Gray water is typically any waste water that is used other than the toilet and kitchen sink water. Dark gray water is the same but inclusive with the water that drains from kitchen sink.
Nicholas Burtner is in Victoria, BC, Canada with the amazing Ann and Gord Baird on their off grid established homestead showing us a "dark" gray water gravity fed system that cleans water, yields vermicastings, worms, and waters trees lower in the slopes of the landscape.

What a cool setup! I've seen designs for wastewater sytems but it's something else entirely to see one in action.

Will shower gel and shampoo kill the worms?

I'm a little confused. ... in the winter how does this work? we have a grey water system for our shower.... but still bucket out the sink water... wouldn't the worms freeze? They burrow below the frost line.... would the system need to be below frost line as well?

I'm not too sure they have much freezing weather at any given time to be fretting about a survival of the worms. Besides that in a regular worm composting bin, not used for this purpose, if that weather matters worms will lay eggs that are made to survive the freeze which will compensate rather nicely for the lost ones once they hatch. Depends but can get 4-8 worms to one that died. Though a birth sac can like 20 babies just don't all survive. There are quite a few solutions though for a freeze survival in many types of worm bins. I learned on it through youtube. I prefer visual references when learn or make something.

Is it ok for tue mulch to be constantly damp? Any smell from decomposition of solid materials or from water

For people living in an urban/suburban setting, can this be installed in a semi-basement? What would you recommend in the modification so that it would save space? Thank you.

Looks and sounds like a great system, thank you for making this available! I have a question: what maintenance is required to keep it going? There must be some things to be done on a regular basis, like replacing the mulch, regulating the population of worms?.. I followed the link to the website and the guys have PDF booklets on how the system is constructed but nothing about maintenance there either. Could you please shed some light on that? Thanks!

How is the flow to each tree regulated? If they are not all at the same level how to you insure they get the amount of water you want? Looks like a neat system, but Id imagine the 1/4” lines are going to get clogged faster than a year.

Maybe not - there is fabric over the outlet in the worm box.
