Broke my heart when those boys called periods a disease

This is why education is important. When I say education I don't mean just learn mathematics and what not, but learning about REAL LIFE. Unfortunately my mother also grew up having to think that she needs to be ashamed of her period and she too used cloths.

Seeing this makes me realize how lucky i am. I’m Indian and my mom talks about this to me so casually and comfortably. I’m in America so that most likely why, but it breaks my heart seeing girls the same age as me being taught to see their period as a sin

When my periods first started my mother was on her work in her office... I was in home with my Dad and literally that time he was the one to tell me about periods and tell me how natural they were in a girl's life and also how to use a pad... Later I talked with my mother on phn after she was free from her meeting... I see my father as an ideal man and of course he's my best friend... Definitely we need more people like my father.... It breaks my heart that my mom yelled at me for being shameless when i loudly said i dont feel good because of periods in front of my family.... She always thinks period is something you should not talk about men as if they dont know it.... I wish parents would be a bit more forward and talk about this openly with their kids In most parts of India

In Kerala, most school and colleges have pad vending machine. Even men buying pads to his friends or family. It is nothing to be a shame. It is protecting our ladies from their toughest time.

Neither we need a patriarchal society nor matriarchal society , we need a society where men and women can understand eachother's problem and encourage each other and there is no ground of inequality in between them .

Watching this short docu makes me feel really sad. To be raised in a society where having a period (a natural experience that all girls go through from as early as 10), is seen as SHAME, a DISEASE, a SICKNESS, a TABOO, is beyond frustrating and soooo sad. It’s good that this is on RU-vid. Not everyone can get Netflix. But most do have access to RU-vid but smartphones. Even a farmer in rural India can watch information on the smartphones.

my mom,is fully educated...but still she believes some of myths like i cant go in mandir and i cant wash my hair during periods...education is a great solution,but its literally embedded in everyones mind ,what i want is atleast we dont pass on these myths to next generation.

My mom was progressive with regards to teaching her sons about a woman’s period. In fact I remember being sent to Walgreens to buy her pads on many occasions, it never was (and shouldn’t be) an embarrassing experience.

I literally can make a whole presentation in front of my class without getting shy and nervous and im a boy. Those kids are not educated at all and they don't know what period is, they think it's a disease.

This is heartbreaking. Women and girls have endure so much pain and abuse all around the world...

Once I was buying a pad and asked the shopkeeper to just give it to me without wrapping it as I hate it when they wrap it like I am buying some illegal items or something. And he gave me a look as if I am carrying drugs and started laughing so I taught him a lesson . And the fact that I was a 12 year old kid at that time and he was a fully grown 45 year old man, clearly tells us that knowledge does not come with experience

As an indian girl who grew up in the city and never had to go through these problems, this is absolutely inspiring. The struggle that these young girls have for something that was never a bother to me really opens my eyes. There is a lot that needs to change and the taboo around menstruation in my country needs to go away. This makes me proud to see a positive step in the right direction. We need to start conversation and educate ourselves. Thank you Netflix.

This situation was a common thing in my days. Parents were shy to educate their girls on menstruation. It's a hush hush topic. The only saviour were the schools where biology was compulsory and female teachers came in handy to teach girls on sanitary hygiene. Such ignorance. Thank God society is much more open now

During my biology class ,once i ask my bio sir about menstruation. I was so normal and then utter silence came in class. My sir answered it perfectly and also told that most of people do not want to talk on that. Really, i was later praised by everyone for asking question My classmates knew from inside that menstruation is not a shame but as you know you need guts to speak on that. And i guess i developed it in some of them.😌

India is a diverse nation with lots of culture, colour and perspectives. There are women who shudder to say the word period and independent single moms who do face adversity but will raise stronger women. I am an Indian. I have lived my whole life in India. But not even my Grandma feels embarrassed to talk about periods. I just wanted to say this cos I felt bad being in india for a sec.. And then I was like this is our country. We are diverse but we have the capability to help each other out. And there is nothing to feel ashamed of.

As a girl/women, we should not transfer the myths to our next generations and have a open talk about menstruation. Women should support women. Automatically, men will.

My mom never actually taught me about periods, all the knowledge I got was from school. All my mom told me is that I shouldn’t go to the temple or touch anything that belongs to it when I’m on my period.

Nowadays condition is getting better but I am shocked that there are still places in India where people treat periods as disease

Its blowing my mind. Less than 10% wearing pads?? Iam 30, from Indonesia and im from a very small village. But iam glad in my village period is not a taboo. We are all wearing pads even my moms generation wear pads since their young age. My mom didn’t exlpain me why is period happen, because i guess she herself didn’t really know. But i got the explanation when i was in junior high school. we can always find pads sold at school. me and my friends were talk about it a lot since youang age, how we got cramps, the day we flooded. And we always had pads everyday in our bag just in case another girl forgot to bring it on their day. Again iam from a very small village that you need to go 15km to get ice creams 😢 so watching this really blowing my mind.

I met the director of this film, and let me tell you she and her small crew worked tirelessly to make this beautiful film. This is a must watch.

