Rest in peace to one of the greatest defensive fighters ever who could stop you just as easily if he needed to. You almost never see a defensive fighter who can change the terms of a fight when a guy can match them in slipperiness. But Whitaker could.
If you watch closely, Hurtado at various times during this fight does an interesting flurry of hammer fist/chopping motion at Whitakers neck area. That frenetic flurry motion would throw Whitaker off a bit. Overtaxing a naturally defensively minded boxer, but not textbook technique that a schooled fighter like Whitaker is a master of countering.
I was quite surprised by Hurtado's savagery and dirty tactics. The fight was quite interesting however, and brought back memories of my early sparring matches. Once Whitaker knew he was in power, never let back.
Whitaker was losing this fight and did something he actually was not known for but those 8 or 9 over hand lefts was as brutal as I have ever seen from a 140 pounder
around the 17:20-40 mark the commentators fail to notice and acknowledge them vicious right hands Hurtado was bombin on Whitaker he stumbled like twice in a matter of seconds from them right hands. Sweat Pea ma boy but dang they was riding his nuts wit the biased commentary, Hurtado coulda been crispier but he still was the faster and stronger of the two till he got ko'd
those was some good shots by Hurtado, but it was a close competive fight, and remember Pernell had the better compubox stat.not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
Overall Whitaker landed more punches over all rounds, so even though Hurtado had two knockdowns, his fouls offset the gains, and the fight was close. The commentators felt Whitaker was winning overall in their scoring, which was what I saw. But Hurtado ended up getting knocked completely the f-ck out so what is your beef about?
Diosbley Hurtado was underrated as a boxer. He beat randall bailey for a light welterweight title. He was knocked down Kostya Tszyu twice before he got knocked out and beat Joel Casamayor is the amateurs.
Hurtado was paid a lot of money to fight Tszyu and was coming off a 10 rounds win and fought Tszyu 2 weeks after that. Not enough time to let the body recuperate and it cost him a lot.
That was disgusting, the referee didn't do a shit, In the 11 Pernell hit 9 times while Hurtado was entangled in the ropes, defenseless, 9 times, and the fucking referee did nothing. That was an unnecessary punishment. Sad!
+jaboby braswel age yes. height no! pernell is one of my favorite fighters of all time! Yet Hurtado is fighting, Pernell, the judge's, announcers, the commentators, the fan's, and most of the American public. like I said Pernell in Cuba, in the B team!!!
That wasn't luck at all...he knew he was losing on points & he adjusted & did what he had to do to win. Great championship come from behind win for Sweet P.
Mercanti refereed pretty well during the fight and then totally failed when Hurtado was HURTadoed. Three unanswered punches should have done it. Mercanti allowed ten.
Shades of Emile Griffith pounding an unconscious Benny Paret on the ropes while the ref did nothing. It's tough enough to take a pro shot when you can roll with it. When you're out cold and have nowhere to fall, it can be a death sentence. Refs can get caught fight watching and forget where they are. Mercanti was generally a good ref too but this was an atrocity. Thank God Hurtado wasn't too damaged and was able to go on to have a successful career.
The referee allowed Hurtado to be savagely beaten after he was already out on his feet and unable to defend himself. The ref was watching in full view and did not intervene until Hurtado was knocked out of the ring. What incompetence, or was the ref trying to please someone who wanted Hurtado to win? The scorecards had Hurtado ahead at the time of the KO.
You a reff no was sweet pee behind yes. It's boxing so yes punish him he was knocked down 3 times right did you say something about that nope. So punish him.
It's Arthur Mercante, he's refereed plenty of championship fights. Most recently the Devon Alexander-Randall Bailey fight (to the best of my knowledge).
nope he got blinded by a right hand by pernell and Hurtado didnt see the left coming.not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
HalDanGhor but Hurtado made way too many mistakes. You can't get hit with those types of body shots and make a mistake by not covering up. Hurtado reminds me of amir khan. Both have fast hands and both make mistakes.
That was disgusting, the referee didn't do a shit, he hit 9 times while Hurtado was entangled in the ropes, defenseless, 9 times, and the fucking referee did nothing. That was an unnecessary punishment. Sad!
Referee ain't shit. Should've been fired and never trusted to ref a fight again. That man could've died. Just Trash af. You watched a boxer get hit with 10-11 unanswered punches and STILL didn't stop the fight. Bum.
+Jacobi braswel Rigo is the most complete fighter in the last 20yrs! add up all his opponents wins in his 16 fights! is like close to 300. and yet hes still considered boring.
cheese, hurtado almost pulled off a joe calzaghe against whitaker..throws awkward punches from different angles while being defensively minded..he gave whitaker problems
Yep, and he's had other issues. He's clearly still getting fights because his dad was a notable ref. He's the guy that allowed Yuri Foreman to fight with what appeared to be a torn ACL, and would not let his corner throw in the towel. He sucks.
This fight was towards the end of whitaker career. Whitaker fought De la hoya after this fight. Sweet pea wasn't training correctly and rumor to be use drugs (cocaine) during that time.
Commentators suck!.... if they were the judges they would have given the fight to Whitaker .... Hurtado was beating the shit out of that guy who was also fighting very scorrectly, it's a shame that the Cuban got knocked out with an initial lucky shot (the others were a gift from the referee who sucked too) .... if Hurtado was smart and went down after that firt shot and got up again he,d have been the winner....
+RomySplinter - Whitaker landed 168 of 448 punches (38%) and Hurtado connected on 131 of 429 (31%). Without being aware of that, just by watching, I had Whitaker three points up at the end of the tenth.
not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
Y would a taller man who just scored a knock down work the body? He’s still moving , so he doesn’t believe in the knock down! Tony Page and the other guy is str8 🤡
Lmao so many people praising this dude hurtado and talking bout cuban boxers are the best. This was when whitakers career was nearing the end and was abusing drugs, dont get me wrong cuban boxers are good in the olympics but fall short in the pros where it counts. Also whitaker like a true veteran took his time looking for that ko because he knew that was the only way he could win, and literally almost killed this dude!
