I just realized something. Look at the arcana that happens in P3: 0 - Fool - Minato I - Magician - Junpei II - Priestess - Fuuka III - Empress - Mitsuru IV - Emperor - Akihiko V - Hierophant - Shinji VI - Lovers - Yukari VII - Chariot - Aigis VIII - Justice - Ken IX - Hermit - Jin X - Fortune - Takaya XI - Strength - Koromaru XII - Hanged Man - Chidori XIII - Death - Ryoji/Minato Every major character and Persona user in P3P are associated with each of the 13 Arcana. Then these are the quotes that Nyx Avatar has: - "The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate... Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope. Yes, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed..." (after defeating Nyx with the Fool Arcana) Minato is the bearer of the Fool Arcana and tries to fight against the ultimate fate of the world which is total annihilation, finding that one ray of hope that becomes the Universe Arcana. - "Attaining one's dream requires a stern will and unfailing determination." (switching to Magician Arcana) Junpei, the Magician, is an average Joe, but his determination to prove himself, to always fight for his beliefs, it reached Chidori's heart and made her want to live. - "The silent voice within one's heart whispers the most profound wisdom." (switching to Priestess Arcana) Fuuka as the Priestess, despite being bullied by others, she remained kind and someone that ultimately supported the group as their sensor. - "Celebrate life's grandeur... Its brilliance... its magnificence..." (switching to Empress Arcana) Mitsuru, the Empress, lived a life of luxury and is always at the top of society, but she always fought for the sake of her father, and then she fought for her friends. - "Only courage in the face of doubt can lead one to the answer..." (switching to Emperor Arcana) Akihiko was the Emperor who lost his sister and then his best friend. But despite losing them, he had the courage to move on, and even accept sacrifices that had been made, even when Minato was lost in the end as well. - "It is indeed a precious gift to understand the forces that guide oneself..." (switching to Hierophant Arcana) Shinji is the Hierophant no doubt. He always was overcome with guilt and tried punish himself, but he was always the one that understood others the most and arguably the kindest one, and helped Ken find the will to live on and not feel ready to die either. He even accepted that his death is a necessary. But even though he was dead, he assisted Minato one last time against Nyx. "Alright, let's do this." - "There is both joy and wonder in coming to understand another..." (switching to Lovers Arcana) Yukari fits Lovers well. Despite having her own emotional problems, help Mitsuru go through her grief of losing her father. However, Yukari losing Minato made her go through a period of depression that she had a hard time accepting it, but in the end, she understood the feelings of others and of Minato and decided to live on for their sakes. - "One of life's greatest blessings is the freedom to pursue one's goals." (switching to Chariot Arcana) Aigis is curious on Chariot at first, but it fits. Before she was programmed to fight and destroy Shadows and thus never stopping on that goal. However, she then began to desire to also find her own humanity, and it became her goal, which worked well as she inherited Minato's will and abilities. - "To find the one true path, one must seek guidance amidst uncertainty..." (switching to Justice Arcana) Ken definitely wanted Justice. Losing his mother because of Shinji, he wanted to avenge her and thus tried to kill Shinji. However, he was sometimes doubtful, as when it came to it, Ken couldn't go through with it, but ended up ultimately forgiving Shinji and taking on his will as his own. - "It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path..." (switching to Hermit Arcana) Jin did act as a Hermit. He always acted as if he was the smartest of the group, but even though he hated what happened to him, he perfectly accepted his role and even understood what was happening, but he decided that he would follow Takaya and remained loyal to the end, even killing himself in the process. - "Alongside time exists fate, the bearer of cruelty." (switching to Fortune Arcana) Takaya is both ironically and unironically the Fortune, as he was the cruelest of the bunch but was given the cruelest treatment in life that made him view life as if he was on the edge of death always. He never regretted his actions nor did he intend to be forgiven, and always lived for the moment. - "Only with strength can one endure suffering and torment." (switching to Strength Arcana) Koromaru is definitely the Strength. He lost his master and wanted to continue on living, never forgetting his master but also trying to help his new companions. However, like Shinji, he never forgot how he was not strong enough to protect his master. - "In the face of disaster lies opportunity for renewal." (switching to Hanged Man Arcana) Chidori is truly the Hanged Man. She was in Strega, also following the philosophy of living the moment, and never attaching to others. But Junpei changed all that and she fell in love with him, and ultimately gave up her own life. But in that moment, she also became reborn and found a reason to live once more, and she's with Junpei again. Life truly renewed for her. - "The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate... Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope. Yet, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Beyond the beaten path lies the absolute end. It matters not who you are... Death awaits you." (switching to Death Arcana) Ryoji is Death incarnate, but also remember that Minato's ultimate fate was Death. Despite being Death, both found the will and love for life and living. They accepted their roles, but they made memories that can never be forgotten. ---- The symbolism in Persona 3 is REAL!!!!