I am so proud of my father and mother. I didn't know about menstruation. When I was 11 years old, we girls had a workshop in school in which they taught us about it. I told my mom about it. She gave me more information about it. And my father even talked about it. He told me what all things girls should do when they were on period. When I was 12 I started bleeding. I went home. I told my parents that my periods started. They were so happy that they called my uncle, aunt, grandparents and told about it. My brother didn't know about it. But I told him about it. Whenever I get cramps, my father and brother helped me alot. We talk about these in class as well. We learnt more about it in 8th class. We were having online classes and I was so proud that boys of our class were taking step to talk about this. We should never be ashamed of talking about Periods. Its natural. Girls should talk about this. And boys should help girls whenever they face this problem.

I'm from India. In my school, usually if teachers have to make some announcements they do it during assembly time. During assembly all the students staffs and teachers will be present. But whenever it is something related to periods(like not disposing pads properly) female teachers ask boys to return to their class and every male staff and teacher go back to staff room. Only female teacher and girls will be present. Also they won't talk abt it with mic. Bcs boys will hear. I honestly want this to change.

Pads should be cheap so everyone can afford it

The problem is people think "menstruation is a problem or a disease". Surely menstruation is annoying in many ways for us but that is just a part of system of our body. Just like digestion , respiration , its a part of reproductive system. Education is the only way to remove such stigmas and make people aware of its biological aspects

In my 10th the biology tr said that cloth is more hygienic than pad. and she advice to use cloth and avoid pad. Pad is dirty. Using of pad lead to bacteria infection and uterus cancer 😐our school is well developed and she taught me this type of shit.

Everyone should watch the movie Pad Man. It does a pretty good job of explaining the taboo of period in India.

What a documentary!!!! wow!! I am an international student in Canada and during my course in Human sexuality, each student has to watch this documentary and made reflective writing. I'm blown by the fact that the Canadian system is following Indian documentary to set an example and educate their youth with such an immensely educational documentary. I think this system should be followed in India as well. As just showing this one documentary will change a lot. A lot to say but I have to write my reflecting writing so just this much for know.

It’s a shame how a woman’s biological process gets labelled as evil and “should not be talked about” by the masculine society we live in today. I hope women across all villages get access to pads so that they don’t contract harmful diseases. Women have always been the stronger gender because unlike men, they chose to face their problems silently. But it’s time for a change and the awareness need to spread. I hope this documentary reaches to every nook and corner of the country ❤️

Now I know 1st hand that this is a worldwide thing. I saw this w my grandma and she told me that in her teens she and other women from her town also referred to their period as an "illness." Thankfully, nowadays that mindset is part of the past in rural Peru

I think that sanitary pad ads also hold major role in depicting a completely different thing and a meaning. I am a boy and before my 8th class I only knew that there is a blue substance coming out of females body and when I asked my mom about this she ignored my question and asked me to complete my homework. I am so happy that my younger sister is aware about this topic and never hesitate to talk in front of anyone.

In these modern times not being allowed to go to the temple during periods seems like being stopped from doing things, but such traditions usually have reasons. In olden times there were no pads at all and getting up early in the morning to do the prayer activities and such may have been difficult for the women. Not to mention other tasks like going to get water from wells and all. From what my dad told me, there was a custom for women on periods to stay in a corner of the house and not roam around to work. Now such methods aren't practical but in those close-knit societies neighbors would help out with tasks like cooking so the women could rest.

I just can't see the guilty faces of the girls .really .....this is horrible.they should be taught not to feel guilty or dirty about it

As an indian my self, I would say this is very much true. What think is, these superstitions and stuff were made to give rest to women on their cycle. But the same are used as a stick to control us and make us feel shy of their normal cycles. The housework burden falls on women in most of the Indian families, and we are expected to wake up everyday and do pray to god before 6 in the morning. I think about it this way. By not going into the kitchen, we can rest. By not praying, we dont have to wake up in the morning. By not eating pickle, I can be more comfortable. But at the same time, I think the main essence of what these mean, ie ensuring women get plenty of rest, is long gone. But the plain believes still remain. That is, thinking that we are unpure or something. We were told, dont go to the kitchen, dont pray, dont eat pickle, but not , dont work today, u will need rest, dont wake up in the morning, sleep well, dont eatt pickle, it will make ur period worse. If we were told like this, maybe we wouldn't feel this way about periods. In south India, when a girl gets her first period, she is made to sleep on a mat on the ground and not allowed to come out. But the point was to actually give her rest for a week or two, because it's her first period. The mat was because, in olden days, others used to sleep on the floor, but the girl with the period was offered a mat that's set up above rice grains, so it will feel like a mattress and she can sleep comfortably. A girl that age will already be doing half the house hold work, so by not allowing her to come to the room, she is given plenty of rest. She is fed iron rich foods and help her cope up. But all these are lost , the main point *to give them rest* was lost. But the shy remains. I am not saying we should continue this superpositions or that I am praising them, I am saying we lost the main essence and point behind these ideas. (An indian pickle is made with lot of chilli powder and salt, which when consumed during period , makes my cramps worse) All being said, I am still against the cluelessness of Indian men on this subject and why mensuration was kept a big secret from them. I can find absolutely zero logic behind that and I think its stupid. As a part , I usually go to schools and tell them I want to talk to the kids, but they reject the idea when I said I want to talk with both boys and girls. Or maybe because I am still a student, and I look young. But still, even it is small, I am doing what I can do.

I love how they are not only helping and raising awareness related to menstruation and the use of sanitary napkins but also they are helping with the women unemployment in India to a large extent
