Hi Sam. I'd add one caveat to something you mentioned towards the end of the video: while adding Farnesol, Citronellol, Citral, Limonene, Geraniol and others into your fragrance isn't wise if it doesn't contribute towards improving your fragrance, there IS a lot of value in buying these materials (at least in reference quantity) to learn about them. Like what these common naturals do. And it can help you learn about how other materials (especially naturals) might work. I've noticed that Linalool clashes with Cedar essential oils (all kinds, whether Cedrus or Juniperus), which helped me understand that Basil, Bergamot and Lavender might not necessarily be the best materials to use with natural Cedar essential oil. It's worth having an understanding of those common materials in order to be able to understand what's being discussed in perfumery forums, chats and books. Great video. I learned a bunch. Thanks! Cheers.

Hi Sam, live your videos. How come I smell a woody base like sandalwood in Gaultier Classique even though no wood is given in the notes anywhere? Could that be iso e super? Or what is your opinion? Thanks for all the good work here 🙏

Thank you Sam for the labels video. I also thought I could get close to a commercial perfume scent by buying the things listed on the label. I didnt know it was an allergens list. Hopefully you saved future $ mistakes like mine by offering this insight!

Hi SAM, At the end of the vdo you asked about interest in GCMS.Just wanted to ask what is/are PEAKS in GCMS data.How one reads it? Once again thanks for the vdo. 👍
@sammacer

In GCMS, peaks are spikes which occur on the graph which comes out of the machine. The area of the peaks corresponds to amount of raw material in the sample.

Hi Sam, I'm new to perfumery and I am wondering, what are the drawbacks of creating a perfume using only EO's and perfumers alcohol besides being limited in scents? How will that affect sillage, longevity etc? I'm thinking if I create the foundation using EO's and PA, then add a couple of aroma chemicals, that will be a simple way for me to begin making perfume? Thanks for your content btw, you saved me from buying over a hundred pounds of fragrance oils lol
@__JPH__
@__JPH__ 2 года назад
The aroma chemicals I am considering are: Dihydromyrcenol, hedione, vanillin, rose givco, labdanum, ambrofix 10%, ethylene brassylate, galaxolide 50 and iso e super.
@sammacer
@sammacer 2 года назад
Hi Jack. In fact, usually you want to do the opposite: mostly ACs and a few naturals. This is because ACs smell cleaner and have better performance in general, while too many naturals can end up smelling very herbal. The raw materials you’re purchasing all look good, though btw, Labdanum is a natural and rose givco is technically a base, which is a blend of ACs rather than a single one

@@sammacer Thank you! The EOs I ordered arrived today and I see what you mean, a lot of them have a very broad spectrum of notes, so when you blend multiple they smell quite dirty and earthy. When my ACs arrive I will see how they impact the relationship that the EOs have together, for example I want to see how Iso e super works with vetiver/benzoin EOs, I am hoping it will smooth the fragrance out and add some clean musky depth. Time will tell I guess.

Good luck! Try experimenting also with using a few synthetics and just one natural

@@sammacer you are 100% correct, I’ve ordered more synthetics. Think the EOs were money wasted :( oh well

First I want to thank you for your content, I highly appreciate it. I have some ideas or requests for future videos. Could you please teach us: 1. How to make Fragrances for candles? 2. How to make fragrances for soaps? 3. How to make fragrances for shampoos? and even possibly how to make fragrances for cosmetics such as body butters or moisturizers. Once again THANK YOU SO MUCH!
@sammacer
@sammacer 2 года назад
Thank you! My channel is focussed on fine fragrance because that’s what I do myself, but you can apply all of the same principles to a different base. Any time I use perfumers alcohol, simply try replacing it with your cosmetic base!

@@sammacer For being more specific I don’t know what carrier is used for candle fragrance oils, assumingely some type of oil. But if you can share some basic stuff like what carrier is used specifically for candles and maybe proportions aroma-chemicals used for candle formulas I would highly appreciate it. Once again thank you for your content it is priceless for me :)

Is it possible to find out formulas for old discontinued perfumes? My holy grail would be the original recipe for Diorissimo by Edmond Roudnitska. Not to make money out of it, I’d just really love to know.
@sammacer
@sammacer 2 года назад
In general, no. In order to truly recreate something close you would need a GCMS analysis in combination with an experienced perfumer.

I had a quick look on perfume parlour and they seem to have a clone of it. Cannot guarantee how close it is though but may help you keep the old scent in your collection!

If I'm building a new accord for example, could be a fantasy accord that I'm not familiar with, example could be mineral notes or lava or even a woody note I'll have a look on TGSC on there you can also find a long list of suppliers as well. Also even simply just looking up chemical constituents of a specific item rose as a basic example. As far as the the ingredients go best to keep the allergens to a bare minimum, there are a lot of people that are allergic to fine fragrance. Especially coumarin ane Eugenol. Benzyl Benzoate is a good solvent / fixative, can be used medicinally too for scabies.
@sammacer
@sammacer 2 года назад
Yep - once I was working at a perfumery and some one came in asking for a fragrance without one of the allergens. TGSC is a great resource!
