Perfect Glue-Ups for Better Woodworking

Gluing boards together sounds easy but often it can be a source of frustration for woodworkers, this week I am showing what methods I use to glue boards together evenly, for all sorts of woodworking projects and furniture making items I make; many people might use Biscuit Joiners or even loose tenons for this but I have another woodworking tool I prefer that doesn't require side clamping with C-clamps or handscrew clamps or even metal or wood cauls to bring the wood together and by taking a bit more time gluing, in the long term, it saves me time in sanding and other wood preparations later on and produces better and more consistent building results using this glue-up station.

Colin, I also use a paint scraper to remove glue. I also rounded the corners of the scraper blade to prevent an accidental gouging of the wood.

the blue tape, at 3:20: you can just put it on the top surface, but near the edge, without adding the ones on the front side :)

White wood glue is OK for small assemblies but using it on big assemblies caused me problems because the beginning of it starts to glue solidly while the job is not over yet. I switched to epoxy who provides me much longer time to complete my assembly. Thank you so much for talking about the gluing process.

there’s a youtuber that uses sawdust to remove the squeeze-out instead of the scraper method. seems to work a treat. might want to try that out. basically you just rub sawdust into the glue and then it binds up and is removed.

Colin great video. Question. I noticed you didn’t seem to put a lot of pressure on the boards when clamping. Do you apply clamp pressure only until you begin to see squeeze out?
@johnwhitley2898
@johnwhitley2898 2 года назад
Just need a bit of pressure to mate the joint surfaces. If there's too much pressure, the joint will "squeeze out" the glue and it will be an extremely weak joint.

Can't find the doweling jig on your site. Do you have a link? Nice pointers. I do use a damp cloth on my rails and stiles as the clamps are in the way and much easier to sand. Is that OK?

I never let the glue set up, as soon as squeeze out occurs I dump sawdust down the seams, wipe off and repeat . Never had discoloration after finishing or staining, ever!

so simple - thank you Colin. I really like this approach to get a perfectly flat side. But my question is what do you do with the other side to get it flat? Top surface flat is great, but then sticking this down as a top to a piece of furniture wont look great if the bottom isnt flat. How best to deal with that? Is that something you will cover in a future video? Thank you!
@marshallmurrell4583
@marshallmurrell4583 2 года назад
My question also. Seems there are a couple of possibilities. One is a planer, but then you have to worry about the snipe. The second is a hand plane - no snipe but a good bit of work.

Colin purposefully had uneven boards in this demonstration to demonstrate the dowel max. Milling all the pieces to same thickness before gluing will give the desired results. Still referencing from the "blue taped" surface is a good practice.

Hi, Great video, I disagree on the "telegraphing" of biscuits. I have used a biscuit jointer for 40 years and have not had one instance of telegraphing of the the biscuits I have joined. Thick and thin parts are joined with biscuits and I have never seen a issue. Loved the dowel jig though...

You're one of the first that I've heard say not to use cauls. Is this just your preference due to the extra prep and cleanup? Or, is there a specific reason not to, something that would impact the piece not being flat, or something similar? I've just never heard someone say not to use them, so I found this interesting. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

I bought a Dowelmax, based on your videos, and I love it. How do you get the glue off the bottom of the panel? (1) The joints aren't flat, so the scraper won't work so well. (2) The bars of the clamps are in the way. I've always used a wet paper towel, but I have exactly the problems with finish that you point out. I enjoy your videos; keep 'em coming.

Hi Colin, I look forward to your videos and always learn something. Keep it up. I'm a little confused though. The doweling jig will center the hole in the edge of a board but if they are different thicknesses, how does this make the top faces align flat?

Hi Colin, great video as always. I noticed that you used Bessey clamps, solid steel bar, this is very important I think. I have some square aluminum tube clamps and just did two glue ups about 22"x 22" and when tightening these clamps they warp, maybe a wee to much tightening pressure perhaps, but regardless using culls top and bottom , nice straight ones as well I had undesirable results and had to recut and re-glue. The bessey clamps won't bend like mine. I have to go and get some. Uuhhgg. Andrew
@brucelee3388
@brucelee3388 2 года назад
If you think your clamps are too bendy, try alternating the clamps top and bottom - I find that avoids most cases of simple warping. If you don't tighten the bottom clamps much before firming the top clamps up you also avoid having the boards explode out of the clamps while tightening.
@andreww6738
@andreww6738 2 года назад
@@brucelee3388 Thank you for your response, I will try the reversing method as you suggest. It is the clamp bar that bends a bit thus the laminated boards follow suit. I think the fact that the clamp "bars" are aluminum, and not really that thick to begin with, but also I am likely tightening to much as Mike in another reply mentions. Thank you for your insight.👍

The dowel tool duplicates the holes at the same distance from the board edge and same place (height) on each board. This allows boards of different thicknesses to align on one face.
@robertdennis1439
@robertdennis1439 2 года назад
I'm missing something here, you said you intentionally used different thickness boards?... in order to make a point?... how did you wind up them all being flat and smooth to one another? was it something I'm missing with the use of the doweling jig?

Instead of using Saran Wrap on the clamps, just rub some paraffin wax on them and your cauls. Glue doesn’t stick to the wax, it’s much cleanser and easier.
