harry got a good OWL grade for every class he cared about. It would be easy for Bill and Percy to just scrape by in the classes they care less about and still say they have an OWL in every class.

I think that the reason Hermione struggled with her class load is because she made a promise to ONLY use it to go to her classes. This would mean that she wouldn’t have taken extra study time, because she was trying so hard to live up to her promise. Also I think the reason Mcgonagall had Hermione promise to do exactly that is because there had previously been problems with the people who had used the time turner before her. It’s not hard to imagine that Crouch got up to some Dealth Eater type stuff or that Bill used the time turner to cause a bit of mischief, or even that Percy used the time turner to do extra patrols to live up to his position as Perfect

This reminded me of this guy at my school who could only take 4 classes in a semester but taught himself 5 other subjects outside of class so that he could take 9 AP tests, and he passed them all! Maybe Bill, Percy, and Barty are just freakishly dedicated haha

I like that he’s calling the first book The Philosophers Stone rather than it’s US name. It’s a book written by a UK writer set in the UK so the proper name for it would be the UK version

One of the things that I was always annoyed by was how their schedules made no sense. I personally think they did have Time Turners and Hermione's issue was simply being too involved in Harry's stuff.

What if they just all used the same time turner? Then it's still the only time turner to ever enter Hogwarts!

I think a simpler explanation is that Hermione was the only student taking every class in her year, and it was impossible to schedule all of the classes around one student's workload

So - I think that Barty Crouch, Percy were such "Do-Gooders" that they might have been working for their OWL's before that year. And they might not have spent time with friends during any of the 7 years - (which explains their characters). However Bill - He seems lovely. And I would not be shocked if Sirius and James also somehow collected 12 just for the heck of it. EFFORTLESS SMARTS. lol

As I remember it as well, Herminoe had the time turner because of a timetable clash, but timetables change every year, so there may well not have been any clashes for Percy/Bill/Barty's OWL years

I actually never really thought about this but now that I do , I feel like maybe Bill, Percy or Barty Crouch Jr. didn't have time turners because they didn't feel the need for it . Hermione, in my opinion, was the most eager . For one , Fred, George and Ginny ( the three Weasleys mostly responsible for teasing other characters ) weren't really seen talking about Bill being extremely nerdy like Hermione , and Percy was always described as pompous, arrogant and irritating but not exactly as studious as Hermione. What I think the reason they didn't need a time turner was because even though they did take all subjects , they didn't attend every class . I do agree that they can't have missed all lessons for a class and passed it just from studying on their own , but perhaps they looked through the syllabus and decided which lessons they'd need to attend and which they'd understand on their own . Hermione , however , couldn't tolerate missing even one lesson as she was determined to get the highest score being the perfectionist she was . Not wanting to miss any lesson is why she , I think , required a time turner . She was cracking under the pressure of the 12 classes not because she was trying to take all of them , but because she was trying to ace each one . Bill , Percy and Barty managed to pass all 12 and Hermione decided to drop two classes because she wasn't too interested in them , and mainly because she wanted to ace all classes which was practically impossible when even attending each lesson needed a time turner . Just what I thought .

Well she did say “the only time turner to enter hogwarts” implying that the time turner that she uses was the only time turner to enter. But it could just mean that bill and Percy used the same time turner, just at a different time. It would still make the statement “the only time turner to enter hogwarts” true.

Exactly Ben, the way time turners are used making the timeline self-consistent is great. Also why the Cursed Child doesn't make sense, because it isn't abiding by the same rules.

If Percy or Billy had timeturners, they could have use it to pass their divination test by first waiting to know what they did during the test to pass the exam and then going back in time to take the test knowing what to do

You know how Hermione says “don’t interact with your past selves”? If it was just her and she already knew she had a time turner or would at some point. and she was by herself.… it wouldn’t really matter.

I always thought it was weird that Hermione only got an E in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Like, they only did that so Harry would be better at something.

Hermione's intelligence is all in memory retention and logic. Awesome traits by their own merit, but as we know from her interactions with Luna, her creative intelligence either doesn't match, or she's too much of a rule-follower to let it flourish. OWLs aside, Hermione also never really accomplishes anything on the level of Dumbledore (deluminator, twelve uses of dragons blood, "contact with the most notable witches and wizards of the day", being published in Transfiguration Monthly), Snape (all the potions and spells he reworks/invents) or James Potter and co. (marauder's map, animagus by 15). Those things don't just require perfectly correct retention and copying of instructions, they require imagination and creativity. I imagine Bill and Barty Jr. thought of ways to get around certain limitations, maybe even using the room of requirement to get extra sleep while stipulating to the room that no other version of them can enter. Percy was probably just too stubborn to fail.

The "we hardly ever see Percy" reason doesn't really work: Percy is *4* years ahead of them. They wouldn't see him much anyways, especially with his Prefect duties. (also, the twins are the comic relief - they have to be there)

Hermionie had extra pressure helping Harry & Ron so 10 is far more impressive. Her career was also more successful than any of the other 3 mentioned.

Buckbeaks case and Ron’s drama and being Harry Potters friend are all contributing factors for why the workload was overwhelming in her 3rd year. Shouldn’t be overlooked imo

Idea: Barty Crouch Jr. should have survived Goblet of Fire so he could actually be a useful villain and maybe even act as a foil to Percy.

