Side by side comparisson between the Nintendo 64 original and the Xbox 360 remaster of Perfect Dark. The Nintendo 64 version was emulated in high definition. Support the channel: ko-fi.com/neogamer / neogamertvga
The N64 original on the left was not played on original hardware, but via an emulator. Firstly, the resolution was never that high and secondly, the lens flares are missing (many users think they only existed in the remaster - but that was not the case, the N64 version had them too, just not via emulator!)
Thank you. Jesus Christ. How can these people forget the blinding lens flare from the original games? That little room in the second mission with the shield tech item is infamous for it.
Maybe one day microsoft will bless pc with the Rareware collection, but it seems VERY unlikely unless there was really high demand for it. Going to have to stick with xbox.
I know the feeling and this emulator won’t support the Xbox or Playstation controller it’s only mouse and keypad controls on it for some reason 🤦♂️ maybe I gotta configure it manually to my controller or something I’ll figure it out 😂
Just keep in mind it was captured from PC using emulation, which reduced some stutter & flash the original had when played on true N64 hardware. But I’m I big Project Dark fan & agree it was ahead of its time. 😊
Updated the visuals, models, and performance without changing the art style or original vision; this is a perfect remaster and honestly the best way to play Perfect Dark. Only one issue however; those damn lens flares! They're a bit excessive.
@@mrmatt1165 I mean that's literally just false for anybody who has eyes. Xbox 360 version improved almost everything. If you like some things more from N64 version, fair. But the N64 version looking better is just incorrect. This is not even an opinion, this is factually wrong.
@@MalphasMikaelson I think he's referring to how the models and textures look, how they were translated into HD. It isn't "factually wrong" just because everything's more detailed.
Didn't know they had a remaster of this game. This game was basically my childhood game I remember replaying the story so many times. Perfect dark and 007 was the best shooting game back then.
watching this in 2024 and remembering that when they brought this out on the 360 I remember saying they did justice to her face because her "new" look looked similar to that of her face on the box the game came in.
Still a very enjoyable game, playing it on my Xbox Series X on a 65 inch screen and the 4K resolution makes a big difference, has a pristine look to it. Wish they did this with more old school games…
That city fly-by is so good, even today. Awesome cyberpunk feel to it and the Chicago levels, helped massively by Grant Kirkhope's atmospheric soundtrack. Maybe someday they'll port this remaster to PC on Game Pass or something.
Good news, it’s on console game pass and I’ve been re-enjoying it on my Series X. It’s the literal X360 version running at 4K/60 so no PC version unfortunately, but boy does it look great on the XSX, gotta love the backwards compatibility
I rented it from Blockbuster and was amazed that the N64 could pull it off; I also actually wasn't aware at first it was basically a spiritual successor to Goldeneye which I was also fine with :) I just picked it up because I remember the cover looked cool.
This was my favorite N64 game along Yoshi's Story. It was a pleasure to play it on a silent passive cooled console with a controller that had a metal analog stick... no noise, no plastic cracking, just a pure zen state! That was gaming at its finest. I miss my old n64...
The Joanna redesign is one of the shittiest I’ve ever seen. Original Jo had a sort of boyish charm and was badass. The 360 version looks like it’s gonna ask to talk to the manager.
The pixie cut rocked. No attention drawn back then. Just was the character. Made a bit of militaristic sense for a short hair style on an operative too. I always really liked that box art for the N64 release too. I'd like to have seen that+her in-game (64) look combined. Which is what it looked like they kinda tried to do? It's a subtle difference though. I do remember there being a bit of inconsistency in Jo's design in magazines and promo stuff. In the CGI renders of her and whatnot.
You are looking at emulated gameplay for the N64. You can’t imagine how bad it really stands against the Xbox 360 version. But back then it was mind blowing.
@@beastofchaospureanarchie They released a prequel back in 2005, Perfect Dark Zero, but it was kinda meh and they messed up the story a bit. I did hear about a new Perfect Dark game coming out for the Xbox Series X, and PC though.
I think the only thing I’ve found “off” with Perfect Dark was Joanna’s design. It was always inconsistent and Rare couldn’t really find a look that solidified her as a character. The original N64 one seem to be the most memorable (however, the Japanese version gave her an entirely different face that might appeal more to that audience), though, I’ll definitely give the XBLA one credit because she resembles her look in the promo art more.
I still think her design's somewhat off in the XBLA version, even if it looks more similar to the promotional artwork. In fact, it's the reaction that I had with how this version looks, overall.
@@diegov1743 i fucking LOVE her design in Perfect Dark Zero, i liked her red and black stealth suit in Level 0 and the silver and blue Carrington Institute jumpsuit, the new Perfect Dark should just reuse the Dark Zero version of Joanna instead of the POS design in the teaser trailer, totally Wrong
They did a good job with the XBLA version, but there are things I don’t like. Like how the basic dataDyne guard doesn’t have the dD armband, something I loved as a kid. The Maians and their guns, I don’t like the new look of those. There’s other things but I still think they did a great job, I just prefer the original. I wish they allowed us to switch between the new and old, like the Halo remasters. That would’ve been awesome.
