Perhaps Eduard should go back to the “old” decals in their kits? Just saying’.

What I learned (and mostly remember) from building nine (count 'em 9) 1/48 scale Great War planes by Eduard. Reviewing this video reminds me never to try even simple arithmetic on line. To clarify and correct; I've built 4 Allied Eduard kits, 5 German Eduard kits and there are 9 in the stash--a fair number of those are, of course SE5a's . I must have given away a few Aurora kits as I could only find 3 in the stash, 2 Gotha Bombers and a wildly over sized Fokker EIII.

Lovely collection there Mark, beautiful work. I share your pain regarding rigging. while I have no experience with EZ Line, I do have some experience with Uichi rigging thread. I'm not knocking the product, as it looks great once attached, but getting to that point can be, to term it politely, Character Building 😝. I may not comment regularly, but always enjoy your point of view and your content 🍻

Thank you Dean; your comments are most appreciated. EZ Line is fickle, at least that's been my experience over the years. Sometimes it works like a charm.. my rigging Zen must be working..and other times it's just a darn nightmare. No Zen then. Cheers!

Great video Mark. That’s a lovely collection of Great War aircraft you have there. I have built one kit involving Eduard’s new decals. Their boxing of the Hasegawa B-25. Not my favorite build and I absolutely hated the decals. Now luckily for me I have a dual boxing of their Zero so it’s nice to hear about what I have to look forward to. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂. Have a great rest of your week, my friend. Oh and Maureen Dunlop turned out great. Looks just like the magazine cover.

Pilots, 👍😎Fighter planes look incomplete to me when there's nobody home. And triply so with these open cockpit types. With dyslexia having been mentioned, I'll say that building model airplanes actually helped me overcome it, way back in the 1960s. I've only rigged two or three ww1 planes, more effort than I was up to doing.

Beautiful collection Mark, I've watched some videos on those new decals, I would have to try them before I can give my opinion, but they looked a bit tricky, 😎👍👍

Thanks Tom. Yeah, I watched a couple of model building masters apply those decals and it looked easy for those guys. For me.. well, I just don't know--I suppose I'll have to give it a try some day, but the last thing I need is to add any more models to my stash.

Nice collection, Mark! There's some real fan(atic)s of the new Eduard decals out there, but from what I've seen, the question is this: Are they worth the trouble? And I think the answer, for the broader market anyway, is that they they are not. Except for the most finicky of rivet-counters, I think they're more trouble than they're worth, and using them risks turning a nicely-built and painted kit into a disaster. I'd rather apply a bit of Micro-Sol on regular decals to get that 'painted-on' look.

I agree Steve. The "old" style decals in the Eduard kits worked just fine for my needs with a bit of Micro-Sol. I watched a couple of modelers on YT apply the new style and yes they looked great, but as I watched the finicky process I said... that's not for me... over my pay grade. Cheers!

@@markfrommontana Same here. How's Montana these days? Centuries ago, I used to slide down to Billings for Pats/Bighorns games now and then... We always had fun.

How come it is always "apples and oranges" why never okra and rutabagas? 🤔😉

Perhaps because most folks actually eat apples and oranges? ;)

Very good stuff, there's not enough WWI kits on youtube. Do you have Eduard's 1/48 Sopwith Camel in your stash, it's a couple of years old tooling. I have several, but haven't built any yet. Concerning Peter Oxley's Zero review, I have built the kit and don't agree at all. It has a very good fit, only thing that was fiddly, was the landing gear assembly, which was not good engineering. He seems to build only kits that have near perfect fit, so he has a tendency to nitpick about everything. You build these demanding biplanes, so you would have no issues with a newly tooled Eduard monoplane. These so called new Eduard decals are digitally printed in-house, they're not traditional silk screen decals. They are much, much cheaper to make, so that's the reason why they switched making them in-house. I have you used the new style, it is possible to peel the carrier film, if the decal has adhered properly, it's quite easy, by just using a brush and some water. Some use mineral spirits and dissolve the film. But it is not necessary to remove the film. Although the carrier film looks bad on the sheet, if you apply a final matt varnish on top, you can't really see it, it will look just like any traditional decal. If I were you, I wouldn't be wary of the new decals, the whole issue has been overblown in my opinion.

Thank you for that useful information. I have 2 Eduard Sopwith Camel kits in 1/48; one is actually a reboxing by Revell (kit # 03906) and the other is Eduard kit # 8057, with Roy Brown's markings. I used the decals in the latter for my Aurora Camel build and have yet to get a set of replacement decals. I suspect we have similar opinions about Peter's in-box review videos--his build videos are much rarer. Near as I can tell he doesn't actually build many kits these days although he has strong opinions about a lot of them. I have about a dozen WWII planes in my stash; mostly Tamiya or Eduard, but I don't know when I'll return to that era.. I have way too many Great War kits to tackle! All the best and thanks for your comments.

I agree that it's best to concentrate on the kits that one find most enjoyable. I'm mostly a 1/72 builder, and sold all of my bigger kits, I saved only the biplanes. Eduard will release a 1/72 Albatros D.III, I'm really excited about that. I forgot to specify that I meant the new 2021 tool Sopwith Camel, which is a great kit. Here are two ways how to peel of the decal film. The first one happens to feature that new Sopwith Camel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_8_ozauxgdE.htmlsi=KwiXdhwWmmOGV3rU And the brush method: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mmLTH7_mCIc.htmlsi=n1LAh5FQ6sNOMMCy But as I said earlier removing is optional. The kita are great however the decals suck. I have no problem with the scale representation at this scale cord and span and rib detail are good. These aircraft are quite small in real life and 1/32 would be a better representation given at 1/48 they scaled in the canvas texture and sagg . If you're doing profi pack the rigging should be supplied. My verdict so close Edward but so far. But great your doing these examples of a by gone age .