"Yet the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed." Don't know why, but it gives me the shivers when Nyx reasserts that, as if giving hope and a final sentence at the same time.
I like how he says the last quote about death. "It matters not who you are..." The tone of voice almost sounds apologetic, as if it's out of his control.
The only time you see Nyx herself is in the solo fight where Minato gives up his life, so technically you're right since that wasn't Nyx in human form. Ryoji himself stated that his role was to usher Nyx into the world and his backstory together with that shows they aren't one in the same.
The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate. Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope. Yet the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed. Beyond the beaten path lies the absolute end: It matters not who you are; death awaits you. Ahhhhh chiils. Always the chills when I hear this. It's so.... true...
Truth be told, the Nyx Avatar isn't a true representation of the Death Arcana, but is actually the inversed version of it. The Death Arcana represents transition, regeneration, deep change, and cycles, while the inverse Death Arcana represents doom, destruction, and an end to everything.
I mean, Ikutsiki tried to use us as sacrifices so that he can bring up a new world as the King. I think Nyx can count as either, but humanity wanted the end. Atleast that's what I think
So, Nyx avatar talk about Jumpei, then Fuuka, Mitsuru, Akihiko, Shinjiro, Yukari, Aigis, Koromaru, Ken, then Strega members : Jin, Takaya, Chidori... And finally himself, Ryoji.... Damnit, this boss is too deep and made me cry when I thought too much about it. Atlus, I hate you !
Except your party members and Strega all represent an Arcana as well, as Aesir was listing. Junpei wasn't the Magician Social Link, (Atleast, not in P3 or FES. He was in P3P if you played as a female character) but he was still tied to the Magician Arcana.
Be glad that Nyx didn't cycle all 22 Arcana, that would've been a nightmare. Though it'd be interesting to say what he/she has to say about post-Death Arcana.
I find it odd how the antagonists in persona 3 and 4 are neither good nor evil merely carrying out the will of humanity. Nyx interpreted the cries of people as their longing for the end if suffering. Whereas izanami saw man's desire to be shielded from the truth no one wants to see
John Wick not really, since the whole point of Yaldabaoth was that he represented humanity’s desire to be governed and let a higher power take the wheel for them. He was the shadow tied to the collective unconscious just like the other two.
Gigathyn he saw that humanity desired to push their burdens onto others and that they desired to be controlled so that they would not have to worry about life’s issues.
Doctor2706i actually, Nyx herself doesn’t have a will or mind, like stated in the “Answer”. The only reason it came down to kill all humans is because Erebus, humanity’s collective yearning for death, called out to it.
I know that the final line is about the fact that you will eventually die, regardless of who you are and what you do. But I'm beginning to think that the meaning goes a little further than that: It might be very possible that Nyx/Ryoji begin to realize that they, despite being the Avatar of Death itself, are not the exception of that rule...
It's kinda true that fate is the bearer of cruelty. Because somehow, it can be really playful though. Fate may be nice to you but sometimes it can be cruel as fuck
I think what makes it even more interesting is that Nyx isn't particularly evil, it's just doing it's job-- and when faced by an unlikely opponent is forced to back off for once.
Tower:The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed.....Renovate oneself means climbing new highs Fighting the fate along side Star: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed..... Looking for the light Is the way to a new path
Judgement: "the moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate. Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope. Yet the arcana is the means by which all is revealed... At the point of death, the opportunity of rebirth glimmers faintly. Ahead of you lies 2 choices, either live to see another day or succumb to judgement."
Sun: The ability to pull through countless miseries and rise once more as radiant...it is enviable... Judgement: To do wrong is the same as to destroy your own soul. As you judge, you see judges everywhere... The World: Dreams and Reality may become one in the same. To spin a dream is to spin the fate of the world.
