A wonderful lady and collection. It would be educational to be informed the growing, fertilising program so I could apply to my 2 persimmon fruit trees in my back yard.

@getmesomechopstx Yes, separation far enough to avoid cross pollination by bee activity. I would imagine several hundred yards. I have Jiro, Hichiya, Coffee Cake and Chocolate planted as a four in one. I get great pollinated Coffee Cake fruit and a wonderful set on all four. Seeds in my Jiro don't bother me, considering all the other benefits I can deal with a few seeds.

How often should I water a Fuyu Persimmon? Just planted one 2 days ago here in the Phoenix area, i hear a lot about not watering it to much but I know a newly planted tree supposed to be water regularly especially in the 100 degree summers
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 4 года назад
Manuel Arellano probably want to water it a couple times a week or more. Get a moister meter and that will help. You definitely want to cover the root zone with a thick layer of mulch. This will cool the roots and make better use of your water.
@ArellanoMJ

@@DaveWilsonTrees Thank you so much for your reply, I saw one of your videos about watering and yes Im thinking on buying a moisture meter, I put mulch is a must here in phoenix, And painted the trunk, I also planted next to him a Black sapote, So now he has a cousin, I have another question for you, You think I should cover it with a shade cloth? I don't know how tolerant are they with sun, Sorry I have so much questions, I have mangos in my backyard, guavas, avocados, and a barbados cherry, Longan, But this is my first experience with a Persimmon and I search for info and Is just confusing, And I know you have a few persimmon trees thats why all this questions, Have a nice evening and thank you again.

Jiro Fuyu is very popular, and should be easy to find. They can be precocious, so you will likely get a few fruits first year. You can find a nursery near you that will have them by going to our website.

Hachiya can ripen on the tree without frost here in the San Diego area.

Thanks this was informative, I am trying to pick one tree, one variety to grow. It's confusing but I think I want a non-astringent without seeds that is sweet. I think Jiro and Fuyu seems to be the big choices that fill that bill.
@DaveWilsonTrees

Izu is another option. Also Giant Fuyu.

I just planted one, How often you water yours? I hear a lot that you shouldn't water it that much but when is recently planted you should right? I live in the Phoenix area, so the summer is brutal thats another reason, I just don't want to kill it if I water to much
@adoboy5520

According to experts twice a week is enough. I also use Jobe for fertilizer applied in spring and fall. Good luck.

Does anyone know if any of these varieties will do well in San Clemente? I am only about a mile from the beach so we don't get the heat that Irvine gets but I want a very pretty persimmon tree, with droopy branches (otherwise I can't see it from my house) due to an overhang and I want to be able to see the pretty fall branches.

I love the tour! I am looking for info on whether persimmons can be grown in the high density style in my backyard. Is it ok to prune them short (knee high) when planting like I’ve seen you do with other fruits? A lot of sources online scoff at the idea saying persimmons need much more space!

Outstanding videos ... all of them. So informative. Dave, what species or variety would be best for a smaller space? I've never heard of any dwarfs or semi's. Are there any that are self-pollinating?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 6 лет назад
Most peaches and nectarines are self-fruitful and are available as genetic dwarfs. Some plums are self-fruitful. You can keep any fruit tree any size you prefer by summer pruning it.

I’m in the Coachella valley, they say it is zone 9b, but I think it is more like zone 10, any way I’d like to grow some persimmons , yet I want to make sure it’ll grow in this area, what kind do you recommend I thank you before hand , and hope to hear from you Carlos

I have seen successful persimmon trees and production in the lower desert but it will take some effort. 3 or 4 hours of late afternoon shade. Whitewashing to protect against early and mid day sun exposure. Fast draining soil and a soil PH of 6.5 to 7.5. Jiro Fuyu is the only variety I have seen planted there. Personally I think it’s too much effort for the reward. In a summer like this with temps in the 110 to 120 range all the fruit will scald and drop before it’s ripe. Plant an early season peach on nemagard rootstock and enjoy some fresh peaches in May and buy your persimmon fruit in the fall.

Is persimmon usually grafted onto Lotus root-stock? Is this to control size of the tree? I have some persimmon trees where the graft has died and the root-stock kept growing, the fruit looks like tiny pea-sized persimmons. Is this Lotus?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 4 года назад
Yes, that is Lotus. It is the most popular persimmon rootstock due to seed availability and scion compatibility. Kaki seed is hard to find, Virginiana is not compatible with all varieties of persimmon like Lotus is. It is also to control the size of the tree.

Tom I got Jiro Persimmon and this is its first year in ground. It seems to be really slow growing, only 3 new shoots after cutting it back to knee height in spring/summer. The shoots are no more than 5 inches long. is this slow growing nature is normal of Jiro Persimmon trees? Thanks sandy
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 9 лет назад
***** Not that unusual for a first season in ground. Make sure you are irrigating and fertilizing properly and you should get 1' to 3' this season.

The Irvine extension station is not open to the public on a regular basis. They host one or two open houses per year usually in summer and fall. You would be welcome to volunteer for one of my workshops and help us with a project. My next workshop will probably be in May for apple fruit thinning.

Dave Wilson Nursery I'd love to Know whenever you have events. Should I send you an email? Do you know if the riverside citrus variety collection is also closed to the public for visiting?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 7 лет назад
Send me an e-mail about May 1st on the apple project. The UC Riverside citrus collection is not open to the public. They have a citrus class in the spring or summer where a tour of the collection is available. You also have the California State Citrus Park on Van Buren Ave in Riverside. Tours and tastings available. Open to the public 7 days a week.

Many persimmons are astringent unless pollinated or soft ripe. Wait until they are very soft and then they should have nice flavor.

@josephallie3001

+Dave Wilson Nursery - Thanks for replying. no seeds and flesh was more orange colored. they were over ripe and falling off tree. Wondering if maybe it was'nt cross pollinated as to why they are so stainy.
