@@LongcrierInProgress for real. Harris is about returning to the status quo with maybe some progress in limited areas. Mean while the orange man wants to be a literal dictator. The critique is not going to be the same thing. This is not a both sides issue.
Sunn is absolutely right to critic politicians regardless of their party affiliation and critiquing a politician is not an act of support for a rival politician. Criticizing politicians and their words, even the ones we intend to vote for or support, should be the norm and should be encouraged. Politics isn't red vs. blue and the goal isn't for your team to win. Politics is about deciding which candidates most closely represent your values, whose actions create a better place for you to live in, and who you think can be most influenced to act in favor of the people. The reality is that these people are not acting in our interests and we are voting for harm reduction and for what we feel is going to make the best conditions for change through advocacy and other means. You get politicians to act and change their views by critiquing them. If you disapprove of how Palestine is being treated and the US direct support of Israel's actions through weapons, say it at every opportunity. Make it an issue. Critic politicians who speak in favor of Israel's actions and who actively silence support for Palestine. Even when you want them to win. Make it a topic they can't afford to be stubborn about. Make it so that lipservice isn't sufficient and that action is what they are being judged by.
Excellent explanation. Hope it helps others understand what the fight is really about. Instead of fighting each other we fight together to make it better for all of us. I hate the violence that has been happening…There are way better ways to use our voices, hands and feet. Make our voices louder together. Use our hands to hold picket 🪧 instead of our fist to throw punches or pick up a weapon and use our feet to walk the picket lines and protest. WE ARE STONGER TOGETHER THAN APART…United we stand divided we fall 🫶🏻✊
What you wrote is common sense but it’s so lost on folks now. People have forgotten how we’re supposed to hold these candidates accountable & not turn a blind eye to the atrocities they commit & accept it. They’re supposed to be our representatives. But that only works in a democracy & the USA hasn’t been one for decades. It’s an oligarchy. And all this showboating from the RNC & DNC is purely for entertainment.
i’m replying bc i don’t have the time to read this whole comment right now, but i’m expecting more people to reply later so i can get a notification and read it later.
People have started standing politicians and expecting more from musicians than they do their politicians. People are holding Nicki Minaj and Dave Chappelle more accountable than they do Trump/Harris. It is so bizarre
I know this might sound weird but I actually use your videos to coincide with other videos to help me communicate with others since I'm on the autistic spectrum. So. I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you for your videos, time and passion.
I'm neurotypical, and I don't think your use and enjoyment of these videos are weird at all. They are informative and thought provoking. I wish more people would be open minded enough to truly listen and consider the knowledge gained here.
"Lost in equivocations" is right! Dishonest people love getting their opponent lost with endless comparisons, whatabouts, unrelated questions, playing dumb, & other attempts to avoid addressing their opponent's point. It makes having a discussion harder & we should be allowed to call out such bad practices without being accused of having a bias.
no one should be above criticism and critique, especially not a political candidate or actor. Otherwise we end up in situations where accountability becomes impossibility in the face of blind and deaf loyalty. Thank you for your willingness to engage and teach, looking forward to the next lesson.
O so glad I skipped the comments on the active / passive voice vid. I appreciated the example, took it on board for the social language lesson it IS and went on to work. Peeps need to welcome your gracious sharing and active examples. Makes sense to engage and comment on examples they see out in the wild themselves and maybe never thought of before, but stick to questioning what they don't get because their background isn't as deep as yours not getting all ranty and ravy over example used. I've learned and keep learning so much here. Thanks again!!
Yeah, I did a similarly, because I didn't have the emotional capital to tread water in the inevitable hate that'd taint the talks. I don't remember if I commented (I don't think I did), but I always appreciate Sunn for being strong and dignified without being needlessly nasty to naysayers. I know I shouldn't put him on a pedastal, but it's really hard when so many black men in my life are not like this. I'm doing the best I can to keep cross-checking though.... 😵💫
This was an incredible video. The perfect blend of moral power and sarcasm. You said more in 78 seconds than any of our politicians can say in any speech. Free Palestine. Free USA from the 2 party capitalist system. Power to the people everywhere!
