@@FillmoCinema Yeah, certain movies just have an impact, movies like this, or "Come And See", or other films that are more visceral emotional experiences and try to get the viewer to 'feel' a certain emotion can be extremely powerful and draining at the same time.

I think the smoke, which was so thick in those days it affected visibility, represented how John Merrick's humanity was obscured to most people by his physical appearance.

@@FillmoCinemayes, it is exploitative. You are engaging in the exact thing lynch was criticising so you can get more views. Hypocritical. Just like the carnival handler from the beginning of the film, you depict the elephant man as shocking and ugly to get attention.