Not only that, but they also coincide with many things that many people have do deal with in today's society. The entire franchise (especially Persona 4) has symbolism towards all of the hardships our society gives us, and the writers put their own methods, and beliefs, as to how to deal with them. If anyone could take Nyx's words into heart, they'd be a very happy individual indeed...
@@PaynePlayz_ agreed they are still most memorable cast for me. P4 cast is alright, p5 cast the worst for me they are one dimensional and another version of p4 cast in nutshell
Sun: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Only a select few can have their place in the sun. Great effort, energy and persistence are all factors in striving for excellence.
This is a video that a friend send me when he found out that I was interested in Tarot. I was very much fascinated by a video game that handled Tarot this way, and it is what led me to playing Persona 3, and eventually, the whole series, and some SMT titles. I owe a lot to this video.
Typically Death is an apathetic force in games, though this game took a different path. This Death understands people, understands what people have to go through in life and what challenges they may go through. It also saids that Tarot was not originally meant for fortune telling, but for self discovery. The Arcana has the answers that each person with that Tarot card needs, thus as it goes through each Arcana it explains the one that it switches to.
Judgement: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... All living things cannot postpone their final judgement. It is Death's final trial and will become your salvation, or eternal damnation.
Death is not a hunter unbeknownst to its prey. One is always aware that it lies in wait. Though life is merely a journey to the grave, it must not be undertaken without hope. Only then will a traveler's story live on, treasured by those who bid him farewell. But alas, my guest's life has now ended, his story unwritten... i know nyx does not say that but this is my second most favorite quote after the death arcana
Leon8937 I copy/pasted it from Temperance on, since the rest are actually from the video: Temperance: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Within the clashing of opposites, there is the most joyous of harmonies... Devil: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Sinful humanity is a slave to their own desires... Tower: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... All things that rise must fall, no matter the time... Star: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... The ability to live on with hope keeps humanity in pain and procession... Moon: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Fantasies have long since been the inspiration for humans, through dream and nightmare... Sun: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... The ability to pull through countless miseries and rise once more as radiant... It is enviable... Judgment: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... To do wrong is the same as to destroy your own soul. As you judge, you see judges everywhere... The World: The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Dreams and Reality may become one in the same. To spin a dream is to spin the fate of the world...
+Banji always get a lot of personas so that you can deal with a lot of different situations, even if it means using the compendemonium (I think that's the name of it?)
math77370 I've beat the game and P4G with no trouble, outside of being initially underleveled for P3's final boss fight. I'm pretty sure I just didn't want to bother with fusing too much, lol.
I love most of these quotes, but, "Celebrate life's grandeur... Its brilliance... its magnificence" stands out the most to me. Nyx is the incarnation of death and yet treasures life and the struggle to better one's self. Though death is an inevitability she never once takes a nihilistic view that one shouldn't strive as death makes it all pointless. Could this be a villain with a nuanced philosophy?!?
worst part of this battle 'nyx avatar casts mamoodoon' yukari: miss, aigis: miss, mitsuru: miss, main player: hit, me: what the flying monkey whas that!
come here after P5R..... "The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate... Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope." this quote already spoiling Adam Kadmon
"The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate. Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope. The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed. When the end is reached, and all become one, there you will find the truth you seek. Yet, to understand the truth is only the beginning of your journey." 9999 Megidolaon, then Arcana Shift back to Fool.
A masterpiece, words of wisdom will pass on for generations. This video was out when I was 7, but I played this game now, I am 24 now. I am glad to play this timeless masterpiece
Judgement: Every action has its consequences. One should live his life knowing this, so the final judgement can be faced without fear or regret. World: One should not fear the end of his journey, since it's only beginning of the new one. That is the circle of Truth and Answer.
The arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Temperance: Within the clashing of opposites, there is the most joyus of harmonies. Devil: Sinful humanity is a slave to their own desires. Tower: All things that rise must fall, no matter the time. Star: The ability to live on with hope keeps humanity in pain and procession. Moon: Fantasies have long since been the inspiration for humans, through dream and nightmare.
