PERFORMING RELATIVE COMPRESSION WITHOUT AN AMP CLAMP

The compression test is meant to be the first check. If the compression looks good, you can quickly move on to investigate other potential causes. If the test detects a low cylinder, you should perform a manual compression test to verify the data and determine the faulty cylinder.
With a relative compression test, you can easily determine if all the cylinders in an engine have equal compression. This test is a quick check on compression that you can do without removing the spark plugs or glow plugs. It uses the starter motor current to determine the comparative compression values on all cylinders. The advantages of doing this test are that you do not need a pressure transducer/sensor to run the test, all you need is a scope and a current clamp and that you do not have to check each individual cylinder, all cylinders can be tested in one go.
The theory behind the relative compression test is that the amount of current required to turn over the engine while a cylinder is on its compression stroke will indicate how much the cylinder is compressing or leaking. This will information makes sense when you compare all the cylinders, as you can easily see if one is weaker than the others.
It is important to remember to prepare the vehicle for testing so that the engine will not start during cranking.

Just traded in my legend for a Snap-on triton D-10 because of your videos just for the scope. I purchased the intelligent diagnostics subscription in the mean time to familiarize myself with the scope. Gives you known good waves and where to probe to test. I understand the concepts but Would love a video talking about all the configurations you go threw a such as mirror form, rising edges, slopes, m.s. and stuff like that. Thanks for all the videos. It’s helped me on my journey. Especially with no communication issues.

Triggering off a coil is nice if you don't have a misfire counter. But if you have a misfire counter you can just hook to the battery using 1 channel and if there's a missing hump then you'll more than likely know you don't have compression in the cylinder that's misfiring. Same can be said if you have a misfire counter counting up for multiple cylinders.
@MasterAutomotiveTraining
@MasterAutomotiveTraining 2 года назад
Misfire counter will say what cylinder the PCM thinks is misfiring. This has bit me in the you know what before, because of this I make sure im synced so I don't misdiagnose.

Thanks for the videos they're so informative. I have a micsig and I guess we have a love hate relationship at the moment. My question is pertaining to the lead on the control wire. Is that same lead also connected to ground like the other channel connected across the battery. I'm not sure when I should be using a lead with just one probe or one that splits off into two probes. I hope that makes sense.
@MasterAutomotiveTraining
@MasterAutomotiveTraining 2 года назад
Thank you for watching! Each Channel lead will have a signal and ground lead. I double stack my grounds at the battery then each signal will be on different points. Just like a DVOM your scope measures the potential difference between the black lead and the blue, yellow, green, red lead. Does that make sense?

Hi, great video as well. I have one question. I have Sato1004 and i dont know how switch off automotive mode in this scope. Thats mean I have all time Cam and crank measure on from last auto test, and i dont know how switch off channel to normal scope work(basic). Best regards

Me puede hacer un video, más fácil sin estar tan complicado como dice, ya que esta es la forma correcta y más sencilla de hacer esta prueba sin pinza amperimetrica.

I'll say the only flaw with this video was you didn't show where you hooked up your leads on the oscilloscope itself. I'm new to oscilloscopes and you said 2 channels but I saw 3 hookups: 1 to battery neg, 1 to battery pos, and 1 to ignition coil. As someone that's new to scopes, this is confusing when you don't show exactly how you have EVERYTHING hooked up. Helpful video though
@MasterAutomotiveTraining
@MasterAutomotiveTraining Год назад
Hey buddy, welcome to the scope gang. At 1:11 my yellow lead is channel 1 connected across the battery. Channel 2 is my blue lead, connected to coil #1. Any scope lead will have a colored lead and a black ground lead. This is because the scope reads to potential difference between the two leads. Hope this helps.

Four! haha! Nice shirt by the way! Does that scope have the ability to AC couple?
@MasterAutomotiveTraining
@MasterAutomotiveTraining 2 года назад
Thank PJ, love the T-shirt! It does, it would have given me more defined waveform?
@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 2 года назад
@@MasterAutomotiveTraining yeah, try turning on AC couple, and then drop the voltage scale down to 5v. It will make the waveform taller and a little easier to see when you stretch it out.
@MasterAutomotiveTraining

Will I be able to use any scope to do this test ?
@arthurfricchione8119
@arthurfricchione8119 Год назад
Don’t you need to deactivate the fuel injectors? I have a Honda 3.5 and a Honda 3.0. Please let me know. I own your scope and don’t want to ruin it. Also on primary and secondary ignition do you need to use an attenuator? It doesn’t say anything on the scope when hooking up? Thanks for your help 👍
@Epochred
@Epochred Год назад
Would this provide enough definition if the cylinder only had a partial leak rather than a 100% leak?
@OscarSegundo
@OscarSegundo Год назад
typically you would want all humps equal, for a partail leak one hump might be shorter than the rest.
@karuchvz9305
@karuchvz9305 2 года назад
Did you use the attenuator to connect the coil wire?
@MasterAutomotiveTraining
@MasterAutomotiveTraining 2 года назад
Not on this one. Since this coil is intelligent the module is in the coil, I only needed to backprobe the PCM command to the base of the transistor, which is a square digital signal. If it was an older style 2 wire coil, yes I’d use an attenuator.
