The Mouse Tail Heart
Yeah I know... I called Libra and I was WRONG...
You can't get'em all. There are just too many cycles. Western, Chinese, Ayurveda... I'm not always sure which gravitational wave is rolling through when comments like that come sailing out of my mouth.
Today a patient sitting on the chiropractic table waiting to be examined, stunned me with the same challenge.
"What sign do you think I am?"
This is not my favorite moment. We've only been in the room for 3 minutes.
me: "uhhh. If I were to base it off physical attributes alone... I'd say Taurus"
patient: "hmph... close. I'm an Aries on the cusp of Taurus. 3 days off. But my rising is Taurus and my dad is a Taurus. And even though I am VERY Aries... I show A LOT of that Taurus too"
Usually, I'd ask what the moon sign is, but the cuff links are saying "you're 15 minutes behind"
So we get cracking
Thoracic crunch, side posture pelvic lunch... cervical spine munch.
As we're finishing up the patient notes that her email address is PATIENTNAME53
I ask "why 53?"
Patient: "I don't know. All my usernames have 53 at the end of it. That's my first email from the AIM days. 2005. And every name after that has always had 53... I just like it. It's just me."
Me: Well... 5 is the number for the planet Mars which is the ruling planet for Aries. 3 is the number for the planet Venus, the ruling planet for Taurus. So if you were going to quantify your Aries/ Taurus persona it would be with the number 53.
Patient: Holy Sh*T
Me: I do... consider defecation to be sacred... But in numerology, that 53 is really an 8. Which is the number of the sun, and the ruling planet for your ego, exalted. The truest form of your personality. Or in other words... It's JUST YOU.
Patient: You're a legend
Me: Legends are dead! But... perhaps... I am... an explanatory list of symbols

Last week I got home, walked into my bedroom, and a tiny mouse ran across the room and into the book nook, and onto the bottom shelf of the bookcase.
This has happened twice in the last 5 years. A large garden abuts the back of our house. And even though I grow a substantial amount of catnip to attract neighborhood feline to help quell the rodent population so they don't EAT MY Nasturtium... it's the dead a*s middle of winter and the lioness hunting parties must have all been canceled due to covid.
So there's a mouse. I catch him. And my youngest offspring, who asks me at least once a day
kid: "can we get a dog?"
me: "no"
kid: "can we get a cat?"
me: "no"
kid: "Can we get a ginny pig?"
me: "no"
kid: "Can we get a hamster?"
me: "maybe... but you have to bring him to your mom's on the weekend"
of course, wants to know
kid: "CAN WE KEEP IT?"
So I set him free in the neighbor's yard across the street lol
Next night... I hear scratching
"Sh*t"
The next day I get a trap. Set it. Leave for the day.
That night the eldest child calls from the bedroom "DAD HURRY COME QUICK"
"there's chirping in the corner of the room"
This was partly confusing... bc she was playing a zookeeper game
so I also heard elephants and kangaroos
But I knew what was happening
I check the trap and it failed... it's supposed to be dead
The youngest spawn now comes hither and can not make sense of the half body and tail thrashing about in a plastic box
kid: "What is it?"
me: "Probably a Libra"
I grab the (almost) kill box and walk towards the garage.
I grab a piece of cardboard. And the ax.
The only thing missing was a black executioner head covering
the ax fell and sliced the rodent in 2
The back legs and tail moved so fast they began to blur. And that remained for about 30 seconds.
I looked closer... and saw for the first time in my life
A LIVE, BEATING HEART
It couldn't have been any more picturesque
Expansion
Contraction
Pulsations coursed through the immediate arteries
The thoracic cavity throbbed in rhythm
I sat
in prayer
and awe
...
This week a friend of mine experienced a death in her family
And she experienced her family arguing over a dying person's body
And she witnessed her aunts and uncles... unable to be present for the last breaths of their parent
NOW
I offered the following
"I've seen it. It's tough for anyone
Your #1 opportunity is to be compassionate for them
They did their best
Your #2 opportunity is to learn from this bc 1 day you'll be there
And you'll have to sit, hold space
and take someone's hand while they receive and give their last breaths"
It's one of the most profound experiences a human can have
And you'll do great bc of this moment
But it won't be easy"
