It didn’t even hit me that I should rotate objects using different vanishing points. When you said that I just thought “OF COURSE!! The horizon line is what needs to stay the same!” I’m already learning :D

oh my god!!! THIS is what i never understood before in perspective drawing!! you can have multiple vanishing points in the same drawing as long as the horizon line stays the same.... it all makes so much sense now! is like i was almost there but i just thought it was wrong for some reason 😂😂 THANK YOUUU

Wow, THIS is really helpful! And I have not seen this technique for rotation of objects covered anywhere, not in books, not on the Internet. Let’s say you’ve got random books or boxes on a tabletop; previously, I would have struggled to draw it all in perspective, but this makes intuitive sense and it can handle that real-life randomness. And because so many objects can be drawn by starting with a box this opens the way to drawing an infinite number of things. Well done, thanks!

Sometimes it feels like a “third eye” opens up and I can see volumes on paper as I’m drawing them or seeing somebody else draw, but most of the time I can’t see those volumes for the life of me. I’m guessing it’s a matter of practice, as many professionals to do this by hand without any construction lines. They even see the volumes before putting any lines on the paper, or it just seems that way for me. This skill just seems so next-level, that I feel like as a beginner I shouldn’t even touch it yet lol.

It not a big secret you have to understand how to see 3d object as plane first if you want to start getting good at it.It not simple because you have to pick a basic form to encapsulate your form which you will extrapolate from. Basically think of the basic shape could be a box a sphere or a pyramid now think of yourself as being a sculptor that basic shape is now made of solid clay. Now visualize that clay as if was transparent.You can now try to imagine each plane of that basic shape.Let make a example of a simple visualization you can do try to visualize inside your head.Remember the house you would draw as a kid? The basic shape was a cube.Now drop a pyramid on top of it.Now subtract a square window from the side of the cube clay and also a rectangle for the door.Voila you just visualize a simple house.Now what is the hard part is to try to rotate that picture inside your head.Good exercise of visualization include meditation,3d modelling or even better animating and taking a time lapse of an object rotating on itself. The key is to be able to simplify complex object and encapsulate them in the most basic shape possible than add and subtract from that imaginary clay construct.

The thing that confuses me is that in the orthographic no perspective view you rotate the squares around the origin point. The first square is rotated 45 degrees around the origin point that starts at the bottom center of the square. But then the origin moves in the second square, otherwise it would become a rectangle, how did you know how far to move the origin point to always have a perfect square?

hi i would like to know something i tend to get confused when drawing boxes on the same space but with different angles because i tend to think about the lens. how can i know where to place the VP (i Know that they should be placed on the hl) but how far apart should they be placed so that the boxes will look like they were shot with the same lens. i know the techniques you are showing us here are applicable for what am asking for but as i was watching your demo at the end i got confused on how you drew that

Fantastic video! I don't know if you reply to comments, especially on videos that are 2 years old, but here goes. Question: Let's say I'm looking at a box in real life in a view that we would typically draw in one point perspective. As I rotate the box with my hands from there, I get a view that still shows these 3 sides, but I see more of one side and less of the other. Basically, the box is on its way to being something you'd draw in two point perspective, but it's not quite there yet. The method you show seems to depend on the viewer looking straight at the corner of the box, since it acts as a hinge. But if we start with a one point perspective view with the viewer looking straight toward the middle of the box, and rotate from there rather than the corner...well, how do I draw that accurately? Is this an impossible task with linear perspective and must be eyeballed?

I tried this and for some reason one of my boxes became so distorted that the vanishing points were all over the place. Is it because I elongated the square too much to the point where it's distorted and it won't work? This was during the ellipse stage, all the points of division are in place, however the vanishing points were going all over the place. Should I not elongate the square in perspective?
@chienyit5341
@chienyit5341 4 года назад
This might be further elaborated in the next part, but how do you know that the plane you're drawing in perspective is a square so that the rotation can take place smoothly around a circle without distorting? Or does it not matter if it's an ellipsis? I just can't wrap my head around it yet
@jawnie7104
@jawnie7104 4 года назад
The vanishing points have to be 90 degrees from each other always, and to rotate it you put a other set of 90 degree angles on the HL and make sure it’s within the cone of vision so it won’t be distorted. Remember the further you are from the HL the more Objects you see, the closer you are to it there’s gonna be more distortion. Check out Scott Robertson’s book and Joseph d’emilios perspective book! Hopefully this makes sense lmao.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here, but in your final demo - the ammunition crates.. I get that you're using the heights of each crate to determine the future crates' size, however, how do you ensure that the first two edges (perpendicular to each other) are at a 90 degree angle? I'm missing how you ensure that these are boxes and not acute or obtuse angles.

@DanBeardshaw
@DanBeardshaw 4 года назад
It depends on the angle and view you want to create (how you want to see the object you are drawing) there’s no set distance, it’s up to you to decide how you want the drawing to look. I might do a video going over this
@chitamule9040
@chitamule9040 2 года назад
I am replying to a year old comment in case there is someone still wondering if there is a more concrete way to do this. There is a concrete way to do this, you use what's called a station point. You can draw a vertical line perpendicular to the horizon called a *median line*. Where this line intersects the *horizon line* is called the *centre of vision* (C.V in most perspective texts) it is the vanishing point in one point perspective. measuring from the horizon line, you mark of a point on the median line who distance from the horizon line is equal to your *viewing distance* and this is your all important *station point*. From the *station point* you can measure true angles in 'plan view'. What you do is from your station point is you draw two *visual rays* parallel to the sides of your rotated cube and where these visual rays intersect the horizon line will give your left and right vanishing point of your rotated. What the video is showing here is just eyeballing and if you want to understand this properly than don't do this. The station point is also useful for finding the diagonal vanishing point in one point perspective, you use this in drawing cubes in one-point perspective so that the are actually 'square'. If you google the words I have put in bold hopefully you will land on some resources that begin to explain this better.

6:34 - "once I have that on the bottom, and top plane, I can then draw them both with a vertical line (...)". HOW did you find the second point without using any instruments? It seems random to me. Without perspective you used a perpendicular line to find this second point, but in perspective you just seem to be picking 2 points randomly (which I'm sure you are not doing, of course). I don't think it's as simple as creating a perpendicular line from the previous one, as perspective is going to change (I think) this angle. So how did you find this second point? Help pls

You are not rotating anything. you are randomly drawing a box with different vanishing points. For this to make sense, and hence a real rotation, you would need to keep the same vanishing points. And to do this, you need perspective projections. WHat you did does not make sense at all, and it is totally out of control.