It's highly ironic that the embodiment of death has such prolific insight that pertains to the nuances in life. The following are my own rough translations of their meanings. (Fool doesn't have a quote as the Nyx Avatar immediately shifts to Magician at the start of the fight.) Magician In order to achieve what you desire in life you must be committed to pursuing the goal. Priestess: Trust in your intuition Empress: Appreciate and admire the beautiful things in life Emperor: Avoid fixating on doubts and fears Heirophant: Remembering where you came from can remind you of how far you've come in your life. Lovers: Connecting with other people and learning about them is a truly wonderful thing in life. Chariot: We are all responsible for the life we live. Justice: When uncertain seek more knowledge and insight to help through the ordeal you face. Hermit: At the end of the day (and everything) how you choose to live will dictate your outcome. It is folly to blame others for your own decisions. Fortune: Life is very unfair, but you gotta play with the cards you been dealt with and see how you can make it work for you. Strength: Life can be extremely difficult on you, but one cannot give into despair and sorrow as it will put your life in a standstill. Hanged Man: With bad things in life it can lead to personal growth and new opportunities in your life. Death: Enjoy the life you have as you don't know whether death (In the tarot sense of great change) or your literal death could occur.
I found some fanmade quotes for temperance - aeon. Temperance: Within the clashing of opposites, yet there is the most joyous harmonies. Devil: Sinful humanity is indeed a slave to his own desires. Tower: Everything that rise above you must fall. No matter when the time is. Star: The ability to live on with hope keeps humanity in pain and procession Moon: Fantasies have long existed since human's slumber. Either through dream or nightmare. Sun: The power to pull through countless miseries and rise once more as a radiant. It is enviable. Judgement: At the end of the road the final trial lies ahead. A retribution for your every action. World/Aeon: Dreams and Reality merged as one in the same. As they weave the fate of the WORLD.
One detail I noticed in this fight. Nyx Avatar assumes the properties of the ultimate persona of an Arcana. For example, Magician had Surt. He had fire moves and natural fire absorb.
People say this game is edgy. When it's the complete opposite, when the Avatar of death is telling you to celebrate life and all of it's wonders. Like really?
Am I the only one who simply enjoys this fight BECAUSE of the phrases Nyx spouts at you when it changes Arcana? They're poetic and have symbolic meaning for each Arcana.
Im gonna say this. I hated Yukari after this fight. SHe got charmed by Night Queen and healed the boss to full with Diaharan. Ive never wnated to hurt a party member so much in my entire video game spree. I was level 75 at the time. I had some'okay'Persona's, Namely Gabriel, Uriel, Abaddon, Surt(Who was level 62 and still did most of the work) some random priestess and Michael
Devil: The Arcana is by which all is revealed... The desires of mankind shall be forced down upon others, bringing anguish and wrath among one another.

I love this battle....not just because it is fun to do but the words that Nyx speaks is just divine like and very true if you really sit down to think about them. I could hear Nyx speak divine wisdom all day and NEVER get tired of it.
"the silent voice within one's heart, whispers the most profound wisdom" "Celebrate life's grandeur. . . its brilliance. . . its magnificence. "It is indeed a precious gift to understand the forces that guide oneself" and my absolute favorites "alongside time exists fate, the bearer of cruelty" "Beyond the beaten path lies the absolute end. It matters not who you are. . . Death awaits you" some of the lines are cheesy in a lot of ways, but some of them make a lot of sense to me
the Nyx Avatar is Ryoji, right? WHich was also Pharos? So when Pharos said 'We will always be friends, no matter what.' to the MC..Did he also mean that, even if they had to fight each other in the end? That has bothered me for years.
MC is the means by which Ryoji was contained. Giving Ryoji new views and a whole new appreciation for mankind. Yet he cannot defy Nyx. For her is a part of Nyx. He truly is friends, even as you battle it out.
Anyone else realize that he's required to say "The Arcana is the means which all is revealed" before activating the next Arcana? Even in his last speech before shifting to death, he says it. Plus, the term following the Arcana bit relates to the Arcana he shifts to
I just noticed that, when Nyx's Avatar says "in the face of disaster lies the opportunity for renewal", his voice becomes almost human. Yet another symbology in this fight?
When I first heard this when I played I got goosebumps and now years later nothing has changed it's like the first all over again, I can't wait to buy this on PSN
