It’s funny how the Ai just rehash everything that you say to validate you and end with a follow up question. I wonder if you started with the premise that you can’t be successful in music production unless you are a perfectionist because only perfectionists are patient enough to deal with all the details that makes good music. I’ve never seen Ai saying you are full of crap, it’s always this endless loop of validating everything that you say and end with a follow up question to keep you going. But I agree with you, to finish tracks, you need some sort of internal or external time limit otherwise it ends up in an infinite loop of nitpicking and self doubt.

Yeah, a couple of times I tried to talk to the AI with a left-wing thinking and the AI responded as if it were left-wing, and when I spoke with right-wing thoughts, it first tried to correct me some things but with a couple of simple arguments ended up being convinced and become right-wing. The same when talking about the incredible wonders of AI, it told me many ways in which the future will be incredible thanks to AI, but then when speaking negatively about AI, it ended up giving me an almost apocalyptic version of the future.

THIS. Such an important topic. I have spent so much time refining my engineering and production skills that it completely ruined my creativity and i can’t get out of that zone. I need to know how to focus on the creative side again

Whatever you accept you go beyond - words of Eckhart Tolle and these are really important in making music.

Just like an overly agreeable talk show host or therapist, I felt ChatGPT added very little to this conversation. On the other hand I get that it feels good to be heard and understood and have your words reflected back at you by an ultra attentive and eloquent listener. I wonder if there’s a way to prompt the AI to dig deeper and challenge rather than mostly agree and reword?

(That being said, your actual thoughts on perfection and flow felt like valuable reminders. Thanks for sharing this experiment, first time I’ve seen someone use ChatGPT this way!)

I think it's also because here most of us make music on our own. In the US there are big studios, everyone is there and they go in and make an album. It get's mixed mastered, people work together etc. I heard Tupac went in, did song after song (ok other genre) and didn't even listen back to them once. WE NEED TO CREATES SCENES AND WORK TOGETHER PEOPLE! :)

Perfectionism appears when you do not know what matters so you decide to do everything and every thing is equally important. The first action to solve perfectionism you must do is decide what is your goal.

I really like this one, very important topic. I'd like to see more talks like this. I run into overthinking and perfectionism all the time throughout the creative process. And your use of ChatGPT in this one was cool.

I always prefer organic mixes rather than "perfect" mixes where you can hear every instruments separated. It's like going at a restaurant and eating something with all the ingredients separated. that's why older tracks or albums have charm, because it was not over-mixed. For exemple, in metal music, nowadays, they all sound the same, in the 90's/early 2000's, each band had its sound, imperfect but a sound that you could recognize and be enchanted by it. The most important is the feelings. But for "success", nowadays, you have to fit in a box, and this box is "perfect sound".

As an experiment I gave an AI one of my journal entries and asked it to identify cognitive distortions (which is something you learn in therapy). It did a good job so I asked it to suggest more reasonable beliefs to replace the distorted beliefs. It did well with that too. Kind of a convenient reality check if you're in a bad mood.

This was a brilliant idea! I would have listened to this for another hour!!! Brilliant! I grew up with hippies original hippies people who trail blazed back in the early days when the happy movement was just starting .. A lot of what it was discussed in this video is very much what hippies have been saying for many years now .. Stop thinking and reflect on yourself first. All problems start with you as you are the common denominator in your life. Self reflection is so important it’s a core aspect of meditation because the only way that you can sit in silence with yourself is if you’re at peace with yourself when you can only do that through self reflection! And it comes in many arts and forms ..

None of my finished Trax are perfect. The cult of done has to be applied. I try for CD -9 LUFS without baking the Trax. I don't always get there, but im not doing loudness wars at the risk of warping my music. I know instinctively when its time to wind up a Trax before I lose my enthusiasm with it

I didn't know you could have a proper conversation with chat gpt! I guess the clues in the name... I think you're absolutely right. More gear just gives me too much to think about. I think I fell into the trap of thinking I needed more to achieve what I wanted to do when I first started but am now starting to realise I already had most of the tools I needed right under the hood. Less, is definitely more.

Love this. I find asking AI advice is like asking a very clear-headed, smart friend... most of the time. Often it comes up with things I hadn't thought of which is useful.

😂 Best friend found.....Ah sorry this didn't sound too friendly. What I mean, I would agree that it might help to hear your own opinion and thoughts replayed in different words, though in the configuration you are using it, it seems to be the perfect echo chamber. I would be interested, how it works differently, if you tell it that it also should always question your thoughts and come up with a more convining theory, or similar...

Instead of a time limit, something that might also help is bouncing. I've already seen some videos about committing to something. That way, you're not tempted to keep tweaking the sound. So just bounce it out as audio, and if necessary, you can still tweak the audio, which gives you fewer options. You can keep the MIDI and simply deactivate the whole channel chain to save CPU, in case you're unhappy with the audio later and want to change it. Skrillex, for example, is someone who apparently bounces a lot. There's an interesting interview with Afrojack on the XLNTSOUND channel where he casually mentions this in passing.

I thought pretty early in the video, if you are new to a new toy, then the flow comes automatically. So my thought is, to not to understand some of them toys. Like, I have a lot of granular stuff here and they sound lovely, but I don´t understand the most of them, so I´m not forced to solve any problems, just go forward. Otherwise if an oscillator is not perfect in tune here, I have to set up again and record the entire line again. Yeah yeah, that slows me down. Damn modular VCOs hey.

The more problems you solve, the more proficient and skillful you become. But, the important part is that you're ACTUALLY solving those problems and not just moving on to the next track or buying a new tool whenever you get stuck. This means sometimes you have to slow down or break the process up into more steps, especially when you're trying to learn and improve.

Problem solving on its own can get you in the flow state if you allow yourself to struggle. It is fine and part of the process. Some problems are really hard, but having the mindset of "for sure I will find a way to deal with" makes it more enjoyable. Overcoming them makes grow so much more than just avoiding it.
