This may not look like a cactus, but Pereskia is actually one of the more ancient form of cacti-something I'll have to go more into in another episode, but for now, this one is #199 of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.
Featured plant:
Pereskia weberiana

What a very interesting plant, I would never have guessed it was a cactus, and the prickley stems, well, that's just as fasinating. Thank you again for sharing I learned something else today. See you tomorrow Summer.

Worth noting that this is a genus with about 14 species. There are differences in the leaves and flowers between species. Also, there are several cultivars of variegated Pereskia available if you want color every day!

This one is nearly unkillable in my experience, the broken stem last for months and roots in air Btw with time huge tuber cluster will form under ground

Pereskias are actually edible. I live in Brazil and we eat it on salads, omelets, etc. They have more iron per ounce than beef liver, and more calcium than milk.

Austrocylindropuntia subulata also has leaves but they’re very rudimentary.

It's a high protein plant. Just prepare the way you prepare spinach, or make juice, or in omelete, or salad.

Which state you live, do you mind if you mail me seeds or the plant sample. Or where I can find.

The prickles make it a cactus? I don't understand. The prickles keep it from being a succulent? Do you have a link for one? I'm liking the shrub habit of this. Hmmmmm🙂
@johnjhill3

In all Angiosperms it is the flower structure that decides its family relations. There are thousands of prickly species which are not cacti, and many tropical rainforest cacti which have no prickles, like the "holiday cacti." Succulent basically means turgid, or juicy. Stems and leaves are thick, fleshy, not paper-thin. No relationship or dependence between succulence and prickles. When you ask for a link, are you seeking a seller?

Frank Drebbin Yes Frank. Somewhere that has it to sell. (And thanks for the explanation.) 🙂

@@susanpratt4061 ...stevesleaves.com has a variegated form of a different Pereskia species. Steve has been featured in a few of Summer's videos. He has the highest reputation in my eyes.

One thing I just have to learn to accept: that Summer will probably never care wether she uses the right one, when it comes to "cactus" vs "cacti" 🤗

This confuses me. When do you use cactus and/or cacti?

@@juniperparla3584 Cactus is singular (this cactus), cacti is plural (these cacti).
