Do you find the 30lb leader spooks the fish any more than say 20lb? I see salt strong really likes the smaller leader to get shy reds to bite .

I don't notice the difference. If there is one then I'll still accept the tradeoff because the 30 will have a fair shot of landing big snook and the 20 won't. I'm almost always mixing snook in with the reds.

Hey John - I know you're a good guy and concerned about the environment and the fishery but you need to keep and try one snook for dinner. The fish are a little different tasting but when taken from clean water they are very good on the plate. Since I moved down to FL in 2009, I've rationed myself to one dinner snook per year. I feel no guilt, look forward to my meal and they are really excellent eating. I can't compare them to any fish I ate in the old days of living up north but you should give it a shot - at least once. FWC agrees and says it's OK!

Not in Florida, but on LI when beach fishing for large stripers. Sometimes I don't get anything on those bass trips, but those are mostly 90-minute trips at sunrise or sunset.

Hi John, I'm looking to get a new surf rod. I usually fish in the Sound and from the New Jersey Surf. I am looking for a combo in the range of about $200. I currently use a rod/reel that was $80 and 7' long. I want something a little bigger and versatile to cast into the surf for flouder/striped bass. (I also sometimes fish from a kayak so I'm not sure how big I should go, but primarily want to use it for surf fishing) Have any suggestions on what I should look for in terms of size, reel gear ratio, stiffness, etc? Or perhaps you have a video on this?