Fair critique is important and the situation in Palestine is a key place that the democrats need it. Everything that is true is true at the same time and they shouldn't need to go through the process of idolization/devaluation if care is taken to see both good and bad at the same time
You know Sunn, I admit I have to watch your videos over and over. I try very hard to read between the lines, even you commented that my comments have nothing to do with your videos, its my perception. You are correct! What I love about you-the same time makes me crazy when you use figurative language combined with your sociolinguistic education. This is why I am hooked on your post. I have learned a lot from you, I have at times grieved for what we (whites) have done to POC over the years. Your education and passion is very loud and clear through your videos. You told me to stand for what I believe in and thank you for that. I expect you to be you. As an influencer, please don't ever stop educating us and keep challenging people like me. You ROCK!
Okay, I"m neurospicey but even I can tell this is definitely one of those times where I am to STFD-&-STFU. Commenting for engagement and to show appreciation for your educational style and the work undertaken to become an expert in your chosen field. I appreciate that you apply the law to everyone. Not just apply it to others while interpreting it for yourself and your friends.
Neurospicy catching up because I've been listening to videos without my reading glasses on to catch what what been laid down that I literally didn't see. Whew. That's a lot to roll over in my head. Commenting also for engagement.
RU-vid suggested this as a "For You" video, and I was so scared to open it. So worried about being exposed to one more starry eyed individual desperately clutching on to hope for deliverance and willing to exonerate all the wrong-doings of their preferred party. My brother, you did not disappoint! This 1.5 minute has won you a subscriber!
You are of, course, correct about the languge. I believe the cause for people not connecting on the context is due to two things. The first is simple, not all posts are seen by the same people so the fact one post is made on one candidate doesn't ensure they will see the other. The other is about the political context and the degree to which we accept the structural binary of the choice with which we are currently provided. The current system boils massively complex issues into a choice between candidate A or candidate B (Including what might be a desire to change that system). When both options share a position with which we disprove, it means showing our disapproval is more complex. One element is the "lesser of two evils" argument, which is simply a reality in a complex and imperfect world. But if we stop there, we will never end up with anything better than the lesser evil. So, how do we pressure the "lesser evil" in a way that doesn't benefit the greater evil? Obviously, there is no perfect or static answer since, after many centuries, here we are. Personally, I try to ensure that the binary choice of the system is the framework for my comments. Being clear to separate the tactical realities from my ethical and moral goals. Context is so vital in language. From how letters sound to the meaning of the stories we tell. Separating political opinions in the U.S. from the systematic strength of the binary removes that vital context and will tend to result in confusion.
Damn, what an intelligent and wise human being. Thank you for allowing your voice and perspective to be heard by those of us who are interested to hear it. We appreciate you. 👍
people gotta stop thinking that politics is a thing you need to not talk about if you talk about other stuff too. let this polymath talk about what he wants 😗
Day it like you mean it. Mean like you say it. Let em cry because they're not on your level anyway. Most of these folks could pass a comprehension quiz if the answer were already marked for them. They'd start with a perfect score and end up with a 0. They're little more than a mile marker to let you know how far you've come. Just like a Mike market they will go no further than where they are no matter how the traffic moves. Love your content. Keep it coming. ✌🏿✌🏿✌🏿
All that vitriol insulting other people's intelligence, and the first word of your reply is wrong, lol. You also misspelled words and used the wrong tense in places. Wow, sometimes the irony is real.
Well said. I used to think like this. Eventually I realized that critiquing one side does not exonerate the other, nor does critiquing both for different things mean that they are equal in any way. It's an important lesson.
I hate where we are in American politics/culture that one cannot critique anything about a person or thing without people treating it as that is a.) a complete assessment of that person/thing as a whole and b.) an wholehearted endorsement of the opposing side. How are we supposed to hold anyone or anything accountable if we're not allowed to critique that with which we disagree?
Ugh, no doubt. Any time we critique one party or candidate, it's taken as tacit support of their opponent. They're both garbage. Indeed, nominally left-wing parties and politicians require more critique, in my opinion. They're nominally supposed to support our interests. The evils of the Republican Party (or the Conservative Parties both here in Canada and my homeland of Britain) are overt. What can be said about them that hasn't already been said? I used to believe that the Democrats (or Liberals, or Labour,) were better than the Republicans or Conservatives. Now I understand that they work towards the same ends, using different, but converging tactics. Wolves and foxes.
