Permaculture is a design philosophy and practice that aims to create sustainable human settlements that work in harmony with the ecosystem. It's a contraction of the words "permanent" and "agriculture", and is based on the idea that cultures can't survive without a sustainable agricultural base and land use ethic.
Permaculture draws inspiration from nature to develop farming systems that are resilient, productive, and diverse. It also includes principles of ethical land use, recycling, renewable energy use, and low-impact living. The goal is to minimize waste, prevent pollution, and enhance biodiversity while producing food and using land in a sustainable, non-destructive way.
Permaculture can be applied in many fields, including regenerative agriculture, town planning, rewilding, and community resilience. The term was coined in 1978 by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren as an alternative to modern industrialized methods.
Permaculture is also based on three ethics: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Shares. These ethics are derived from commonalities of many worldviews and beliefs, and are shared by many people throughout the world.
