In this video, I show a good 6 volt generator's outcome with the motor test. It is a quick and easy way to tell if your generator has the potential to produce current. As always, remember to work safe and use personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and gloves. Since this procedure can produce electric sparks, remember to keep all flammable liquids, fumes, and materials away.

Thanks for the clear demonstration and explanation. I am gonna try this tomorrow on my 1950 Plymouth 6 volt + ground Autolite generator that I just rebuilt. This should do the trick!

I think you are missing something in the video. It seems to skip. To get the Field Excitation, you need +6 ground on the G terminal of the Generator and -6 volts on the Field terminal. Applying -6 volts to the Armature terminal will create spin. This can be done on the bench with a battery and jumper cables. I tried to follow your video to the letter, but nothing happened. I then did the steps above as I first mention, and the Generator ran. I know that your end result is what you expected, but I could not get that to work.

If the battery is connected to the tractor, the positive 6v will indeed be connected to the generator case. That said, it is *always* worth checking ground side resistance.
