Recently I watched "Persona" from 1966 directed by the late and great Ingmar Bergman, and it's probably one of the best movies I have seen, so far, ever. In this video, I will explain why I think so, or introduce the movie to you all! So sit back, relax and enjoy!

For all the erotic to pornographic cinema out there - almost nothing is so charged with eroticism as the spoken story of the sex on the beach. And it is only words.

Elizabeth and Alma are the same person with two detached personas. I think Alma is the real one, and Elizabeth is her alter ego. The way Elizabeth never talks and just listens Alma's secrets, confessions etc. makes me think that Elizabeth is a woman Alma created in her mind to face herself's identity, and besides she just wanted someone to listen her. Also there is her husband/fiancee thing. But of course these things are not enough to think they are the same person. The whole cinematography style in this movie was just explained it. The lights, while one of the woman in the dark, other one in the light etc. symbol the "split personality", their face transitions to each other's in the scenes, surreal thoughts that can't be touched means there is a dissociation from reality. But I still don't know who is the real one, Alma unlike Elizabeth, she successfully aborted her unwanted child which could be means Alma is Elizabeth's imaginary, but in the other hand, Elizabeth is the person that Alma would like to be. She tells that she is beautiful, she loves artists and I think she wanted to be a actress, in that situation Elizabeth is Alma's imaginary.. But at the same time, Alma could be the person that Elizabeth would like to be too, we couldn't know that for sure. So it's complicated. But when I look objectively, it seems like Alma is everything Elizabeth couldn’t be. She has an affinity for her job, she loves her husband and most importantly she averted an unwanted birth. She is like Elizabeth’s ideal self. But I feel like they complete each other with their opposite/incompatible thoughts (like when Alma read a paragraph from a book, Elizabeth liked it but Alma didn't and said she's disagree) Like I said before, it's like to face her own personality at the same time with other things. These were my thoughts, and english is not my first language, so there could be some mistakes with the grammar, sorry about that. And I love the video! You're so underrated, keep going

I totally agree with your opinion. I think the movie shows the conflict in the woman's brain or unconscious mind the way that Elizabeth is silence and in a high place (better than alma) and how she judge Alma indicates to the ego. It's also everything that alma wants to be and in the end of the movie Alma leave the house alone which means refer that that Elisabeth is not real and the house can be Alma's mind. And she in the end managed to control her ego. I'm not sure but I love the way you explained the movie

Great video! This film got me interested in Bergman’s films! It has been some time since I have watched it, so I’ve admittedly forgotten quite a bit about it, but I’m open to revisiting it!

I got into PERSONA first by reading the published script around 1972 or 73 in the Midwest. I first saw the film in 1976 and it was of course very different from its script. Loved it so much I chose to stage the script for a senior thesis play in college. A+. Ten years later in NYC I staged it again (all without permission though I had written for such but got no reply). Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Shame and A Passion are my favorite of Bergman's many films. Persona overall is astonishing though every time I have tried to introduce friends to it, they are never impressed. "It's too quiet and depressing." "It's so black and white." "It didn't make any sense." Greatest movie of all time? Maybe not, but a great one indeed. Thanks for this post. Cheers.

In my opinion this movie is almost purely psychological, and perhaps shouldn’t be taken literally but metaphorically. Alma and Elizabet are the same person. Alma represents the Persona and Elizabet represents the Self. The self is indifferent so we employ a Persona to help us “act” out our roles in life, for example Elizabet cannot act out the role of a caring, loving mother as she represents the indifferent self, so she must employ someone to act this role out for her. We see in the beginning of the movie that Alma is looking forward to having kids with her husband, she is also in a traditionally caring role (a nurse/doctor). We are also shown that the persona knows the secrets of the self as they are part of a greater whole, and that evil cannot be fought unless we first acknowledge that it exists inside us, Alma (the persona) telling Elizabet (the self) that she is rotten then begging for forgiveness shows this perfectly). We also see this from the scene where the experienced doctor tells Elizabet that she sees through her, and that instead of playing the games of the persona where “every tone of voice, every gesture is a lie”, she is instead choosing to be mute and not take part in the roles of life that the persona must fulfil. I have some others thoughts but I think this wall of text is enough. Great video bro.

I think that this movie is Jungian manifesto in someway, still thinking about it, so I don't have a solid statement to put out yet, but I would say that if you compare Jungian psycoanalysis with the segments of this movie, only then it completely makes sense.

Unfortunately, you need to do a little more research. The images in the opening montage all reference previous films by Ingmar Bergman, in particular his three immediately preceding films. Knowledge about Bergman and his life is necessary to any proper analysis of his films.

Read the Cosmoetica review of Persona. It is absolutely not the greatest movie of all time, and fails in many ways. However it is a great film. Also, you gave a pretty shallow analysis yourself and just spewed a bunch of jumbled nonsense.

Not sure it’s accessible to a general audience. It’s difficult to make much sense of it and isn’t particularly entertaining. Tbh i would say this film is just kind of tedious. I was waiting for the end. And you can intellectualise the meaning and the themes and the structure and construction of it all u like but if it is boring, it fails at tje first hurdle. Cries and Whispers and Wild Strawberries - excellent. This - meh:
