I"ve been wondering about the twist and lock hooks from Susan Bates and I'm so glad you did this review! In theory the hooks seem like they would be very convenient. However, for the price, I'm not sold on them. I doubt if I would ever use the yarn cutter and I don't typically use dk yarn that may call for the smaller hooks but I do agree with you wholeheartedly that Susan Bates could have done better on the aesthetics for these hooks! A pretty hook is always nice to work with and beauty shouldn't overlooked. It's part of the experience. This why we crochet! We want to make pretty things and we want to work with pretty things! Great review!

Thank you for your honest review. I prefer Clover because they are so very ergonomic. I might try this set just to see if that fat handle improves comfort and therefore more time stitching. Sometimes I wonder if I should have invested in the soft handle Susan Bates because the hook shaft is longer on them than on the Clover hooks.

Thanks so much for your review. Really liked the detailed way you visited all the features. I think these sets might also be good to carry when you travel by air. Will need to double check with airport security rules, but these may be permissible to carry in the cabin on board planes - as it’s a new product, we will need to check with airline security. Also solves the problem of carrying scissors on board flights. 👍

Should travel well in a small pouch. TSA does allow scissors with 4” blades or smaller, but you never know when they will arbitrarily decide to confiscate them.

Agree I’ve been using Susan Bates for over 60 years. Definitely could have made them prettier and too expensive. But I need them for my hand health. UPDATE: They feel great in my knife holding hand and I find the shaft is fine and doesn’t interfere with stitching. To remove the hooks or cutter, I found pushing down towards the inner spring and then turning makes for easy changing. God bless!

That's a great review! My thought is, I'm losing some of the length of the hook at the top because it is inserted into that holder. Even when you put your black handle ergonomic hook next to that one in the video, you could tell the difference in the length and I use that length a lot when I crochet. Also, I am a pencil hold crocheter and that just looks like way too much bulk to hold in my hand. Furls did not work for me so this probably would not either. I love my Susan Bates black handle ergonomic

I prefer the mixed inline taper like the amour or the hero hooks but i have noticed that some yarns work better with either an inline or taper. If i am working on a project and the yarn starts behaving badly, like splitting, dropping loops or sticking under the hook, i switch hook type and usually the problem is solved. I am probably going to get a smaller pack with an I-9 (my home hook) simply because these look pointier than usual and i like a nice point.

Great review. I was thinking the same thing about the finishing and polishing of the handle before you even brought it up. I expect better of Susan Bates. I'm also curious how the twist lock will last before the plastic wears down and becomes loose. I think something like a stainless-steel screw in hook might be longer lasting and secure. Hi Bonnie, this is a very interesting topic. Thanks for sharing. I have always used the tapered hooks from Boyle, and I am a pencil gripper. I can not get comfortable with holding the hook like a knife. The ergonomic grip (the rubber around the handle of the hooks) is too uncomfortable for me. Even after 40 plus years of crocheting, I like my old fashion hooks, 😀. I have people asked me if my hands ever get tired using the hooks in a pencil-grip position, the answer is no, not once. Knife-gripping makes my wrist hurt and become stiff. This is an awesome piece of information you have provided, and your opinion is very welcoming. Have a blessed day. 🙌

You have to find a place to put your extra crochet hooks so they don’t get lost. And these are ugly. I like and use Susan Bates hooks. I’d rather just stand them up in a cup like I do now - fully assembled and ready to use. Now, on the other hand I do see the point of interchangeable circular knitting needles. Those make sense.