Justin Allison No. All im saying is the comments are filled with idiots saying cubans are the best, look what this guy did to whitaker only a cuban could do this to a legend and etc. Lmfao! They seem to forget that whitaker nearly killed this man with that ko so all that other shit cubans r talking about he did is irrelevant.
I always thought Whitaker had a punk arse character. Great fighter but a Punk. And This Ref was a terrible one. Only got his gig because of his Farther 🥊
you must dont have boxing eyes, thisnt like Joe Calzage vs roy jones,Hurtado is getting hit too much and hes throwing a lot and missing, youre not dominating by getting hit that much, not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
yea at this time of Pernell career fighting somebody like Hurtado is a dangerous fight, Hurtado had Amir Khan like hand speed, and he was fast on his feet and he had a popped to his hand. he throwsbwild fast punches, and he was nearly 10 years younger than pernell, and he had the longer reach on pernell. i remeber in 94, Hurtado destroyed larry nicholson. but hurtado was not schooling Pernell lol.not sure, Hurtado was getting hit too much with body shots that set up those head shot, Pernell blided him with the right and snapped his head back with that devasting left he didnt see. people who dont have good eyes would think Hurtado was dominating, but in reality the fight was a close fight, this wasnt a Joe Calzage vs Roy Jones fight, Pernell face wasnt a bloody mess, people dont even realize that Pernell actually had the better Compubox numbers in this fight, pernell hit Hurtado with some good body shots that set that blind left that sent Hurtado night night. everytime Hurtado got hit to the body in later rounds to the body Hurtado eyes squenched. in round 7 or 8 at the end of one of those round Pernell almost knockHurtado out, in round 11 Hurtad was fighting to surivive. thats why he got knock in round 11, because he nothing left really.
LoL, Hurtado was schooling Whitaker on how to get knocked completely out and fall through the ropes unconscious. Whitaker was well past his prime here and much older than Hartado. Although Hartado was indeed a better fighter than most people had previously believed, with fast powerful punches and good combinations with unorthodox delivery.
Absolutely. I counted a good 3 or 4 shots that were totally unnecessary- Hurtado was completely done in before that. This is up there with Roy Jones Jr vs Richard Hall, Jesus Chavez vs Leavander Johnson (Johnson would actually end up dying), and Gerry Cooney vs Ken Norton as far as refs stepping in and stopping the fight WAY too late, when one guy was taking vicious power shots one after the other. And I'm glad Hurtado was okay thank God.
Oye que referi más singao bio como estaba ese hombre y no paro la pelea pudo ver muerto con esos golpe o es que no se acuerdan de paret que murió así mismo
Damn whitaker showed his heart knocking him out like that knowing he was behind on points. give a lot of credit to hurtado tho for handling whitaker b4 he got caught. Sweet Pea #1
Whitaker was getting schooled! another flat footed American boxer. there are tons in tho."pro's" today Whitaker in Cuba would not have been as big as he was in the."free" world. the only reason he and the 84 and 88 Olympic team won gold, was because Cuba boycotted the games. if Cuba had gone pernell Whitaker would of faced Mario kindalen. the American's would not have won. haha!
@@TheFKD24 bro, he knocked down whitaker and was busy for most of the fight..if whitaker didnt get that knockout he would of lost..who cares if they were "slaps"..joe calzaghe slapped the shit outta roy jones jr..people called him a slapper..
@@leolandi3852 this jawn 3yrs old. Hurtado was a contender, Pernell was a world class boxing world champion. Multiple weight divisions. All 3 knock downs were, not power shots, off balance glansing punches. Pernell was a slow starter later in his career. Those 3 knock downs, was Sweet Pea ever hurt? NO! He fought JC Chavez, that fight went the distance. Is Hurtado a harder puncher than Chavez? De La Hoya, that fight went the distance. I won't ask the same question, De La Hoya barely laid a punch on Sweet Pea. Both fights, robbed. Sweet Pea knew Hurtado couldn't hurt him. We knew he was losing, He knew he was losing, he needed a knock out. You mean to tell me Whitaker got up off his stool, went and got a Knock out. I'm a fan of Hurtado. Great boxer. Hell of an amateur career. In my opinion he never adjusted into a professional boxing style. Btw that's what I'm referring to in my original comment. Hurtado 1. Could have made this into "fight of the year" fight. Instead he used an amateur style throwing punches to build up points. 2. He let Sweet Pea dust him off. In the later rounds. In that time? Whitaker wasn't known as a KO puncher. He way UNDER ESTIMATED Pernell's punching power. Whitaker could've knocked him out when he wanted to. Instead he LET Hurtado do him and immaculately stretched him out. I feel bad for the people who bet on Diabolis Hurtado.
This shows how special Cuban fighters are .. when you can schooll one of thee all-time greats nd a defensive Master . " Sweetpea had yo abandoned his skill nd go for the Kill"
Brain-fade by the ref - Hurdado fell into the ropes & it was a punch that put him there - should have been counted as a knockdown before Whitaker threw those 9 of 10 follow-up shots - fortunately Hurtado survived, but he was in a very vulnerable spot.
Crazy end to a pretty good matchup, though SweetPea was ageing at this point. Hurtardo got his chances against champs but was KO'd by Whittaker, and Tszyu i think dropped him several times with body shots before finishing him early rounds KO. He put both Whittaker and Tszyu on the canvas before losing and was very very awkward. Worthy challenger.