Side note: it seems many people expect their chosen politician to be "perfect ," having no human flaws. Well, good luck with that thought. Even members of your own family and friends are flawed, but you find communion with them anyway 🤔 Perhaps, a simple Pros and Cons list of each candidate would be helpful...it helped me. Make sure it's fact-based though. ✌🏽
Genocide and Bigotry is not a Flaw. Thats where your friends, family, and collegeues differ from your politicians (hopefully). Noones asking for Kamala to be perfect, we're asking her to stop genocide so it doesn't set a horrifying precedent and stop the murder of civilians present and the future. Becides theres always compromises, but Why must we meet and compromise at bigotry hatred and genocide, intead of comprosmising near literally being good people and just ca,ling for ceasefire and stop sending arms to foreward a genocide? why must we compromise at the literal The Event Horizon that puts you from decent flawed person, to downright evil?
I dont think they want them to be perfect. most know very little about them beyond whatever flavor koolaid they drank. it's like an involuntary reaction and usually they repeat a concoction of cherry picked statements in whatever rant they're on that day. its cult like behavior to me
Why? Do? They? Even? Bother? Especially when it comes to matters of linguistics? It's as though they're intent on proving that definition of insanity: beating your head against the wall expecting it not to hurt. Yikes.
critiquing our political figures has always been a great American tradition, it's a right some ppl in the world don't have. they aren't divine beings or super heroes, they're flawed humans who are susceptible to corruption.
For fks sakes y'all we critique "our" candidates too in order to keep them in check and doing for the People instead of the Other Powers. You can support the non-Trump candidate, and _also_ hold them accountable. In fact, that's what you should be doing, always. Never just sitting back and saying "Well they dont care what I think" because maybe they would care if you said or did anything about it. They still care so much about receiving letters at govt offices. You need to stand up and tell them what you want or they'll just keep plowing forward.
I love staying for your lesson, even if I struggle to understand a lot of what you’re saying . I also stay to cheer on the other versions of myself & send them love & help them through a lot of issues as a highly gifted autistic light worker since childhood. People have been attacking & trying to canceling me out, due to the fact I had a lot of stalkers online & off (and whoever “bread me for my child” as well) after making a video as soon as “turnup” got out of office. I’m not a “super fan” of a lot of people places & things that have only killed me/us & have used & abused us as well. It’s the battle of the worlds & many have been fighting, mean while myself & the OG creators forgot a whole hell of a lot due to their “gaslighting” & traumatic events a lot of them have been putting us through. (I also love the places you take us in your videos & seeing the different graffiti too ) ❤️🔥🖤🤍🌈✨✌🏿🫶🏽
At this point, I don’t even pay attention to these arguments from people. They’re always in bad faith, and they can’t see the forest for the trees. 🤷🏽♀️
People telling educators to stop educating blow my mind. It's your hard earned knowledge and skill as and educator on display and they didn't feel comfy through the whole lesson so they had to throw a tantrum. I've had better behaved preschoolers. 🤦♀️
Ya'll need to realize that the only way to get the positive changes we want is to talk about the negatives we see. By holding Kamala (who I'm voting for, enthusiastically) accountable for the way she danced around the issue of Israel commiting genocide on Palestine with the support and aid of the US, we tell her we see it and won't accept it. When we talk about it, we make it known we want better, we demand better, we demand a permanent ceasefire. She has said she's committed to a ceasefire, and when we talk about her deliberate language choices like this, we say PROVE IT.
If you vote for candidates regardless of their actions, then you can't hold them accountable. You're telling them they have your vote regardless of what they do, and they have no incentive to listen to you
@teewhyemm1130 So they died simply for us to vote not to be engaged in knowing who we're voting for based on real issues, but simply vote. I'm so tired of hearing "they die fir us the vote" line 😒
@donewittit6607 So don't vote, but shut the hell up, because if you do nothing, you have nothing to say. That's my problem with people like you, STFU, if all you do is complain with no action. Not voting is inaction.
