I think it's more of a sign that while he's pretty smart, he can still let his guard down if he's not expecting opposition. He IS a teenager after all, so he's not going to be perfect, no matter how talented he is.

The dub does a lot imo. Watched this in Japanese before it got the dub, and didn't have nearly as much attachment since I've played the games with dub as well.

The scene immediately after that is also very sweet, it shows Ryuji, despite all the shit he takes and dishes out with Morgana, he still very deeply cares for him, one of the few things about this anime that did it better than the game, as Ryuji’s comments about him being useless in Mementos were kind of let slide

@@jmurray1110 If you have a Persona before its available, then you're either overleveled or got the Strength Confidant to Rank 10 (since this isn't Royal, where its Rank 5), so he is definitly using the Velvet Room.

​@@jmurray1110i know this might be late, but Ren used Yoshitsune on Shido's Palace, despite one of the persona needed to fuse Yoshitsune (Futsunushi) only available when you max Morgana's Confidant, which is only occured on 23 December (a day before Yaldy's boss fight), so yeah this probably NG+ (or maybe an oversight)

Akechi is actually my favorite, and also borderline insane, but we love him.

Tbf. I think this part of the anime is somewhat decent. It manages to convey emotions of scenes that are just a bit bland in the game. The Haru Arc is really well made in comparison to the game. Also the casino's Boss battle is pretty well made with great emotional beats. Even the pacing got somewhat better. It's definitely a bad anime but the last third manages to get more things right than wrong.
