Spencer is amazing, but sometimes you just need to appreciate these songs the way they were originally written. This song also has my favorite interlude on the album, by the one and only Jake Bowen!
Ownership belongs to Bulb and NOT Sumerian Records actually, but I still have no ownership, yadda yadda.

I don't know about the hardworking aspect of that comment, but I like Spencer's vocals. I didn't for a long time and would only listen to the instrumentals, but then I learned to tolerate them, and then one day I just realized that they actually brought a lot to the band. I know it's different for everyone, but this is coming from someone who literally couldn't get into this band for a while just because of the vocals. Can't really imagine Periphery with anyone else.

I know this is mad old... But my thing is that I LOVE instrumental djent but I don't dislike djent with vocals. P2 and P3 are great with vocals. I just think that this album flows better without the vocals. The vocal patterns break up the janky instrumental lines too much. It's not that Periphery is better with or without vocals. It's that this album is better without

@thudunder I don't know about you, but it's no wonder Dream Theater asked Periphery to open their show in Budapest on the 17th February 2012: the DT guys have an eye for talent. Periphery isn't exactly my cup of tea vocal-wise, but they're nevertheless good. I can't wait to see them live, both bands I mean:D

What would be a solid step up from this after learning on guitar? Either in Periphery's catalogue or elsewhere within the technical metal fold? Something considered up a 'notch' in terms of challenge. Thanks!

Mac If you think this shit is harder than technical difficulties then you're one of those kids who try to play a song, they play it sloppy as fuck and they think they "learned" it.
@xxczerxx
@xxczerxx 8 лет назад
Akis M Are you sure we're talking about the same song? Technical Difficulties by Racer X? There is literally nothing difficult about that song what so ever. The whole thing is in 4/4, there's no polyrhythms to work around, odd note groupings, strange scales, awkward chord shapes or intricate solos. I religiously use a metronome for learning other artist's music. I learned that song note for note a few years ago, it's "intermediate" at most. Truly difficult music would be the HAARP Machine's "the Escapist Notion" or Alan Holdsworth's "Funnels", not bloody Racer X. I don't know why you'd pick that anyway; Paul Gilbert's later solo efforts were far more complex, why would you pick a Racer X track?
@AkisM
@AkisM 8 лет назад
Lol, The escapist notion is difficult? You can't be for real. What's difficult about 16th palm muted riffs? Yeah, I like to listen to them too, but that's not what you call difficult. I think we have completely different definitions of what "difficult to play" is. Just because a song has signature changes or polyrhythms doesn't make it hard to play (and don't get me wrong i also enjoy signature changes and polyrhythms). Same goes for "awkward chord shapes". Now Funnels, sure we can agree there. I think you confuse songs you like with songs that are hard to play, and songs you don't like with songs that are easy to play. Common phenomenon.

@thudunder I hate internet arguments but I would really like to know what you based the "Spencer is one of the most hard-working and talented singers in the business" on. At best he sounds like your average singer/screamer for the entire "lets sing and scream" genre. Personally, I think his vocal tone is unpleasant regardless of his technical ability to manipulate his own voice (IE- "talent", which to me isnt all that impressive). IMO he doesnt fit this band at all.

Well, there are songs in the album that sound better without Spencer because he "forced" himself along the song, such as Racecar, All New Materials and so on. But there are songs that sound dull without his vocals; take Frak The Gods, Icarus Lives, Jetpacks Are Yes and Letter Experiment as examples. Maybe with the new album, he'll contribute to the songs more directly and manage to coalesce his voice with the instrumental effort. None the less, I respect the man and the band, Periphery FTW.

I think the question is not if the singer is talented or not. But if his way of singing/his voice fits with this music stil. The music itself is very complex itself and i think there is not so mutch space for a voice. And i must say that personally i don´t like clear vocals in core music for my ears it makes the music softer and that is irritating because the music itself is not "soft" in any way.

I love you Sponce, you're my all-time favorite vocalist. My blood boils whenever i hear of someone that dislikes you. To them i say: "Satellites", and their opinion has a "sudden change" (Hasn't failed me yet). But sometimes when you just wanna chill, and not get "Too into it" (Eargasms and the likes of it), I gotta go for the instrumental. Homework with Spencer has never, nor will it ever work. I just get too distracted by his mesmerizing voice. But to all who dislike Spencer: Give him another listen, all people who have said this opinion to me change it not long after. This has been my pro-Sponce rant. Thanks for listening, have a wonderful day!

He was good, if not iconic, for Periphery 1, slightly less good and a bit too poppy but still listenable Periphery II and I haven't been able to handle anything they have released after that. Periphery were my absolute fave band back in 2010-2012 but the poppyness of the vocals (eg: "mayahay" instead of "me" in Erised) has put me off listening to any of their new stuff. Not to say he is a bad vocalist at all, but I understand where the OG fans are coming from when they complain about the vocals - it's not really a fit for the heavyness of the music.
@LemonHDfilms1337

Guess it just comes down to preference. I really love everything about Modern Periphery. I've spent days listening to the entirety of their newest album, Hail Stan (on non-stop repeat).