Such Nostalgia. One of My All time favorite games. I haven't played it in years but still remember where every enemy is and all the level layouts and weapons/ammo locations.
I’m honestly a little disappointed. There are some aspects of the N64 version that seem better, like the lighting. The only thing that’s better for Xbox is the smoother frame rate for movement (a lot less jerky!) and the rendering on the gun and the bodies of the characters. I suppose they must have used the exact same engine for the game and just spruced it up. This was such a good game and a very rich universe. It deserves not only a much stronger reboot but more games/stories and possibly a movie or series.
They did an awesome job at this remaster such a brilliant game too .. First played it on the n64 and the only issue was the framerates always used to lag in a gun fight
U guys have no idea how long I been looking for this game I remember playing this at my cousin house and I remember the music but I dont know the fuck it was called until I heard the music it sounded familiar.
The small things that the producers put into this masterpiece helped it stand out. In the third part of the first mission when you face off against the old hag's body guards in the room, you can flip the lights back on after they turn them off. This will stun the guards for a few seconds while they take off their own nightvision, giving you vital time to dispatch as many as you can. A favorite thing of mine to do in the first and third part of the tower was to shoot the cars flying around outside. It only takes a few rounds to blow them up!
I find the new higher polygon character models look super weird in the relatively unchanged environments. It feels really arbitrary which models and textures in the game received updates/changes and which didn’t. The mix of asset quality and the excessive bloom effects on lights make it feel like a strange hybrid between the n64 and and ps2/GameCube generations. Would’ve preferred either a proper remake or just a higher resolution port than this weird in-between thing.
The enviornments have *changed*. It's the geometry that hasn't been touched. But yes, I also think the characters look worse - I mean, just look at the XBLA Maians and Skedar. I really don't understand why 4J Studios decided to re-model and re-textualize the game, while the Banjo games still retain their blocky polygons.
The original also had excessive lens flare. This guy didn't use the right emulation settings so they don't show up in the original. The remake is EXACTLY how they look in the original games.
God this game was my childhood/early teens almost. Used to play the crap out of this game with my brothers. Co-op, counter-op and team battles against the toughest rated enemies. I honestly played this game so much more than Goldeneye. Also loved to use Elvis's body with a humans head but I think they removed that in the remaster. Gave him speed but harder headshot to hit.
i owned n64 growing up and i never learned about perfect dark til much later in life. im playing it for my first time on gamepass and its very nice to play as a remaster with nostalgia
I grew up playing Perfect Dark (N64) and later on played Perfect Dark (Xbox 360). Both versions played pretty well, and the Xbox 360 version has smoother textures and better sound without changing the original art style. I would love to see the original Perfect Dark given the Full Remake treatment and on Unreal Engine 5 💙.
I honestly don’t remember how far I got into the game lol I think I might’ve finished. I remember shooting the floating laptop 😂 thats when I knew I was tired of dying all the time. Mind you I was like 8 or something. Classic game. I wonder how it’ll do with the next gen consoles
I just want to at least have the option of changing between the older aesthetics (as you could in the cancelled GE007 remaster), because the XBLA just looks blah, to me.
@@Revo2Evo That must be why its sold 122 million units and is the 3rd best selling video game console of all time so far. And its not even done with its life cycle yet.
People forget that the N64 was not HDMI compatible at the time so people were playing the game via SCART leads on small screens which the visuals way worse than what we see here, but it was still my favorite game and to this day I have never spent more hours playing a game more offline than Perfect Dark
Wrong actually better as CRTs made the image softer and hidden the lower resolution of textures. It's why all SD games look better on CRT and look kinda awful on LCD HD tvs/monitors.
My only problem with the remaster is I wish there was an option to toggle off the lens flare, they're a bit blinding in some levels. Outside of that, this remaster is a good example of "what your mind remembers the original looking like."
I bought the remaster when it came out and some levels were so dark they were unplayable. You can see it in this video, look how dark some scenes are, where there is a total loss of detail in the shadows!
@@aaron_aj_knight_95 it's been a long time since I played it, but I believe I messed with those settings and it didn't solve the issue. You can see a huge difference in the shadows even in this video.
I disagree with many changes but I feel overall it is okay. What irks me is the lack of consideration when simply framing a scene. They made the moon brighter, the moon is the focal point. They added stars around the brighter moon, this is illogical. They added bright flares that compete with the bright moon, which competes with the moving airship. Overall the original is better because it has an artistic lens, while the new one clearly doesn't understand the philosophy of things the same way. Like another example, I really resent changing a blonde woman, to a brunette woman with glasses. Why would they do this?! The lens flares are also incorrectly rendered in either videos shown.
The texture and frame rate is highly amped up on xbox 360. But the color isn't as good and some areas are very dark. Also the light glare at times gets too bright. Texture and frame rate may be worse on N64 but the color is better and lighting isn't an issue
@@atrio1136 , My personal opinion?, Perfect Dark, GoldenEye is without a doubt more historic but for me, I like Perfect Dark more, Doom 64, The World Is Not Enough & Duke Nukem 64 are great games too
This is the way I feel about the remaster, it’s okay looking, not perfect by any means, but there’s nothing better then the original graphics in HD! The faces to me look more realistic in the original then the remaster. Just to fake looking.
