Recently there have been major advancements in wood sanding techniques and products to help us achieve better woodwork results and at the same time, cutting down on dust in our workshops. Recently 3M introduced their 3M Xtract™ Cubitron™ II Net Disc 710W which is a new sanding net disc for random orbital sanders, released by @3MAbrasives. It delivers excellent sanding results while helping to achieve reduction of airborne dust by up to 99%. It's available in popular and most common abrasive sizes of 80, 120, 150, 180, 220, 240 and 320 grit, in to meet your application needs, making it suitable for all natural woods and manufactured wood products. Plus, the 3M Xtract™ Net Disc 710W discs even work on metals. The standard hook and loop design makes these discs easy to install and swap out, and the 3M-designed Precision-Shaped Grain provides a fast cut-rate and a long-lasting grit that helps contribute to quality and more economical sanding. Prove it to yourself on your next project..

I’ve been using these sanding disks for a while and found that they are so much more effective at removing material that you can start at a 120 where 80 would have been normal before. Finishing at 180 or 220 more than adequate for Osmo finish.

You can build an easy helper with 4 dowels on a board, put the sand paper upside down, then the sander on top. 2 bucks. But that doesnt make the 3M bad. It seems more cost effective than classic discs and match abranet

Great presentation on the 3M xtract. There aren't many videos about them online yet. I've been using these exclusively the past few months as well ever since I saw the video J katz Moses made including them, right then I knew I had to try them out. I feel they are definitely one of the best (if not the best)sanding product on the market and 2 things I've noticed is yes they work great for dust collection and I have definitely noticed they speed up sanding for me. They also last quite awhile if your not too aggressive with them. Previously before using these I was using the Diablo sand net and they're okay but these are leagues ahead of all the competition. A quick point I feel you forgot to mention was that these work best when used with a secondary hook and loop backing pad that usually come with most net based sanding products. I even think 3M recommends it as well.

Love the Cubitron II Extract! If you have a little mismatch on a furniture frame or glue-up, no need to get the plane. 80 grit will take off a 1/32 mismatch lickety-split! 180 cuts almost as fast as 80, so I'm going finer when all my 80 is used up. *Right now, I'm seeing a nappy texture to the finish, even with 320. It feels very smooth, but there's a microscopic nap to it because the ultra-sharp Cubitron cuts the fibers across. I'm going to try a roll of 320 Cubitron on a 16" block sander going with the grain to see if I can eliminate the nap, which really drinks finishing oil and requires an extra coat.

RE: Sander base stops holding discs. Supposedly, that can be a result of excessive heat (presumably from excessive sanding pressure) damaging the "hooks".
@knecht105
@knecht105 2 года назад
Have not heard that, but I guess it could be possible in an extreme condition
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins Год назад
I've heard that from 2 or 3 sources, and I think they're pressing too hard. Cubitron is so sharp there's no need to apply pressure, which is bad for your pad and your sander.

I have 3 things against the Cubitorn II sanding discs...#1) the cost of the discs has more than doubled in 2 years...#2) the discs edges bend and tear very quickly rendering the disc useless in short order. This happens most of the time when edge sanding. I don't have this problem with traditional hook and loop discs...#3) while the Cubitron discs work well, compared to silicone carbide they are no match...I can get 2 to 5 times more sanding done in the same time with a silicone carbide disc. For quick material removal a coarser grit of 40 or 60 is often necessary and Cubitron only comes in 80 grit or higher. I can get silicone carbide discs in grits from 36 to 8000 and the cost of the discs are about 19 cents versus cubitron at 85 cents each. Hmmm, longer life, significantly less cost, less disc degradation have all been factors on choosing not to use cubitron discs anymore.
