Nice and informative review as always, just ordered one, it really looks to be winner for the price, hopefully I’ll get decently centered copy. I love how compact it looks and the weight it’s still reasonable for an all-metal “walk around” lens 😊

I took the plunge with this lens (version 2), thanks to Dustin's review. I have to say, Dustin's review is 100% spot on. My sample is maybe a little more uniform in sharpness. The only real flaw, same as Dustin noted, is flare can get pretty bad in some situations, even on cloudy days. I haven't tried the lens hood/filter holder yet, but I'll give that a try next time to help manage the flare. I also have the 12-24 GM, but my goal with this lens was to always have a small/light UWA in the bag (and that could also take screw-on filters), and I think for that purpose, it is money well spent.

Very nice review! I used to own the Samyang AF 14/2.8 which wasn’t that sharp towards the edges even stopped down. The Pergear seems better in that regard! Not an option for me though, as I purchased the Viltrox AF 16/1.8 earlier this year.

I have the manual version of Samyang 14mm f2.8 for Pentax K mount. It did ok on my Pentax K1 full frame. Since I switched to Sony. I am using it in manual mode with an adapter and I am not happy with the image quality at all. The lens is not sharp and stopping down does not heal much either. The Pergear 14 seems to be the answer. But you brought up the lens I was considering (Viltrox 16) before I saw the Pergear. How do you like the Viltrox? I am interested in the results wide open or f2.8.

To confirm : as it's a manual focus, it's not a focus by wire right ? so even if disconnected from the sony, you could focus ? (eg if you adapt it on other bodies)

Hmmm, the Pergear is every bit as sharp, and if filtering is a priority, it might be a better option.

I would think this would be a great 21mm equivalent lens for an APS-C sensor, assuming the lens is not too wavy in its sharpness.

I bought one based partly on this review. I got a real dog of a unit. Firstly they sent me a V1, where the listing said V2. Secondly the focus is way off. I can't get distant background in focus at all, and to get edge to edge focus at 10 yards I have to stop down to f8. Also at f4 it's a stop or two darker looking than my Sony PZ 16-35 f4 lens at f4. So I was really let down. I really want it to work because I don't know of another 14mm that takes filters. So I may roll the dice and try again in hopes they don't try to slip me an older model again. It was on the Pergear Amazon page.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Amazon only gave me the option to return. And now the MkII isn’t available. I’m fairly sure they ran out and tried to slip me a MkI, hoping I wouldn’t notice. I’ll eventually get another when they come out again. Unless you want to sell me yours LOL!

I do deal with that - particularly in the text review. I would say it is always accurate, but it is often interesting.

Christoffer Frost showed a lot of fringing with this lens and a lot of ghosting and flaring. But you don't seem to have those issues. Is this because of unit variation and poor QC? Or is it differences in your methodology as reviewers?

I show a lot of ghosting and flaring as well. I didn’t see a lot of fringing, however.
