Once you start growing your own fruit trees it becomes addictive! I live in the city and am developing an urban orchard with 3 peach trees, 2 variety apples, 2 plums, persimmon, Asian pear, fig, kiwi....with grapes on the way. It is one of the highlights of my year when I get fresh peaches, plums and the rest! The only pests I have with my trees - not squirrels, or insects - are people! I say that somewhat endearingly - but the neighbors and passeres-byers are so tempted, but well behaved. And to their big surprise that a small fruit orchard can be grown in the city. I try and encourage everyone to plant fruit trees! It is so well worth it....

I've watched this video about 4 dozen times by now. Glad I was able to see the UK documentary Michael mentions before it got wiped from RU-vid. If anyone ever finds it again, please share! Slowly waking my way through your persimmon inventory and now have almost every one mentioned in this video, with doubles of Rosseyanka and Tecumseh. Michael was kind enough to help me pick varieties to provide fruit for my chickens late in the season and over winter, but I admit, I'm addicted now and am adding them for myself and my farmers market customers as much as for my poultry!

I would be interested in grafting Persimmons. I have one tree and no more room for another one, but I would like more than one variety.

Deer and squirrels? Problem?
@DanielinLaTuna
@DanielinLaTuna 2 года назад
Early on I had deer problems. They would rip off the brittle branches. Now most of my damage is rats and birds. I’m in Southern California.
@annabellemang
@annabellemang 3 месяца назад
@@DanielinLaTuna My trouble came from coyotes. The coyotes would eat the fruit, leaping to grab the fruit and breaking the branches in the process as they climbed the trees. I had to cut off all branches below 6' so the coyotes would have nothing to grab onto when leaping up into the young trees. I was worried that the young slender tree trunk would get broken and ruin the whole tree. Alot of green fruit was damaged with fang marks. But all of the ripe fruit was gobbled up!

Great... Do they grow in zone 5? If so which one would you recommend, for front of the house!?

@bank80 4 года назад
You have to buy an American Persimmon for zone 5.
@bluegrassdiggers9030
@bluegrassdiggers9030 2 года назад
@@bank80 Zones are shifting further north Im in what used to be zone 6a northern Kentucky we rarely get below zero anymore and if we do its like one night more like a zone 7 now. I would go with rosseyanka if you wanted to risk it maybe grow on a south facing wall or a pure American to be safe.
@bank80
@bank80 2 года назад
@@bluegrassdiggers9030 Just last year you had sustained temps that were lower than normal for your grow zone. People grow plants outside of their grow zone and it works out for a year or two just to eventually have their tree heavily damaged by a cold winter. It rarely works out well in the long run.
@bluegrassdiggers9030
@bluegrassdiggers9030 2 года назад
@@bank80 I live here we had one or two nights that got to zero degrees last year. It was 72 degrees on Christmas day tomorrow it's supposed to be 72 again we used to wear sweaters on Christmas now it's shorts we rarely get below 32 during day time temps anymore so far this year we've had none. I don't know where you got that info from? Iet me know when winter shows up anymore it's like a mix of spring and fall then hot as hell during summer.
@bank80
@bank80 2 года назад
@@bluegrassdiggers9030 This is one week, silly. I'm on the border of zone 7b and 8a, much warmer than you and we had sub zero temperatures last year. Growing out of your grown zone is only recommended for plants that can be covered or grown close to your house. A Rosseyanka is one of the larger persimmons and cannot be covered when grown to protect from cold winters and is not a good plant to place close to a foundation. You're giving trash 🗑️ advice... because it's 70s degrees now... Come back in February.