Americans are trained to have but 2 choices. But I believe you are pointing out that there should be a third? Personally, I see "war" in every variety as a way for wealthy men to fight (game?) with human pawns. Pawns who use the opportunity to destroy/violate/destroy the lives of all they touch, but seemingly women and children in particular. Humanity is how many thousands of years in the making, but we have no ability to impose self control? We don't bother to conceive of the possibilities that are destroyed with each bomb, bullet, or other miscellaneous weapon? We have the ability to evolve, create, heal, and perfect. But we are at the mercy of ludicrously aggressive and mindless individuals who delight in watching the endless pain, suffering, and destruction they instigate.
@sunnmcheaux I understood your position, and I really appreciate your clarity and your stand. More than that, I appreciate your wisdom, patience, and steadfast response, especially when others try to negate your stance. I pray your words take root in millions of hearts, as they have taken root in mine.
As someone who's planning on voting for Kamala, I appreciate the lessons you give us. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have known about the US government's involvement in the genocide. Although I'll probably never vote conservative as long as the threat of Project 2025 exists, I still think it's important to keep the lesser evil in check and remind myself not to idolize her the way people do with Trump. Thank you Prof 🖤
I love how your double standard critics want you to live in a world where people are either entirely evil or entirely infallible. Much of what Harris is proposing and fighting for would make this country substantially better for most of the people living in it. Her "trying to appease all sides" stance on Israel's destruction of Palestine is also a weakness. Pointing that out is not a complete invalidation of her entire cumulative character, ffs. If you actually admire and respect someone, shouldn't that mean you want to criticize them MORE? Because you're so invested in them you want them to improve on their weaknesses? I notice, for instance, your criticism of Trump is hardly constructive as much as just insults... deservedly so. Like, there's no possible way that man can improve upon his character (which is EXCLUSIVELY constructed of irredeemable flaws), so you rightly observed that there's no point in trying. To frame criticism as inherently malicious is simply to shut out any aspect of reality you don't like -- which is problematic when it's one that includes the complicated and unpleasant thing that is modern day colonialism. We have to call out all wrongdoings, we can't just ignore them when they're done by people we like or respect. Thank you for putting these hypocrites in their place, Sunn.
I hear and I'm a strong supporter. But your posts lately have been depressing for me. As a Black person, i just feel like we can't get a break. I don't know. It's a sign I might need to take a break from all this because a lot of things are starting to feel like attacks. Weoutchea
Sunn, I love you brother and I call bullshit. You knew your post would be seen as political commentary, because it was. I don’t think it was pro-Trump commentary but there are tons of examples of active and passive voice you could have used. J/s 🤷🏽
Kamala Harris is the right person for the job of president in this election. She is the more moral choice, and it's not even close. She is not perfect, she is not ideal, she's about as close to it as we can reasonably expect and better than most of us thought we'd get, nevertheless she can handle the criticism, and the heat. She responds to it well, she adjusts and hears us, We don't need obedience, we don't need loyalty, we need pragmatism and progress and *Justice*. And while Kamala's speech is exonerative of Israel's actions, and goes not far enough, many of us understand she has a needle to thread here in the wider context, nevertheless, she aught to be criticized for her flaws, if we want her to be a better candidate. Sunn is Right on the money here. Trump must lose this election, but Kamala must continue to be pressured on Israel, the Border, and other issues. And a little heat will not break this woman.
She is the right person. To. You. THAT'S the important thing people need to remember. Others can't reconcile her complicitness as being different to what MAGA would offer, and they would rather align with a 3rd party as general resistance. That means they feel different to u. People don't have to agree, but the onus in pushing them to Kamala shouldn't be shaming them and demanding that they move to her or else theyre the reason for what people fear. It should be put on Kamala to appeal to their concerns and complaints
As a non-American I have observed that your politics stinks to high heaven. It’s all about showmanship and entertainment. To think that your choice affects the rest of the world who have no voting rights nor choice in your system of “ democracy “ we are constantly roped in to listen to the shenanigans. If democracy is about the people, by the people, for the people then those affected should have a say. If not then please spare the rest of the world the silliness and vote wisely. We end up as collateral damage in your fights.
@@sunnmcheaux , you could be plural, couldn’t it? The whole process of electing the president and the American democratic process is what I’m referring to . Not a particular person. Didn’t think it came across as being personal. Apologies if it did. I was raised better than to be disrespectful on your platform.
