I'm over here in Ireland and been growing bare root for years. I just went on to J.Parkers Wholesale and delighted to say they look like they will deliver here so fantastic. Usually buy from Europe but always on the lookout for something new ;). My only issue with bare root is a lot of the colours are just plain wrong. Especially Oriental Poppy's for some reason. The amount of time's I've planted Royal Wedding and it comes up orange 🙄 Still, bare root is the way to get something a bit different. And, it is always better to plant out at least five perennials, of the same kind, instead of just one. They look better and they are less likely to get bullied out by something else.

Oh, I'm so glad JParkers will deliver for you - they've only ever got dahlias wrong for me - the bare roots have always been reliably what I ordered so I hope you have some better luck with your poppies.

@@cottoverdi Oh lol, I spent ages choosing some lovely bits and pieces and then found I couldn't actually order anything. I'd say they used to deliver here but now, brexit. :( Massive waste of time and such a shame, they have so much variety. Sorry about your dahlias lol. Almost worse considering the work involved with them.

@@michaelhutchinson1029 I spent ages filling a basket and then no. I should have known we can buy nothing like that from the UK. I ended up buying from farmer gracy, but really, the bare root season is over now. I think our options are farmer gracy or bulbi NL

Thank you so much, just what I needed to see. Such a good video. With frost coming up next week, would you pot them up in a old basement or outside ? thank you
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Год назад
Hi Shirley, that's a tricky one because it depends what you've purchased - if they're hardy perennials, then they can definitely be potted up and left outside but if you think it's going to be particularly cold, you could lay a bit of frost cloth or an old sheet over them at night (but remove during the day). I wouldn't leave them in a dark basement - they will all be needing light. If you have a cold frame or greenhouse, then these will also work as frost protection. If they aren't hardy, then you definitely need to keep them indoors or protected somehow until your frosts have passed but they will need light - so potted up and kept in a cool but light room should work. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi Rose, How lovely to meet you, and thank you so much! I ordered these from J.Parkers Wholesale (www.dutchbulbs.co.uk) because I needed a lot, but I think there are quite a few companies who will send out bare rooted perennials. Hope this helps.

EXcellent video -- Although bare roots don't look like much, remember they are TOUGH. I soak mine over-night. I do mostly hostas. Often, after an overnight soak, a tiny leaf or two will emerge. Just remember if you put them in pots, place them outside where they are supposed to be. Hostas like shade, so that's where I put my pots.

Hi John, I think you still have plenty of time. You can really plant them almost all year long but the warmer it gets, the more you will have to keep an eye on the watering situation. I should think the nursery will be sending them out this month. Good luck - I hope you have great success. 🌺🥀💚

Hi, where did you put your pots? Outside against a wall on saucers? Through winter is OK? How often do you water them? Do you let the rain fall on them? Can you pot them straight into the garden in mid November UK? Thanks so much!
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Год назад
Hi Louise, yes, I put these bare roots straight outside into nursery pots - just out in the open, I didn't bother to try to protect them at all since they were all hardy. I put them on pallets so, no, I do not use a saucer for them and I let the rain fall on them. If you get them in November, it is an ideal time to put them straight in to the garden - they will spend the winter months making new roots and settling in and then in the spring they should burst into life. Good luck with yours.

Can you plant bare root perennials outside even if you're still getting hard freezes? Or should you plant them in pots and put them out when it gets warmer??
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Год назад
Hi Heidi, I think it's a big risk unless they are super hardy and haven't been grown in a protected environment. If they've come from a grower, where they used a greenhouse, instead of a field, then they will not be used to the cold temps and will struggle. I've always found it best to wait until it's no longer freezing. It's best to pot them up, water then and then give them lots of light and protection, like in a cold Frame or greenhouse. Hope this helps.

@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Год назад
Hi, sorry for the late reply - I have been away for a week. If the bar root plant has shoots, then you need to plant as normal, with the shoots above the soil but, depending on how hardy the plant is, you may need to give it some protection from the cold (if it is cold where you live). If the weather is warm and the plant is hardy, then the shoots won't need protecting. Hope this helps. 😁🌸
