It's been a long time since I reassembled an engine but when I did I was sure glad plasigauge was around. It's such a simple concept but way accurate. Fun flying around mountain tops.

When torquing the connecting rod nuts, I noticed that one side of the nut is "normal" and the other has a smaller ring machined into it. Obviously, the normal side would hit torque first as it has more surface area than the "ring" side. I've searched online and checked my pics from the teardown but I'm coming up empty. Could you drop some knowledge please, Brian?

As I said in a previous video. Very interesting to watch these. Even though all engines are different...the similarities of the steps are very interesting to watch. I, to this day have never rebuilt the bottom end of an engine but hope to someday.
@greasyhandsauto-shaunbutte9726
I love that you’re human. I’m sure compressing 5 rings is a bit more difficult than the traditional 3. Nice work!

You should have said abundant not prolific. Try putting on the ring compressor before you drop the piston in the bore next time.

Good video, I have always wanted to rebuild an engine. Someday when I have a nice shop like yours. What is the building on top of the ridge?
@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 6 лет назад
That's for surveying purposes. It's used to triangulate locations in the valleys on either side of the mountain. It was just the cone/point, but with so many visitors they made up a little shack semi-enclosure below it too. That little building often sees about 100 visitors a day in the summer months. There's a log book in there to help people determine in/when folks go missing. There's usually a dozen or so rescue/death/missing person events per summer. I know there's at least 2 bodies on that mountain that are not yet recovered. If a lightning storm is hitting the top you can take refuge in the shack. I saw a male and female hiker descending the trail that night halfway between the shack and the saddle.

briansmobile1 I don't recall but the one was a 50's chev, the other was a 70's Ford. On the chev they mated it up with a custom bell housing and ran a 5 spd dodge tranny

I was scared when you rotated the engine without supporting the pistons from bottom, they could fall off. It happend to me reassembling a Porsche 911 engine, I rotated the engine on the stand and one piston decided to fall on the floor.. luckily nothing happend to the piston and the rings.. but it was scary! Porsche pistons and rings are expensive

There is no plastic in plastigauge. Plastic is being used as a verb here. Instead, it is just what it looks like it is - wax.

instead of using plastigauge i just tighten each rod and turn the crank to make sure smooth no play and no resistance as i rotate . but what the hell do i know right

@leebarnes655

Such as? Not really needing to do it on a fresh grind with new bearings? Do it like you want to - I only use it on used parts to find out where it is at currently. .003 and .005 undersize bearing shells are commonly available for tightening up a bottom end if you don't want to yank the crank for a grinding. And some would hoot and hollar about that while I still don't care what they think or say. Doing it just to show how to use it is worth doing when you are a you tube creator. Too many don't know about this tool, that's not good at all.
@Rhyno430
@Rhyno430 6 лет назад
Lee Barnes my, you get awfully defensive about a simple comment. You also seem to assume I don’t like the stuff, why would you assume that? People like to bitch about it, especially in my area, don’t know why, don’t care why, simply whenever it’s talked about around my area, someone bitches about it, or anywhere I’ve seen it mentioned really. My theory is they’re all racers and frequently blow up engines and want something to bitch about.
@leebarnes655
@leebarnes655 6 лет назад
Just didn't understand your simple comment. No assumptions made here, just a possible angle guessed at and chased a bit, more because I wanted to go there than what I read. Thankfully I haven't run into that particular crowd but I have next to nothing in common with people that can waste money on racing other than some HP books for light reading. I would be in your camp with don't care why they could bitch about it. It's not lying about anything, if they can't keep a bottom end in it, that's all on them and their quest for RPM. Only thing I've run into is a lol snarky shot about maybe using a micrometer for that instead and of course that's a pretty silly waste of time when this stuff has been doing fine as is almost from day one. 45 years ago when I cut my teeth this stuff was already older than dirt. I dismissed it as obviously he hasn't been around too very much. I will use a micrometer but mostly to check for an egg shaped rod journal and a nearest undersize guess.

STP motor oil treatment will do just as well, my mentor used it all the time before they thought to dye it red, call it something else and overcharge like the dickens for it. While I moved onto white lithum grease in the handy squeeze tube and I don't have sticky drops of STP on the floor anymore. Or my hair, pants, shoes,...
@Limeayy
@Limeayy 6 лет назад
Lee Barnes why white lithium for assembly lube?
@leebarnes655
@leebarnes655 6 лет назад
Lime, first tube came in the engine kit so I tried it and fell in love with how it stays put exactly where you put it and never drips out and away like the STP type does. The tube said right on it - Engine Assembly Lube, blue and white about the size of a tube of caulking with handy screw on cap with nozzle. I don't even have to touch it. Later on I found out what it actually is, same stuff GM put on the door hinges and latches for decades on end, Bet I could go out to the 62 corvair and dig some out now, the stuff really stays put.