I would like to suggest an alternative approach (especially in Barty's case). Simply spend hours and hours with Severus and learn all you can about potions, right? Simply learn how to brew felix felicis (with Snape's guidance of course) and then "all of your endeavors will be successful". As difficult as this potion is to brew correctly, I believe this to be a great alternative to time turning your way into 12 OWLS.

I read this person writing on how much Hermione got older. They managed to calculate everything and it resulted in about 4 to 6 weeks older after the 3 years (cause she dropped 2 classes and probably didn't use her time turner, not to say not all) But she also was petrified for 3 weeks during her 2d year, ad as she wasn't explicitely fed or anything we can assume her metabolism was frozen. So, in total she's probably between 1 to 3 weeks older... Which is kinda ironic cause being 3 weeks older would have allowed her to get admitted to hogwarts a year sooner Though for Percy, Bill and Barty Croupton Jr. they probably were around 3 to 4 months older after their O.W.L.S so about 1 month older per extra classes

I actually love the idea of Barty Crouch Jr being a timelord again.

The way it worked in my school was that the electives had to share their timeslots. So at first (aged 13) it was easy: Do you want to take french or spanish? Later it became more complicated because we had more choices. More popular/relevant classes got more time slots because there were more students. We could mix a 3-hours-a-week English class with pratically anything but the music and the theatre class were at the same time and therefore incompatible (also because legally only one of these classes was allowed to count into the overall grade). Same with the the 5-hours-a-week chemisty and the 5-hours-a-week French class (Which would have been a legal but unpoplar mix, apparently). I've no idea if that made any sense... my point was: only one class per subject, if you couldn't fill two classes. There are 5 Griffindor boys in Harrys dorm. If we take that as the average there are only 40 people in his entire year. So even if everyone took each elective there would still only be two classes per subject. (That's also the reason the core subjects are alway shared between two houses.) Furthermore it would mean that there are around 4000 wizards and witches under 100 in the entire British wizarding world, which is ridiculous considering their infrastructure alone. So I always assumed that Harry's age group is particular small. Why? Well, around the time of his birth everyone lived in constant fear, not knowing if they would see another month, if they should leave the yountry etc. That's not an atmosphere many people want to bring children into. But 5 years before that? Who knows how big Percy's year group was? (It certainly wouldn't be special if out of 40 he was the one who got a job in the ministry right?) Bill was born in 1970, same year as the the start of the first war so birth rates wouldn't be affected at all. Barty Crouch jr is even older, so it's the same for him. They probably had enough class mates that they didn't need a time turner to attend all the classes, because the classes run one after the other. They would just have potentially been seperated from their lazy "I take Deviation and Care" friends. It was very unimpressive that Hermione "the brightest which of her age" broke under the pressure of 12 classes when she had a freaking time machine. And yes, she had other things to do but what high schooler doesn't? And when doesn't SHE? She managed SPEW, and prefect patroling, and the DA, and triwizard research, and death matches, because those things were important to her as opposed to Divination and Muggle Studies who both offended her interlect and/or sense of self (presumably, given what Arthur Weasley, expect and fan, knows about muggles). So in a perfectly boring normal year say 1984, with his baby brother just starting Hogwarts and apparently nothing else of interest happening, why shouldn't Bill Weasley take as many classes as he can?

Using Rowling as a source is pretty bad at this point. She's made up so much that she doesn't know what she's said.

Maybe Percy is a seer. He recommends Divination to Harry as one of his favourite subjects, after all. He could predict examination questions and learn the answers (it seems like cheating, but if you can't help seeing the future, it's not really your fault). It would explain lots of his actions, even though he might have interpreted some events wrongly.

Honestly, I just think JK made a mistake in saying that they got 12 OWL's. It is impossible to take all of the 12 classes at the same time due to an overlap in the schedule (unless the schedule changed). So the only option was to use a time turner. But at the time we got the the 12 owl information about P and Bill in CoS, JK probably hadn't figured out time turners yet. So imo, that is just another mistake of JK. We can always just ask her on Twitter.

Percy, Bill, and Barty were all born into wizarding families. The could have achieved a lot of learning before they even entered school, and maybe even had tutoring outside of school by their parents and in Barty's case may have even had private tutoring outside of school. The spellcasting detection is limited to knowing where magic was casted and didn't work around other wizards meaning in their homes they could have had plenty of time to practice magic outside of school. Yes they may not have been allowed to cast because they were underage; but would that hold true if wizarding families really wanted to homeschool their children early and give them an advantage? I always thought it was silly that magic teaching started at 11 for the wizardborn; from age 6 onwards there is no reason why a wizarding family wouldn't want to start teaching at least the basics to give their children an edge.

You guys are so fascinated by Percy. It makes me re-think a character I've basically always ignored.

Hermione has had 12 years of experience with Muggle Studies, all she'd need would be an exam-primer a month before the exam and she'd probably ace it. Percy and Bill have spend years listening to their dad so they'd have a solid foundation of it too. We've also seen her answer questions in class with what she learned during the summer. It's not that hard to imagine Bill and Percy also studying extra during summer.
