DCC is one of several games I find super interesting but have yet to play. Love learning more about it on this channel, and your videos here make me hopeful that the ttrpg sphere on YT will gradually become more than D&D!

I hope so too! I think D&D will always be on top but as it expands I believe more people will discover alternate RPGs that can be super fun and might be the better fit for some groups!

What I like about DCC is that it implicitly recognizes that the Judge makes their own world, and does not need "permission" from a sourcebook to do anything. Rulings over rules.

This is a "Planetary Romance" or "Sword & Planet" fantasy setting like E.R.Burrough's "A Princess of Mars"/Barsoom series. In the Barsoom novels, Mars had an old old civilization that had been on the decline for thousands of years, they had swords and energy guns along with flying ships.

Seems cool. Sci fi mixed fantasy can be hit or miss, but it's worth trying.

A setting or not a setting? An interesting question. For many years I ran D&D with no setting other than the one implied by the TSR rules - namely the default classes, races, Alignments and monsters. Greyhawk emerged slowly through various published modules and it was a long time before there was enough details to qualify as a "setting" the way we understand the term today. Some of my favorite memories are of games played prior to adoption of a real setting. Today I wouldn't think of not having a clearly defined setting. Expectations have certainly changed.

Personal favorite setting for DCC is Hubris. I can't find a reasonably priced hardback sadly since I discovered it far too late

I've got Purple Planet as a MCC resource and am loving what it has to offer so far 💜 The only struggle so far is the difference in Artifact Checks vs the Rune Activation the book offers. Do you have any ideas or advice on how to best flavor the Tech of that book to the Tech of Terra AD?

Is dcc worth playing at higher levels? I wanted to run a AD&D module, and since my group are newer players (and haven’t tried older d&d) I thought dcc would be good with more streamlined rules.

I haven't ran past 3. Levels only go to 10, but I hear by 4-5 player characters are pretty powerful.

MCC: Not related to Purple Planet any more than DCC. Purple Planet is John Carter of Mars (red planet, get it?). DCC has always been kind of a side quest. Some major players always loved Metamorphosis Alpha aka Gamma World. They always wanted to use free license D&D-esque rules to revive Gamma World. That's why DCC has always been extra unhinged. So DCC and MCC are basically the same game. Just like D&D and Gamma World used to be sister products. Purple Planet can more or less be played as DCC or MCC. And John Carter of Mars is an equal influence on both. The author of John Carter also wrote Tarzan. Is Tarzan more eaily converted to DCC or MCC? Flip a 2-sided die.

🤔 7yrs later we review an out of print product.... Ive got 2 unopened sets still. Think I'll put them up on the eBay this week.
